Here are some confused fashion statements that famous fashion retailers have got the public musing over the fact of logic over innovation

Bizarre or high fashion? the debate continues. The clueless fashion statements that high-end brands are trying to achieve through their out of the box fashion endeavours have left the public to ponder between the usability and sensibility of fashion. Some of the best fashion success stories have come out of explorative silhouettes and wild amalgamations. But the question of relevance and innovation has barred the acceptance of some major brands’ merchandise in the market. Here are three such fashion trials that created a huge social media buzz.

 Balenciaga’s T-Shirt Shirt

The T-shirt shirt from the men’s autumn collection of 2018, that luxury brand Balenciaga launched, turned out to be a major disbelief as it was a normal shirt attached to a plain T-shirt. The social media hustle that followed its launch was uncontrollable, as it was priced at US$1290 (Rs 87030). Another reason for the outbreak was that the brand had itself given the message of how it could be worn in two different ways, the T-shirt in, leaving the shirt hanging in front, or the shirt in, leaving the T-shirt hanging at the back. The public, flustered by the obnoxious rate of this garment, took the call to question the logic behind this confusing garment. Balenciaga’s designer Demna Gvasalia, however, kept up the statement and refused to give away to the endless memes that floated around twitter.

Zara’s Lungi Skirt

The lungi skirt launched by fashion retailer, Zara, left the South Asians to look at the description twice before confirming their doubts. It was indeed the refurbished fashionable version of the traditional lungi, the comfort attire of South Asian, Southeast Asian and Arab men. The social media, however, took this launch as an opportunity to bring out images of South Indian men wearing it with pride taking a chance to get back at the brand. The brand describes it as a flared skirt, with draped details ready to sell it at a rate of US$90 (Rs 6072). Never giving a chance to ignore the question of sense, social media took up the responsibility to attack Zara with the flow of extreme responses and memes. However, this draped checkered skirt is still prevalent in the market.

Moschino’s Dry Cleaning Bag Dress

The creative director of Moschino Jeremy Scott, famous for his explorative take on fashion, took a call to get a cleaning dress on the ramp of Milan Fashion Week. This was not a statement to get startled at as the brand has previously given room for card boxes when top models Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner walked down the ramp in ravishing transformations of cardboard boxes into dresses, headgears and boots. The dress reads ‘We love our customers’ and ‘Moschino’s Cleaners’. Needless to say, this too invited an internet havoc following its price revelation of US$700 (Rs 47087).

Needless to say, fashion warriors would continue to come up with extravagant and ravishing outbursts that may or may not become the topic of discussion, depending upon the sensibility that it would put forward. Fingers crossed the world awaits what and when the next bizarre fashion launch would be.

When Anya Taylor-Joy stepped out at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in Jacquemus’ Le Chapeau Bomba, a delightfully oversized raffia hat it was clear that this accessory had become the season’s ultimate statement piece. The fall 2024 runways echoed this sentiment, with Chanel and Prada showcasing hats as the new must-have. Think of Sarah Jessica Parker’s oversized Maryam Keyhani creation, worn on the set of And Just Like That… earlier this year, or Margaret Qualley donning Chanel’s nautical style at Cannes. These hats are for the main characters who command attention, making a bold statement long before you arrive.

Altuzarra’s fall 2024 collection featured boxy headpieces on some models, each designed to evoke a specific character. “It was about finding joy in wearing a complete look, fully embodying a character,” explains designer Joseph Altuzarra. Interestingly, this was the label’s first foray into hats beyond casual knit and woven styles. ‘We didn’t plan to sell them,’ Altuzarra admits, ‘but they ended up being a hit.

Similarly, milliner Gigi Burris O’Hara has experienced a surge in demand. Although she launched her brand, Gigi Burris, in 2012, she only opened her first store late last year. “During leaner times, when people become more selective with their spending, they seek joy in thoughtful purchases,” she explains.

After years of embracing a more casual style, we’re now gravitating toward all things expressive. Maximalist content creator Sara Camposarcone has been embracing pieces from small brands like Potion23, renowned for its whimsical, witchy hats. “I feel like I can now wear bolder headpieces that complement my extravagant outfits,” Camposarcone shares. “Since discovering vintage fashion, I’ve developed a passion for finding great vintage pillbox hats or a 1920s fascinator.”

As Anant Ambani’s pre-wedding festivities come to an end, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja chose to dress in Ladakh traditional garb. The event featured a number of topics, with India’s rich past being the focus yesterday night. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja emphasized this by dressing in Namza Couture, which was established in 2016 by Padma Yangchan and Jigmet Disket and is renowned for its commitment to Ladakhi fabrics.

 The Mogos, a gown-like item with a shimmering zari border and pistachio green brocade, was part of Sonam’s ensemble. She wore a rani-pink shawl called a “Bok,” which is usually made from silk or goat skin and is worn to keep warm by the locals.
