Heavy Rain

Published

on

Their stories become your story, and their hardships become obstacles that you feel compelled to overcome with them. No matter how your adventure plays out, Heavy Rain is a profoundly personal experience that should not be missed.

Every once in a while there comes along a book, play, movie or in this case a game that really changes ones’ perspective about the medium. Thanks to the development of technology, crossovers are the order of the day and they in turn try to bring in a profoundly personal experience to the user. Heavy Rain, for the lack of better name can be called a movie noire game. Its plays out like a non linear thriller much in the lines of all time favorite detective movies like Se7en and Zodiac Killer. The game manages to convey the tension, urgency and tragedy each character feels.
The four different seemingly unrelated characters that play out the game are: private investigator Scott Shelby, FBI criminal profiler Norman Jayden, insomniac Madison Paige and the protagonist, Ethan Mars. How far are you prepared to go to save someone you love? This is the central question the game hinges on, after the protagonist son goes missing, presumed the latest victim of the Orgami Killer.

The unconventional controller systems helps to ground your emotional states with that of the character you control. The interaction get difficult depending on whether the character is scared or stressed and the almost uncontrollable shake of the console controller adds an extra dimension in quick action sequences, heart pounding chases, and violent brawls. Even mundane activities like brushing teeth and rocking a baby to sleep become an endearing moment of character -player bonding. Quite often than not, the player is forced to step back and contemplate the consequences of his or her actions. There is no right or wrong way to play the game; some actions get a certain result while other produces a different set of results. .Entire events may not happen due to your choices, some character may die therefore eliminate contributions they may have made to the storyline. No matter how it pans out, the game remains a moving personal experience.

An intensely creepy room filled with webcams streaming live video to nearby TVs is in all possibility the most disturbing scene I have come across in my gaming experience. Never before has a game made me think twice before switching off lights in a rainy Kerala afternoon.

This game is not replayable ,at least not for me. Once you finish your 10 hour crime solving experience, there is no way you would want to go back and figure out small plot changes possible through a different set of actions and choices. Heavy Rain is nonetheless a bold and visionary step forward in the medium of interactive storytelling. Part adventure game and part psychological thriller, Heavy Rain is far from the quick-time-event-powered movie that it may appear to be at first glance. Every action you perform or decision you make–from the simple and mundane to the dark and disturbing–brings you closer to the flawed but realistic characters you manipulate.
