Sergeant Stubby
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”
It all began when Private Robert J. Conroy saved a pit bull puppy and named him Stubby, in 1917. He soon learned the behavior of soldiers and even started saluting in his own modified way. Soon he became the mascot of 102nd Infantry, 26th Yankee Division. When the division shipped out for France Conroy smuggled Stubby aboard. Stubby’s salutes almost always won over the superiors and on reaching France he was even allowed to be on the front lines. He was injured many times in the battle but it only made him all the more powerful. His high sensitiveness to detect gas saved the entire division from an early morning gas attack. Stubby also had a talent for locating wounded men; he would bark until help arrived or lead the lost soldiers back to safety. He even caught a German soldier. As the German ran, Stubby bit him on the legs, causing the soldier to trip and fall. He continued to attack the man until the US soldiers arrived. For capturing an enemy spy, Stubby was put in for a promotion to the rank of Sergeant thus becoming the first dog to be given rank in the United States Armed Forces. Later, Stubby was seriously injured during a grenade attack and was rushed to the hospital. When he became well enough to move around at the hospital, he visited wounded soldiers, boosting their morale. By the end of the war, Stubby had served in 17 battles. He led the American troops in a pass and review parade and later visited with President Woodrow Wilson. He visited the White House twice and met Presidents Harding and Coolidge. Stubby was awarded many medals for his heroism, including a medal from the Humane Society. When his master, J. Robert Conroy, moved to Georgetown University, Stubby became the mascot of the Georgetown Hoyas. He died in 1926.
Ask Clover
Dear Clover, I recently bought a pup. Can I use human shampoo to give it a bath?
Pups can be bathed when they are two month’s old. Hope your pup is atleast 2 months old. Whatever be the quality never use human shampoos or soaps for dogs. The skin pH of dogs and humans differ very much. Get a good dog shampoo or soap for the pup. Give him bath in clean water. Wrap him in a clean towel and rub him dry. You may dry your dog with a drier in low setting. In our tropical climate, it is best to bath him once a week in summer and once in two weeks in winter. I’m sure as a responsible pet owner, you have taken the pup to the veterinarian.
Clover, the Mare is working as an assistant to Dr. Surej at Cochin Pet Hospital. Like the good doctor, Clover also believes in providing the finest services to all in the animal kingdom. Clover loves to talk and usually addresses herself with her name. Clover will answer to your queries at [email protected]
What are the things to be considered when you buy a dog?
Now, that is a good question to ask. Dog’s are good creatures, you know. If you are planning to buy a pup, make sure you have discussed and got approval from everyone in the family. Oh, ya. It is very important. Dogs are these lovey dovey creatures and they the love and care of everyone in the family. Oh, and choose breed that suites you. Now get pups that are 6-8 weeks old. Don’t forget to collect the vaccination history of the dog from the seller.
You were walking through the road side when you heard a faint little cry. You understand it comes from the trash on the sides. You go near to see what it is. It is a small puppy inside a cardboard box. You are angry and swear on the The puppy’s teeny weeny eyes caught your attention. You want to walk away. But you can’t resist the cute little eyes of the pup. You finally bring the pup home.
Sounds familiar? It is very humane of you to rescue a pup or a kitten. But do take it to the Veterinarian to examine it thoroughly. You cannot predict what disease causing germs the dog might be carrying. The veterinarian will deworm the pup. If it is atleast xx months
“Atul, I’m leaving to the United States for an urgent knee replacement surgery. Please take care of my farm and all the animals. Lola” That was what the entire message said. Animals. What is he gonna do? Atul wondered as he stood in front of the gates to the property of his friend Lola. He was raised in the city and has never even touched an animal. He shrieks when he sees a cockroach or spider. He politely takes the other side of the road when he sees a dog coming by.
How is HE going to manage a whole farm?
He has never been to the farm before but from what he remembers of the stories his other friends have told him he knew his IIT – IIM education is not going to help him in this venture for sure. Atul kept on staring at the gates hesitant to go in; just breathing in the cool air and considering his decision one last time. Should he go back? He has packed stuff to last for a month but he could go back even now. The city is not far away and he was sure to find at least an old acquaintance there. As he kept staring at the gates a small brown pup came running from somewhere and went in pushing the gate half open. Atul felt like he could not go back now. The gates are opened and he has to go in. So he followed the pup and went in.
Inside it was mayhem. A big brown horse was taking out the straws from the haystack. A small dog was tearing apart a bamboo basket on which was marked Echo. The pup Atul followed was nowhere to be seen. On one corner was a white cat with spots hissing at a big brown cat perched on top of the compound wall. Atul had no clue on what to do.
He looked at the cats. The spotted cat kept on hissing and wiggling its tail. Both of them were looking at each other intensely. The spotted cat took one step as if in slow motion. It made a cry that reminded Atul of a baby. Dup! Spotted Cat pounced onto the big brown cat. The big brown cat jumped off the wall and made a run for its life. Spotted Cat followed it, now making an even more sharp sound.
All this commotion made the dog stop chewing the basket and it (he or she? Only God knows) looked up and saw Atul. Before he could even understand what was happening, the dog sprang to Atul and almost pushed him down. Atul tried to defend himself with the bags he was holding. Although the dog was small, it was very strong and in its next effort, the dog did throw Atul onto the ground and started sniffing him. Atul wanted to cry on the top of his voice, but he was unable to make any sound. He just laid there holding his breath. The dog was on top of him now. Then he heard someone shouting and the dog left him and ran to the side of the house from where the sound was coming. Atul tried to get up and he saw an old man coming to his help running from where he heard the sound.
“Sir I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you come in.” He kept on saying sorry as he helped Atul get up and find his bags. Atul didn’t hear half the things he was saying. His only thought was to escape from there. “Why did I leave my corporate job? Why did I even agree to come here? (That wasn’t actually true as no one asked him in the first place. He was just summoned by Lola with her letter) Why did I come here?”
The old man then turned to the dog and started scolding him, “Appu why did you scare sir”. As if he is going to understand, thought Atul. To Atul’s surprise, it seemed as though the dog did understand and was it even a bit apologetic? The dog stretched its front legs and lowered its head. “Okay , Appu. Enough. Now go away. Go” Hearing the man say this, the dog turned around and ran to the other side.
