Of Smoke and Wars – Amitav Ghosh

Published

on

Amitav Signing 1

The quaint voice resonated through the glass doors of Vivanta as Amitav Ghosh ceases his book reading of “River of Smoke”. The audience, floating in an Opiate trance, is brought back from the deck of the Anahita, harbored at the port city of Mauritius to the realm of reality and the banquet hall at Vivanta Taj Malabar, in the port city of Cochin.

The reading was part of Amitav Ghosh’s latest book launch and his all India tour conceived by Penguin India. The audience is eager to dive into the second volume in the Ibis trilogy. The prequel, “The Sea of Poppies”, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2008.Global readers has been waiting to know the fate of ‘The Ibis’ after its tempestuous encounter with an inclement whirlwind. In “River of Smoke” Ghosh retraces the journey of ‘The Ibis’ a ship carrying a consignment of convicts and indentured laborers from Calcutta to Canton.

When quizzed about Opium Wars, Ghosh spoke about the quarrels between Britain and China over the sale of opium. Ghosh observes that the entire world was involved in Opium trading at the time. It would not be a stretch to say; “One could even say that the modern world is built on Opium” states Ghosh. The greatest threat that China faced inside the Great wall was that of the Opium. “The regional history of entire 19th century can be summed up as the resistance of China against Opium”

Immense supply of Opium was made available in China by the intentional and calculated British plot in which allegedly Queen Elizabeth was complicit. Ghosh reveals most of the world leaders including Washington, Coolidge and Roosevelt had their families trading Opium. India was no different. Bombay was then known as the Opium City. The Tagore family had their fortunes from Opium trading. “But don’t think for a second that Rabindra Nath Tagore was ever proud of his ancestral trade, in fact he has never ever acknowledged about the roots of his family fortune” chuckles Ghosh.

Much to the delight of the native audience, Ghosh also spoke about his Kerala connection; an integral part in India’s fabric of cultural diversity. “The studies on trading route via Muziris and the Arab influence in the Northern Kerala contributed to my work. My research for the River of Smoke wouldn’t have been possible had it not been the support and assistance of my Malayalee friends.” Ghosh’s long and tedious research for the Ibis trilogy took him to many a place. Once he had to stay in Thallassery for months in a row to get translated a letter written in Arabic in Jewish script. Ghosh also spoke fondly about his life in Trivandrum in 1983 working with the Centre for Developmental Studies. “Sea of Poppies” was a herald. The true story starts with “River of Smoke”. Amitav leaves the audience in the quiet anticipation to wonder about what is yet to come.
The Reading was followed by a book signing which saw his numerous aficionados approaching the author with their hard bound copies, for that very elusive personalized signed copy.

River of Smoke Review

Gosh has established himself as the voice of a world history narrative from the other side. His latest book Rivers of Smoke is the second in the Ibsis Trilogy. The book begins with a raging storm in which three very different vessels have been caught up in. The Ibis, a slave ship of convicts and laborers en route from Calcutta to Mauritius. The Anahita, carrying the biggest ever shipment of raw opium west to Canton; and the Redruth, a Cornish brig with a crew of plant-hunters and cargo of rare flora. The stories of these three ships run first in parallel before intertwining in unexpected and intriguing ways. The first part of this Trilogy, Sea of Poppies, mostly followed the opium trade down the Ganges to Calcutta; in this book Ghosh shifts most of his focus to Canton, the floating city in which the opium market gave rise to British colonialism and brought China into the global geopolitics of the times.

Gosh brings alive the city of Canton its myriad alleys, boisterous harbors and quiet archipelagos. The narration is personalized by Bahram Modi, a Parsi opium merchant out of Bombay, who uses the illegal trade to overcome his wife’s social status and also to follow his lover. Gosh’s narrative gives immediacy to a long lost trailblazing and render it excitement will all it historical implication. The writer uncomplicatedly mixes Canton’s British Chamber of Commerce rhetoric, the Cantonese pidgin, Cornish vowels and an estranged son’s in articulation to chart out the events that led to the Opium War in 1838 with his, now familiar exhaustive research and post colonial empathy.

What is the Vantara Project ?

Published

on

Reliance Industries and the Reliance Foundation introduced the “Vantara” programme (also known as the “Star of the Forest” programme) on February 26, 2024. Its main focus will be on the treatment, care, rescue, and rehabilitation of hurt, abused, threatened, or vulnerable animals in India and beyond. Anant Ambani, a director on the boards of both the Reliance Foundation and RIL, is the creator of the programme.

Vantara (Star of the Forest) was founded on a deep philosophy that blends the accuracy of contemporary science and technology with the ancient Indian attitude of compassion, or “seva.” It is an expression of the moral duty to protect all living things, motivated by deeply ingrained Hindu traditions that maintain that serving animals is equivalent to serving the divine.

Vantara has demonstrated its dedication by organizing the rescue and rehabilitation of more than 200 elephants and numerous other animals from dangerous situations, offering these animals a safe habitat. The initiative extends beyond the act of rescue. It also includes putting key species like crocodiles, leopards, and rhinos through rehabilitation programmes to ensure their survival and well-being.

Vantara’s cutting-edge veterinary hospital, a marvel of contemporary medical technology, is the beating heart of the company’s medical endeavors. With its six specialist surgical centers, endoscopic robotic surgery technologies, and MRI and CT scan machines, the hospital is the best place for animal healthcare. The clinic, which fits damaged animals with prosthesis and helps them recover their health, is at the vanguard of medical innovation.

“The zoological park will be opened to the public soon, allowing people to witness our efforts in wildlife conservation and the sophisticated care we provide,” Anant Ambani said in a statement regarding the hospital’s capabilities and Vantara’s future ambitions.

However, Vantara’s vision goes beyond its confines. Ambani unveiled a bold proposal to transform animal welfare in India. “With training, capacity building, and the improvement of animal care infrastructure, Vantara aims to partner with the Zoo Authority of India and other relevant government organizations to improve the quality of all the 150+ zoos in India,” he said. This project, which emphasizes the value of comprehensive care and animal welfare, is poised to establish a new benchmark for zoos across the country.

In addition to being a haven for wildlife, vantara symbolizes optimism in the struggle against environmental deterioration and our responsibility to protect the planet’s rare biodiversity. Vantara asks us all to participate in a story that celebrates life in all its forms as it gets ready to open to the public.
