Just a sneeze at home can make the entire family point their fingers at you for having ice cold water from the refrigerator. Yes, the water you drink can play a major role in maintaining sound health.  At home tap water is always treated something which is highly unsafe because of the indigestion related uneasiness that it can bring and the high amount of impurities that can be found in, commonly called as pacha vellam (raw water) in Kerala. As the monsoon approaches my mother extends her hand to take a spoonful of cumin and that is sprinkled into water and boiled till the water attains a golden yellow colour. This water attains a faint flavor of cumin and is called jeeraka vellam (Cumin Water). It is a quick fix for sore throat and cold. My mother would always fill a bottle full of this and keep it next to me. Sipping on this concoction always helps.

Next is the slightly pinkish brown chukku vellam commonly served hot along with meals. Chukku or dry ginger is an ingredient that holds a lot of importance in Ayurveda. Ginger has the ability to act as a catalyst to the process of digestion and is carminative in nature.  Now we know why chukku vellam is commonly served along with scrumptious feasts.

Another popular drink is Karingali vellam. Karingali is also known as Dahasamani (thirst quencher), it is a powder obtained by crushing the bark of Cutch tree. Along with purifying the water, there are many benefits to this concoction as well. It can cure indigestion, improve digestion and even improve your appetite.

Pathimukham (Sappanwood) is yet another tree bark powder generally sprinkled over boiling water to attain a warm pink colour. This ingredient purifies the water and prevents spread water-borne diseases. Regular use of this water is beneficial even for your skin.

That’s not all, there are more water blends to help you with certain ailments like mixing fenugreek for menstrual cramps and coriander water to ease bloating and soothing allergies. The main reasons why drinking water is served hot is to reduce the level of impurities and improve digestion. And the best part is that all the above-mentioned water mixes have a mild flavor to it and gives the plain water a fancy make-over.

If there is any other natural recipe or wonder herb that you use or has been prescribed by your grandmother or mother to keep you in the pink of your health, do share with us  in the comment section below.

Compared to other meats, crab offers a substantially higher supply of selenium.
