Home calling
Wikipedia says: Reverse brain drain , which refers to the migration issue, whereby human capital moves in reverse from a more developed country to a less developed country that is developing rapidly, which is commonly defined as ‘brain drain’. It is also termed as a logical outcome of a calculated strategy, where migrants accumulate savings, also known as remittances, and develop skills overseas that can be used in their home country.
Years ago, the Silicon Valley attracted the best IT talent from India. But the exchange of ideas and innovations after nearly two decades has reversed the trend. The charm of the US is fading off. India’s own Silicon Valley’s are now at the forefront of innovation and they are attracting its super stars back home from the US.
There was a time when nearly 90% of graduates passing out of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) headed to America. But not any more in large numbers. IT industry experts say that there are both personal and professional reasons for the reverse exodus. Most of the returnees say the gap in salaries in the two countries has been steadily decreasing. Money is indeed an important factor but it’s not the main reason for the reverse traffic.
Interestingly the large majority of the returnees are in the middle to senior management categories in the 30-40 age groups. Many of them would like their children to grow up in their own culture. As India asserts its position as a global economic powerhouse it has begun to attract Westerners in almost every field.
And while they make less money in absolute terms at home, most said their salaries brought a “better quality of life” than what they had in the U.S. (There was also some reverse culture shock—complaints about congestion in India, say, and pollution in China.) When it came to social factors, 80% of the Indians cited better “family values” at home. Ability to care for aging parents was also cited, and this may be a hidden visa factor: it’s much harder to bring parents and other family members over to the U.S. than in the past. For the vast majority of returnees, a longing for family and friends was also a crucial element.
Business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan said that the world will witness reverse brain drain, wherein the vast vacancies for CXOs in countries like India will be filled not only by returning Indians, but also by Americans and Europeans seeking better prospects.
The low cost and quality services offered by India’s IT companies have encouraged giant organizations like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo to outsource in India. This has created a large number of jobs in India’s IT sector. Consequently, Indian professionals with work experience in developed countries are in great demand–and many of them are more than happy to fulfill this demand.
In 2010, we saw as many as 60,000 Indian professionals returning to India from the US. As one can imagine, reverse brain drain is important for India, given that it faces a talent crunch in most sectors.
Apart from IT sector, India has seen steady growth in the Healthcare, Pharma and Biotech, Finance, Retail, and Real Estate in the last few years. This economic boom created lot of new jobs in India; a substantial portion of them in the IT segment.
This resulted in the gradual fading of the attraction to America and many of the Indians working in the US are now increasingly eager to be a part of India’s technological revolution.
