Margherita Pizza, Marie Biscuits, Bloody Mary… Ever wondered who named these food items or how they came to be known by those name? Here are some familiar food items that have been named after women.

Margherita Pizza

The simple tomato based classic pizza with mozzarella cheese and basil leaves is a favourite of many. Apparently, it was named so in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy. The pizza was first made in Italy on the queen’s visit to the Royal Palace of Capodimonte in Naples.

Not to be confused with the pizza, this is a cocktail made of tequila, triple sec, and lemon juice. It is said to be named after the 1940s’ American actress Rita Hayworth, whose actual name was Margarita Cansino. But some people debate on the nomenclature suggesting some other names like Carlos Herrera who made the cocktail for Marjorie King.

Peach Melba and Melba Toast

Both these culinary creations of French chef Auguste Escoffier is named after famous opera soprano of the late Victorian era, Dame Nellie Melba. Peach Melba is a luscious dessert of peaches, raspberry sauce, and vanilla ice cream put together. Both Peach Melba and Melba toast were served by Auguste on two occasions when the singer stayed at Savoy Hotel, London.

Marie biscuits are today manufactured by different biscuit companies around the globe. It is a familiar tea time biscuit to many of us Indians too. But did you know that it was named after the Duchess of Edinburgh Maria Alexandrovna, the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia?

The classic two layered vanilla sponge cake with whipped cream and raspberry jam in between was a favourite of Queen Victoria and hence named after the queen herself. Queen Victoria also has various other food items named after her like the Victoria plum, Victoria apple, Victoria peas, Victoria salad etc.

Not only the much loved Queen Victoria but also Queen Mary I of England who earned the nickname “Bloody Mary” also has a popular cocktail named after her. Bloody Mary is a cocktail made by mixing tomato juice with vodka.

Pavlova is a meringue based dessert with a crisp crust, a light and soft inside, usually topped with fruits. It was made in honour of Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova during one of her world tour visits to New Zealand in 1962. Today, Pavlova is one of New Zealand’s national dishes.

The creation of Tarte Tatin has a funny story behind it. Stephanie Tatin, one of the Tatin sisters who ran Tatin restaurant in France created this dessert accidentally. She was trying to make traditional apple tarts but slightly burnt the apples by cooking it too long in sugar and butter. In an effort the save the dish, Stephanie placed the pastry on top of the apples and popped it into the oven. the outcome was a delicious upside down pastry!

Copper is yet another significant mineral present in crab meat. One significant advantage of copper is that it facilitates the body’s absorption of iron, which enhances the creation of red blood cells. After injuries and illnesses, proper circulation aids in the healing process. 

Consuming excessive amounts of crab can have certain unfavorable impacts, just like with most other foods. If you eat too much of some of the nutrients in crab, such copper and zinc, you could get sick. Crab, however, is a fairly nutritious item to eat in moderation unless you have a seafood allergy, and adverse effects are uncommon. Before consuming any seafood, always make sure you don’t have any allergies.

A Kochi-based malayali is creating a sensation by preparing Kerala Cuisine in the foreign swedish kitchen. Devi Nair, who has been settled in Sweden with her husband for almost 10 years, wanted her daughter to experience the delicacies of the Malyaali culture along with her International palette. The sense of homesickness and nostalgia has a part to play in this venture as well. In recent years, as the pandemic hit she chose to share her cooking extravaganzas on Instagram which led her to become more known to the public. Her recipes featured celebratory treats like the Bengali confection Rosbora, local parotta, and non-vegetarian Kerala foods that are popular on social media because they’re simple to make yet delicious to eat and look at. Devi whips up a storm of authentic Kerala delicacies during Malayali festivals. Tender, plump unniyappam, spongy kozhukkatta, rice dumplings, Vishu ada, and Vishu katta are just a few of the items on her Vishu menu this year. She prepared undaputtu with spicy prawn filling, kilikkoodu with meat and egg white, and ammini kozhukatta, a spicy rice dumpling, for Eid. It is also heard that she is planning to launch her own bakery in Sweden as well.
