The world observes the 25th World Press Freedom Day on May 3.  UNESCO has announced this year’s global theme as,Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”. Media plays a vital role in educating and informing the citizens. The presence of an active and unbiased media makes sure that there is transparency in political dealings. The World Press Freedom Day also aims at improving the standard of journalism worldwide.

Does press enjoy the freedom in India at all? The attack on journalist are at an alarming rate in our country. We stands 138th among 180 countries in this year’s World Press Freedom Index, published by Reporters Without Borders.  Already murder of three journalists have been reported in the past four months.

All three journalist Navin Nishchal, Vijay Singh, and Sandeep Sharma were hit by vehicles. Navin and Vijay were reporters from Dainik Bhaskar. They had an argument with a village leader in Bhojpur, Bihar regarding a news report and this event was followed by the ‘accident’ where their bike was hit by an SUV driven by the village leader.

Sandeep had done a sting operation against the mining mafia in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh. He was hit by a truck in Bhind.

Murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was an incident that shook the entire country. That misshapen sensitized everyone about life threats that people in this field face when they try to bring out the truth to the public.

The Indian constitution nowhere mentions anything regarding the freedom of press. But Article 19 of the constitution that guarantees the freedom of speech and expression to all Indian citizens stands as the foundation for press freedom. Hence reporters enjoy the same status in freedom of speech and expression as that of an Indian citizen. It is also subjected to the reasonable restrictions as per Article 19 in order to protect security, integrity and sovereignty of the country.
