Aju, Lena & Ranjita speaks about ‘Saajan Bakery Since 1962’

Malayalam cinema is gradually getting back on track after a long break. Theatres are reopened and after solving all the issues with the industries and associations, Malayalam movies are finally releasing on theatres.

The much awaited ‘Saajan Bakery Since 1962, an Arun Chandu directorial, starring Aju Varghese, Lena, Renjitha and Ganesh Kumar was released this week and viewers have welcomed the movie whole heartedly.

“It’s such a great feeling, in fact I was there for the first show at Shenoys in Kochi and it was such a lovely feeling to step into a theater again. Nothing can replace the theater experience and I think it’s great that we’re opening up again and everyone is responding well” says Lena.

Aju Varghese who is completing 10 years in the industry, who we are all familiar with his comedy and character roles can be seen in the title role of Bobbin in Saajan Bakery. Lena plays his sister Betsy and Siblings Bobbin and Betsy run their family business, Saajan Bakery, together.

“The support of all the directors, screen writers, co actors, producers and most importantly the audience are the reason behind my career. It’s relief and gives a feel of content to release after a year like 2020 and as a company Funtastic Films was very happy and proud to release a film in theatres and it’s definitely the time to give support to the theatres” he says.

“I was called in by Aju, asking me whether I would like to play his elder sister in a movie based on siblings and I just loved the idea of the movie as he told me the story and it was very easy to say yes” Lena says.

“Ups and down in career is mostly calculated by success and failures, but I’ve had more positives in my journey, because even if a movie is a success or a failure, every set have offered me a fair space of learning and that’s what is important in our journey forward. Work is of utmost importance, just focus on what you do and do it whole heartedly and don’t bother about the results” he adds.

“Betsy is someone who is very grounded and a very stable person who actually goes through lots of frustrations in life when the movie begins and through the movie, she resolves a lot of her life problems and resolves the issues of the characters surrounding her” Lena adds about her character.

Watching a sibling rivalry movie can both be entertaining and stressful. But when done well, what it does best is make the viewers feel it’s a relatable story as most people would have lived through such spats at some point or the other. Saajan Bakery is set in the world of two sparring siblings, and their worlds, explosive moments and brewing tensions can’t be too alien to anyone with brothers or sisters.

“I really enjoyed acting with Aju so much because he is always like a live wire, he is so funny and we had all these clashes between us in the movie as characters and we were really enjoying the sibling rivalry.

Aju Varghese has handled multiple roles on and off screen for Saajan Bakery. He wields the cap of screen writer, producer and the title roles of both father and son, Saajan and Bobbin. “Handling the lead role is just once in a while and I’m not planning to continue screenwriting and even at production we have Dhyan and Vishakh and it’s a team effort” Aju says.

The title of the “Saajan Bakery Since 1962” was chosen to give an organic feel, because its too personal to the subject, story and circumstances of the characters in the movie.

‘Once upon a time in Ranni’, the first song released with its peppy lyrics gives us a glimpse into the world of Saajan Bakery and the lives of Bobban, Betsy and their Ammachan played by Ganesh Kumar. Ranjita Menon plays Merin.

“The shooting experience was lovely. We finished the film in 30 days, in Ranni and it was lovely to shoot there as it gives a feel of olden days of Kerala. It was such a loving cast and crew we were like a family and we had lots of fun as we were also shooting in a bakery” says Lena.

Lena was the first and only single choice to play the role of Betsy. Also, the mission and vision of the Funtastic Films is to include new talents as part of the cast and crew.

Ranjita Menon as a new face had a wonderful experience with the cast and crew. “I’m really blessed to start a career with such a nice team. All of them were really accommodating and helpful. I’ve previously done a few ads and a small role in a movie but this is actually my proper first movie playing an important character. Definitely this experience counts a lot” she says.

Ranjita plays Merin, who is a typical Ranni girl. She is a peculiar character and a bit quirky and to know what happens when she enters into Bobin’s and Betsy’s life you must watch the movie.

“As a starter, it was great to work with such experienced actors like Lena, Aju and Ganesh Kumar. I had more combination scenes with Aju. It was such a great learning experience for me and they were all really friendly and we had good talks. I feel happy to be a part of it” Ranjita adds. Pathrosinte Padappukal is Ranjita’s next project.

The Film was written by Arun Chandu, Sachin R Chandran and Aju Varghese. The film was initially scheduled on 21 February 2020 it was postponed. The film premiered on 12 February 2021.

Songs were released on September 2020 and all the songs are labled by Music247. All music is composed by Prashant Pillai.

All of them are excited as the movie finally released on theatres. In a nutshell Saajan Bakery Since 1962 revolves around a family-owned bakery that faces sibling rivalry between the two children of the Bakery`s founder Saajan. Watch it on theatres to see if the chemistry between the siblings have worked out.
