SIDE EFFECTS OF POTATOES

Published

on

Side effects of potatoes are often neglected or forgotten. Potatoes are widely used all over the world in different forms. They range from smashed healthy potatoes to French fries that are the well-known fast food. They are a versatile root vegetable and a staple food in many households. Potatoes are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals.

However, fried potatoes may also come with some potential negative effects. This includes weight gain, especially when consumed in large amounts. Ultimately, portion size and cooking methods have a major influence on this.

So, let’s explore the top side effects of potatoes.

Side effects of potatoes include weight gain

There is an association between eating certain types of potatoes and potato products and weight gain. However, it’s important to take into account how often you eat them. Also, how much you eat at once and how you prepare them.

Certain processed potato products contain more calories and fat than potatoes that have been boiled, steamed or roasted. These can be French fries, chips, etc. Excess calories can lead to weight gain. This is regardless of the food source. When eaten in moderation and as part of a balanced diet, it’s unlikely that whole, unprocessed potatoes will lead to weight gain.

Side effects of potatoes include hypotension

Eating too much of potatoes can cause hypotension. Hypotension is a condition in which our blood pressure drops down to an abnormally low level, and is characterized by the symptoms like fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, clammy skin, depression, blurry vision, etc. also along the line, a report suggests that eating potatoes 4 times a week could cause high blood pressure.

High glycemic index

Potatoes increase your blood sugar level, particularly peeled potatoes that have a high glycemic index. It may cause diabetic complications to a diabetic patient and can even be the reason for causing type 2 diabetes. Therefore, a person suffering from a high level of blood sugar is advised not to intake potatoes in any form.

Diarrhea

Potatoes and diarrhea have two possible connections. The first is that potatoes may cause diarrhea if you eat lots of them with the skin or you’re allergic or intolerant to them. The second is that potatoes without skin can actually help you get over a bout of diarrhea caused by something else.

Potato allergy or intolerance

If you have diarrhea every time you eat a potato, you may have a potato allergy or an intolerance. Although the two can show similar digestive symptoms, like diarrhea and vomiting, they’re vastly different. A true potato allergy involves the activation of your immune system.

If you experience hives, itchiness, swelling of the tongue, dry cough or lightheadedness along with diarrhea after eating a potato, it’s likely that you’re experiencing a true allergy requiring medical attention.
