A Dance Affair with professional dancers
Eight professional dancers speak about the contemporary scenario when it comes to dance and its forms
Words: Rheanna Mathews Images: Various Sources
There is a lot more awareness when it comes to dance and its different forms and styles in today’s world, thanks to contemporary phenomena like reality TV shows, YouTube videos and the like. FWD Life caught up with a number of artists to pick their brains about this and the tendency of new forms to arise from a fusion of styles practiced by a dancer. These professionals were in Kochi for The Floor’s annual recital, the Dance A’Fair.

“I do a lot of styles so I definitely wouldn’t call myself a Hip-hop dancer, or a Latin dancer; I call myself a dancer, because I fuse everything together. When I do Hip-hop, you might see a Latin flavour in that, and when I do Latin, you might sense something else in it too. I always love to fuse styles, because really, it’s the music that tells you what to do.”
Megha Khatri
“I first saw the Latin form of dancing through a reality TV show. While these shows cater to the audience and focus on show moves and power moves that sacrifice the authenticity of the form, it cannot be denied that they create a lot more awareness regarding dance. More and more people are taking up dance, and consequently there are more people teaching it. It is no longer unheard of to take up dancing as a profession.”
Shreenath Muthyala
“When you work on a performing art form, it is important to have awareness and at the same time train under someone so that you understand the totality of it. We all wade through misleading information every day, through social media, the news, people, and it’s easy to be misled. Awareness is great, provided it is in the right path.”
“It’s exciting to see people branch out into different genres of dance. But it’s important to work on a fusion project…without confusion. When you fuse two elements, it’s important to have a good command over both. But, we’re all prone to fusing things. It’s human tendency to like mixing things up.”
Dil Sagar
“The downside of this great increase in awareness is that sometimes, people don’t get the proper training they need. They look at YouTube videos and kind of copy that and don’t really get the rhythm of things right. When it comes to fusion though, at least in my case, I always try to develop myself, get a new vocabulary of movement,”

“There are two kinds of dancers: those that take up one dance form and perfect that, and those who like to experiment with different forms of dance. It’s always up to the individual what they want to become and how they want to practise their dance.”
Jyothi Vijaykumar
“In Kochi, people are leaning towards newer forms and styles of dancing, but there aren’t enough opportunities. I was first introduced to the classical forms of dancing here and it was only in Mumbai that I came into contact with Belly dancing and Bangalore that I received my training. Kochi’s just catching up.”
Govind Krishna
“When you look at it, Hip-hop wasn’t this big at first but it’s become a proper dance form today. Fusion definitely happens with contemporary dance forms and is part of its evolution. Dance is all about evolution.”
Arunima Gupta
“We created Dance A’Fair at our school with the hope of bringing artists from across India down to Kochi. It gives our students the opportunity to work with different artists and more importantly grants them a level of exposure that isn’t available otherwise.”
