Love-u Love-u, Desi Love-u!

Published

on

From mooing cows to blaring auto rickshaw horns, Indian Kitsch has taken on the market. And no wonder every second a new Kitsch store is springing up in every corner. Chumbak, Masala Chai, Kya Cheez Hai, Kirukk, Horn OK Please, Happily Unmarried, Orange Bicycle…etc are a few of them

The desi shift is this generation’s answer to westernization. Youngisthaanis are growing fond of this desi shift because they can easily relate to these things and most importantly they like the way India is depicted –in a fun, quirky effervescent fashion. Indian fashion is also changing. When designers like Sabyasaachi Mukherjee and Ritu Kumar take Indian fashion to global ramp, desiness is becoming the houte couture. Ed Hardy t-shirts and All Star sneakers are giving way to desi slogan t-shirts and colourful mojris. Nobody sports the all western attire these days, rather they add a payal, a jhola or something desi to pep up their looks. Vogue India’s team blog, Don’t Shoe Me features big, round, colourful bindis as the new trend in International fashion. It’s fascinating in a country where speaking English is considered a status symbol, English has become a passé. Hinglish is the new English now, thanks to the influence of popular channels like MTV & Channel V. There’s even a desi slang dictionary called ‘samosapedia’ available online. But it is Bollywood that played a major role in bringing the desi back. Nothing celebrates indianness like Bollywood movies. Purani Dilli galis, Bombaiyya Hindi, Punjabi kudis, daru addas, dhabhas, patiala suits and what not even things like Sheila ki jawani and munni ki badnaami are celebrated in movies and it’s no secret who are the trendsetters of India.

The popularity of desiness is also fuelled by social networking sites like Facebook. When movies like Big B, Chotta Mumbai and Salt n’ Pepper became the epitomes of mallu coolness, the chief patrons of Facebook, young, open minded hipsters have leapt upon the ‘cool mallu’ bandwagon, putting up trademark dialogues from these as status messages and Face booking in Malayalam, but in their own cooler version. Who would have thought our cool mallu dudes would walk around in Malayalam filmy lines t-shirts? When Avial grooved clad in these, it became a fad in Kerala. When a song that has no particular rhythm or music but just some crazy lyrics is played 24 *7 on all the music channels in country, you go ‘why this Kolaveri?’ But at the same time you can’t help singing along with it, because it’s something that strikes a chord with you, something you can identify with and something your own.

Youngisthaanis are going back to their roots. They are celebrating their belonging through this new found desiness. They are proud of their identity, their culture and nation. Despite all the political dramas, moral policing and the-still-prevalent primitive traditions, they find India incredible. Their new desi identity is another way of expressing nostalgia for objects and experiences that are becoming a thing of the past under the onslaught of global culture. To put in other words, this new identity is rekindling love for all things Indian when young Indians were insecure about living in a third-world nation, asserting a greater confidence in Indian identity. Young Indians are proudly wearing our identifiably Indian characteristics like 1 billion population, corruption, cricket frenzy, funny accents, and arranged marriages on their sleeves. After all when you have it, why not flaunt it?

Unlock the Secrets to Perfectly Curly Hair: The Ultimate Guide for Curly Haired Chicas

Published

on

Let’s be real—perfect hair is a myth, even for Beyoncé. Whether your locks are fine, straight, wavy, or curly, we all face our fair share of mane issues. From disappointing products to battling the frizz monster and dealing with lifeless, limp strands, our hair can sometimes drive us to the brink of insanity. But fear not! We’re here to bring calm and order back into your life with our four-part product guide that addresses all your hair woes. In case you missed it, here’s part two, specially crafted for our curly haired beauties.

What you’re dealing with: Your hair seems to have a personality of its own, constantly acting up, and leaving you with unruly, frizzy tresses. It’s like your head has been engulfed by a wild frizz monster.

What you desire: Well-behaved curls that can withstand any weather conditions (goodbye, breezy days) and exude happiness and bounce. Think Kangana Ranaut’s fabulous curls that seem to defy gravity.

Miracle workers: It’s time to work some magic on those curls! Opt for products that calm and nourish them, enhancing their natural bounce and shape while taming the frizz. Curly hair tends to be dense and dry, as the moisture and nutrients from your scalp often struggle to reach the parched ends through the intricate follicle path. Here’s our advice: choose a mild, moisture-rich shampoo that won’t strip your already-starved strands. Trade your lightweight conditioner for a curl-enhancing masque and embrace leave-in styling products to keep your curls in check. Embrace the curls, minus the chaos.

Stay tuned for the next installments of our hair guide, where we’ll address more hair concerns and provide you with expert solutions to achieve the locks of your dreams.
