Indian’ Traditional Weaves’ takes center stage at Dubai’s Indywood Billionaires Club & Business Excellence Awards 2021
During British rule, India became an exporter of textile materials from being just a supplier. The popularity of Indian textiles slowly started influencing western Fashion, giving rise to new trends globally. Artisans in India have been practicing this craft for centuries to preserve the Khadi tradition.
To promote traditional weaves and provide a Global stage to these extraordinary artisans, Abhini Sohan, Executive Director of Indywood Fashion Premier League, has come with her Khadi and Linen Clothing line. Her magnificent collection was showcased in association with Indywood Billionaires Club Dubai Meet and Indywood Business Excellence Awards 2021. The event was scheduled for 7th October at Dusit Thani Dubai.
During this occasion, Abhini Sohan stated, “Khadi is a hand spun which has a century long history behind it. Though we have entered the era of automation and advanced technology, hand spun garments have a personal touch to it. Even today, artisans in the remote corners of the country still continue to practice this art to keep the weaving tradition alive. Thus, it becomes our responsibility that we give them the stage they deserve. This show is just a beginning towards that goal.”
Niya Roy was the show stopper of the segment. She is a sound healer, Hypnotherapist, and Yoga Instructor at the illuminations well-being center. With an inborn talent to immediately connect with people, her passion for psychology, fitness, and well-being ignited her love for the world of therapeutic modalities. She is also the Chief Happiness Officer at Aries Group and Director of Indywood Fashion Premier League.
Abhini showcased her design collections for the first time during the grand event of Indywood Fashion Premier League Season 3 at Taj Connemara in Chennai last year. Recognizing the relevance of the age-old weaving tradition of India and the significant role it played in shaping the fashion world for ages, the show was themed “A walk for a cause.” The collections are aimed at promoting the weaver community in India.

The Year of Statement Hat
When Anya Taylor-Joy stepped out at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in Jacquemus’ Le Chapeau Bomba, a delightfully oversized raffia hat it was clear that this accessory had become the season’s ultimate statement piece. The fall 2024 runways echoed this sentiment, with Chanel and Prada showcasing hats as the new must-have. Think of Sarah Jessica Parker’s oversized Maryam Keyhani creation, worn on the set of And Just Like That… earlier this year, or Margaret Qualley donning Chanel’s nautical style at Cannes. These hats are for the main characters who command attention, making a bold statement long before you arrive.
Altuzarra’s fall 2024 collection featured boxy headpieces on some models, each designed to evoke a specific character. “It was about finding joy in wearing a complete look, fully embodying a character,” explains designer Joseph Altuzarra. Interestingly, this was the label’s first foray into hats beyond casual knit and woven styles. ‘We didn’t plan to sell them,’ Altuzarra admits, ‘but they ended up being a hit.
Similarly, milliner Gigi Burris O’Hara has experienced a surge in demand. Although she launched her brand, Gigi Burris, in 2012, she only opened her first store late last year. “During leaner times, when people become more selective with their spending, they seek joy in thoughtful purchases,” she explains.
After years of embracing a more casual style, we’re now gravitating toward all things expressive. Maximalist content creator Sara Camposarcone has been embracing pieces from small brands like Potion23, renowned for its whimsical, witchy hats. “I feel like I can now wear bolder headpieces that complement my extravagant outfits,” Camposarcone shares. “Since discovering vintage fashion, I’ve developed a passion for finding great vintage pillbox hats or a 1920s fascinator.”
