The audience has already started to call him the Naadan (Kerala’s) Tarantino. In fact, it is somewhat true. Lijo Jose Pellissery can be Mollywood’s unforeseeable filmmaker with such an independent, direct, and unpolished style of filmmaking

Quentin Tarantino is like a revolution who inspires a lot of filmmakers around the world. His nonlinear storylines, black comic satires, grasping exceptional performances from lesser-known artists, all made him a widely renowned and acclaimed filmmaker by both audiences and critics. In India, it was Anurag Kashyap who was regarded as the filmmaker who could be compared to Tarantino. But these days a prominent discussion is rising that Mollywood owns a filmmaker like the great Tarantino, and that is Lijo Jose Pellissery.

If someone asks what makes all these three directors connect, it will be their perspective towards cinema. They all believe cinema is not just a medium to make viewers pass their two hours. According to these directors, there are no artists. Characters should resemble the life of viewers and it should be raw. From narrating stories which no one had ever touched to shooting on real locations employing guerrilla-filmmaking techniques with hidden cameras, these three, Tarantino, Kashyap and Pellissery are a change which will be marked in history forever.

After Pulp Fiction, which is an ironic combination of humour and strong violence, Tarantino’s filmmaking concepts were widely accepted. Anurag Kashyap always had realistic scenarios in his flicks, otherwise, films would be light and frothy, like candy floss, according to him. For Lijo, even though he had made two movies earlier, it all begun with Amen, a romantic comedy musical satire which received positive reviews from both viewers and critics. In Amen, Malayali audiences realised characters such as common folks and a realistic plot can turn out to be a great film. With this film, Lijo earned the trust of people who spare a couple of hours in front of a screen and won people’s heart.

All the three directors; Tarantino, Kashyap and Pellissery, are not the kind of director’s who stick onto safe story plot, they are known for their approach to take risks. Genres like Black satires and dark thrillers were handled by all these three with complete ease. They are the proof that a big star cast is not the necessary element for the success of a film. Tarantino presented the world mesmerizing performances of Tim Roth, Randy Brooks, Kirk Baltz and so on while Surveen Chawala, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pavan Malhotra made viewers struck with their acting skills through Kashyap’s films.  When it comes to the casting style of Lijo, he has presented Malayalam film industry over 90  new faces through his movie Angamali Diaries and some offbeat performances from Fahad Fasil, Indrajith, Chemban Vinod, Vinayakan etc. These filmmakers have the knowledge how to use the actors wisely, cause they work from the root level and focus on extreme detailing. The point of catch, could be; they are all not just filmmakers, they are script writers too. They not just make the others act skillfuly, but they themselves are good actors. Sapthamashree Thaskaraha is the first movie Lijo has acted and he has definitely proved that he is a natural actor.  Who can disagree with the fact that he is Kerala’s Tarantino?

Lijo Jose Pellissery continues to make a mark in the industry with his unconventional and brave films. His recent release Ee Ma Yau is an astonishing satire on death and the inevitable truth that surrounds it.
