Suneesh Varanadu -Laughing Matters

Published

on

Currently an RJ and producer at Club FM Sunnesh Varanad is a jack of all trades. In search of the perfect medium for expression, he has tried various forms: stand up comedies, journalism,  anchoring and is currently dabbling with scripts for movies.

Comedy is the cruelest of all forms of entertainment; it is someone’s weakness or misery that is being mimicked and made fun at. To be a standup comedian is hard and requires the right mixture of writing, timing and delivery. For Suneesh Varanad, an exceptionally gifted artist, it is just a laughing matter. Suneesh is the RJ and producer of a series of shows in Club FM 94.3, 104.8(Thrissur) famous for its totally different and unconventional themes. Not just one but all of his programmes, Sunday Talkies, Pachakathnam Mahilamani, Ragaramaiyer MBI, Gulumal Bhai, Lokesh Kumar Speaking, Radio Pottas and Garvasis Asan have success stories to talk about. He gives voices to all the characters in his show; from superstars Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi to the drunkard Gulumal Bhai.
Suneesh’s zealous for expression has taken him through many professions. He started off his career as a subeditor at Kerala Kaumudi. Six years down the lane; he knew he needed a change and started the newspaper Jana Sradha, from Cherthala. He had to stop it after 18 issues. It was during this time that we saw him in Asianet in his different roles; as an anchor for Suprabhatham and as a script writer and dubbing artist for another program called Mr. Fun. The transitions in his life did not end there. He tuned himself to fit a different medium, Radio.
Like Suneesh, his shows too are chatty, funny, and filled with variety and excitement.

Movies reloaded in Sunday Talkies

Sunday Talkies was an experimental revolution. Each episode saw Suneesh restructuring a famous movie into a satirical version. The ground breaking episode was Aaram Thampuran as Mobile Thampuran. The comedy version of the movie had Mohanlal’s character, Jagannathan on a mission to build a mobile tower for the Animangalam village. It was an instant success. Director Siddique was bowled over by the show and on his request Suneesh met him with a collection of DVD’s he made of the 36 parody movies also included the versions of other super hit movies like God Father, Commissioner and Pathram as Fool Father, Compounder and Sathram respectively. In its efforts to include new programmes, Club FM

Cooking Life with Paachakarathnam Mahilamani

Mahilamani is a cookery show anchor who mixes the boiling socio political issues as ingredients to prepare delicasies.Inspired by Lekshmi Nair’s cookery show in Kairali T.V, Suneesh gives sound to the female presenter. The freshness of its ingredients made it quite famous. Superstar Kuruma, Subramanya Puri, Bluetooth Thoran, Pinthuna Pollichathu, Alavalathy Avulosunda Kodiyeri Payar are all famous recipes from Mahilamani’s kitchen. It was the start of a trend when Ranjini Haridas was portrayed as mother and Thunchathu Ezhuthachan as father of Malayalam language. After being successfully on air for a year, the show won the RAPA (Radio practitioners association) award.

Musical Investigation by Ragaramaiyer, MBI

Ragaramaiyer from Music Bureau of Investigation is a show hardly 1.25 minutes long. The protagonists Hari and Iyer through their conversations, investigates plagiarism in the film music. A lot of Indian film songs are shameless copies of Latin American, Canadian and Pakistani numbers. Terrorism and rivalry never seems to matter when it comes to copying music from Pakistan. Some Bollywood music directors don’t even bother to change the lyrics too. Malayalam fares better only because of the improvised lyrics; never the music. Iyer finds plagiarism through the blunders of Hari. Hari is a funny character for whom English is a very difficult language. There is a Fans association for Hari in Thrissur. Here are some recent findings by Iyer- Song “ Theri Meri Meri Theri…”in Bodyguard is straight from Pakistan, Olympian Anthony Adam’s “Nila Paithale..” is a copy of an English film song. This show won the Pepper Award by Advertisers agencies association.

Eccentric, yet meaningful critic Gulumal Bhai

Gulumal Bhai, an eccentric character whose varied attempt to break into the music industry as lyricist, singer and music director is met with failure. Heartbroken Gulumal becomes an alcoholic and vents his frustration by criticizing each and every movie song. He speaks about the mismatches in the lyrics and the meaninglessness of the song. Every episode ends with Gulumal Bhai getting slapped. The show is a huge success and is more than 400 episodes old.

The Personality ‘you’

I was known as BOMB in my college which means Bureau of Organized Mature Boys. As the sole member of the organization, I fought against many issues in college. I always wanted to make my friends and people around me to think and laugh. My personality was fine tuned by my life experiences and I really became BOMB.

As a writer:

I acted in mimicries, dramas, skits and even in some movies but I know that writing is the division where I can perform well. I have written scripts for mega shows including Vanitha film awards, Kerala Kaumudi award night and Mathrubhoomi award night. I also wrote ‘Kalanilayam’. Now I am trying to compile my capsule comedies as a book called ‘Pottas’. I struggled a lot in my life, may be the bitter life experiences sharpened the comedian inside me.

Cinema interests:

Cinema is my passion. I studied journalism as I wanted to become a part of the Malayalam movie industry. Scriptwriting is considered an offbeat job but essentially it is the script writer who crafts the basic model of a movie. In the last four years I got many offers but nothing turned out well. I don’t want to do 100’s of movies I only want to be part of 5-6 good movies. I have some offers now, and I am writing a script hoping this time I will enter the industry. When I look back at the exposure I got, I am nowhere but the words of director Siddique motivates me
“I never ever thought that God has reserved this much amount of victory for me so I am saying that the strongest weapon is patience”

THE QUIET FORCE OF A MODERN ICON

Published

on

Behind every poised performance is a quiet, unshakable resolve—a journey of an artist who shows that true strength lies not in loud declarations, but in unwavering integrity and purpose.

There’s something about shoot days that hum with their own energy—where art direction instinct, and moments unfold faster than they can be captured. The FWD Magazine cover shoot with Madonna Sebastian was no exception. From the moment the segment began, it was a visual symphony—natural light, candid motion, curated chaos—all anchored by her easy presence.

By the time the cameras wrapped on the sunlit exteriors, Madonna returned indoors, slipping into a pristine white outfit that seemed to echo her state of mind: calm, clear, and open. The crew took a breather, the lenses cooled, but she remained in rhythm—poised yet unhurried.

It was then, in this in-between window—after the high-energy shoot, before the final touch-ups resumed—that she settled down for an unscripted chat with RJ Asha. No stage, no formal setup—just an airy corner of the space, a couple of chairs, and a warm conversation waiting to happen.

And that’s exactly what did. A moment carved out not for press quotes, but for perspective. For a glimpse into the artist behind the actress. The grounded soul behind the gaze the camera loves

You know Madonna. Or at least, you think you do.

She’s the chirpy Celine from Premam, the graceful Anjali from Kavan, the quiet storm in Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum. But sitting across from her now, you start t0o sense something else. This is a woman  who refuses to be boxed in by the roles she’s played, or the fame she’s earned. She isn’t just riding the wave of stardom—she’s surfing it, steering it, sometimes even swimming against it.

“I’ve never really chased this,” she says, “I just wanted to do good work. Whether it was singing, acting, even being on stage—if it didn’t feel honest, I’d walk away.”

That honesty has become her compass. It’s also what’s made her unpredictable in the best way. In an industry obsessed with hypervisibility and curated glam, Madonna’s detours feel radical. A music video here. A break to focus on home, or a spontaneous trip with friends there. No apologies. No PR spin. Just life. But make no mistake: there’s steel under the softness.

I think people assume that if you’re polite or soft-spoken, you’re passive. That’s not true,” she says, eyes locking in. “I’ve said no more times than I’ve said yes in this industry. Not because I’m arrogant—but because I have clarity.”

That clarity has shaped her choices—from her refreshing screen presence to her deeply personal music. Her band’s indie singles drop like secret letters, far from the formulaic world of playback hits. Her voice, husky and haunting, doesn’t scream for attention. It holds it.

So how does she choose her projects?

Sometimes, it’s a script. Sometimes, it’s a song I’m writing at 2 a.m. under fairy lights. Sometimes it’s a film that pushes me out of my comfort zone, like Leo.”

Ah yes, Leo. The recent mega-hit that reminded audiences just how effortlessly she can hold her ground .

But ask her about the high of being in such a blockbuster, and she smiles without a trace of self-congratulation.

“It was a new space for me,” she admits. “Big canvas, big stakes. But what mattered most was working with people who respected the craft. I’m not into the noise around it. I liked the discipline of it.”

She’s not performing cool—she just is. In a world chasing trends, Madonna moves to her own rhythm.

Even her style says it all: breezy kurtas, vintage florals, bold red lips. Effortless. Unbothered.

When I ask about her five-year plan, she grins.

“I plan for joy. I plan for peace. I plan for purpose.”

That could mean a film—or a forest with no signal. She’s fine either way.

Madonna doesn’t demand attention. She owns it—with quiet power. And she’ll keep showing up, disappearing, and returning—on her terms.

Just like her art.

There’s a kind of presence that doesn’t chase attention—but effortlessly holds it. A quiet confidence that doesn’t need to speak loudly to be heard. In every gesture, every glance, there’s ease. Style, too, follows suit—never trying too hard, yet never fading into the background. A mix of breezy staples, soft silhouettes, vintage moods, and the occasional splash of edge—it all feels lived-in, not styled. Real.

Back inside, lights shift and lenses focus again. Another look, another frame—but nothing feels rehearsed. Just a rhythm she owns, unbothered by the pace around her. Some people leave impressions with spectacle. Others, with silence and substance.

This isn’t about trends or timelines. It’s about being grounded. It’s about rhythm over rush. And it’s a reminder that sometimes, the most magnetic thing in the room is the one not trying to be.
