Scrunchies Have Made a Comeback into the Fashion Scenario

Fashion has a habit of coming back. Scrunchies have been brought back to the shore after a gap. We’ve all seen the scrunchies trend from Phoebe wearing them on Friends to our own Bollywood stars rocking it in the 90’s.

Scrunchies are once again in the limelight as zoom calls look at no-salon looks and home hair ideas are the trend again. Some say, it’s quarantine hair fatigue and we agree as long as the options are endless, stylish and acceptable.

Silk scrunchies have taken over our timelines, so are fabric ones and a whole lot of Insta-story-friendly organza beauties. Scrunchies were particularly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, including larger, more elaborate versions. Scrunchies regained popularity in the mid 2010s.

The principal advantage of the scrunchie over other methods of hair attachment is that it is softer and less damaging. Since their heyday in the early nineties, scrunchies fell out of fashion for years, cemented by Carrie’s damning anti-scrunchie speech on Sex and the City.

Scrunchies are now called hair clouds, and the change has got to be the most wtf fashion moment of 2018 thus far. Having had a major comeback in 2010 and again in 2015, it’s obvious that scrunchies are the trend that just won’t die.

Each scrunchy is typically made out of velvet, which allows your hair to be worn back without damaging it. Velvet is a soft, lightweight material that allows the tie to slide right over each hair shaft, thus preventing damage.

The pros all agree that jumbo scrunchies will reign supreme in 2021. “With this trend, we’ll see more of oversized accessories — extralarge scrunchies in decadent, lush, or unconventional fabrics,” Rosenkranz said. Polko noted that we’ll see an uptick in long bows and embellished styles, too.

No surprise here, but it all comes down to comfort. “We’re all looking for ways to play up our ‘cozy,’ chic hair looks,” Polko said. Ess added that they’re “easy to pop in, easy to take out for a Zoom call.” What more could you want?

When Anya Taylor-Joy stepped out at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in Jacquemus’ Le Chapeau Bomba, a delightfully oversized raffia hat it was clear that this accessory had become the season’s ultimate statement piece. Interestingly, this was the label’s first foray into hats beyond casual knit and woven styles. ‘We didn’t plan to sell them,’ Altuzarra admits, ‘but they ended up being a hit.

Similarly, milliner Gigi Burris O’Hara has experienced a surge in demand. Although she launched her brand, Gigi Burris, in 2012, she only opened her first store late last year. “During leaner times, when people become more selective with their spending, they seek joy in thoughtful purchases,” she explains.

After years of embracing a more casual style, we’re now gravitating toward all things expressive. Maximalist content creator Sara Camposarcone has been embracing pieces from small brands like Potion23, renowned for its whimsical, witchy hats. “I feel like I can now wear bolder headpieces that complement my extravagant outfits,” Camposarcone shares. “Since discovering vintage fashion, I’ve developed a passion for finding great vintage pillbox hats or a 1920s fascinator.”
