Bombay Jayashree – a name that is the most sort after. She’s now an artist who has shone as a classical artist. She has certainly created a niche for herself with her commitment and dedication to music. FWD gets in a conversation with her to know more about classical music in India.

When did you discover music?

My parents were music teachers who taught classical music in Mumbai where I grew up. My grandparents and my whole family are passionate about music. I come from a family where musicians were invited home and we had small concerts. I think I imbibed so much from them as a child. So quite naturally, my choice was to be a singer.

In which field were you trained, Carnatic or Hindustani?

My training in classical music was Carnatic. But, my mother used to make me listen to different types of music, she appreciated music in all ways. From Hindustani to songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammed Rafi to ghazals by Mehdi Hassan, she made it a point that I learned everything.

What is the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic classical in terms of layaa and bhaava?

There are so many differences, but both stem from the same seven notes. Both started as temple music, but they took a different journey. Hindustani music took a completely different route during the Mughal period and then it was performed at the courts. But In South India, Carnatic music remains in the temple.Layaa and bhaava are important for both Hindustani and Carnatic classical. The way they are approached, presented, internalised, executed and taught is completely different. There was the pre-Sabha era, where there was only the elite in the courts or temples.

Have Sangeetha Sabhas given the public more power to judge musicians?

Judge is a very strong word. Performing in a Sangeetha Sabha is a different experience altogether.I wouldn’t say the power has changed. I would only say it has widened the reach and has made music more accessible.

When it comes to light music or movie soundtracks, are there compromises?

There are no compromises but yes there are improvisations. Everything is a learning experience.

Has the reach widened with songs like Vaseegara?Revised-FWD-June-Issue-Magazine-Final-39

Definitely. Cinema is a mass medium.

Is the Thaniyavarthanam done on the basis of a personal mood or the general ambiance?

I think it is both. More than my mood, it is the reflection of the composition that I have sung which leads to the thaniyaavarthanam. It includes the permutations and combinations of the Mridangam artist. Of course, I am sure that artists who play the Mridangam will play differently at different places. It is according to the place they are playing at and the how they can play there.

Is it the same with Raagalaapam too?

Absolutely. The Raagalaapam should reflect the composition. The Raagalapam should give a hint about the composition; whether it is a brisk one, robust one, or a sober one. Every raga is an emotion in itself. It is so natural for us to get enchanted by the beauty of the raga while singing that, the beauty and the aesthetics are always a part of it.There might be people who might not be able to catch the hint. Is it because of the lack of knowledge about the composition or because of the language barrier; language in terms of technical music knowledge? A person who listens to Carnatic classical might not be able to catch the hint of a raga based in a Hindustani classical. It is possible that someone who has not heard the composition or doesn’t have training might not be able to understand Mohana raga. But I am sure, a layman can understand the emotion and the magic that the ragaalaapam has.

Even though there were composers like VidushiVasanthaMadhava or Prof. R.N.Sreelatha, who have contributed immensely in the field of classical music. What’s your opinion on female composers’ involvement in classical music?

The male-female ratio is there in many fields, these days. What I feel is that great male composers like Thyagaraja Swami and MahakaviBharathiyar have brought a feminine quality and charm in the composition. They have been able to understand the love between a mother and a child. Sita’s love and respect for Rama. It is probably because of the quality of the composition that I look into, that I haven’t thought about the female-male ratio as such.

Till now your most memorable concert is?

(She chuckles) There have been many memorable ones. But the most memorable one was in 1990 when my Guru was sitting in the first row. After the concert, my Guru was invited to speak about the concert. I remember going completely blank when the curtain opened. Today when I think of it, how many people get this blessing of having a great Guru sitting in the first row and listening to your concert?

THE QUIET FORCE OF A MODERN ICON

Published

on

Behind every poised performance is a quiet, unshakable resolve—a journey of an artist who shows that true strength lies not in loud declarations, but in unwavering integrity and purpose.

There’s something about shoot days that hum with their own energy—where art direction instinct, and moments unfold faster than they can be captured. The FWD Magazine cover shoot with Madonna Sebastian was no exception. From the moment the segment began, it was a visual symphony—natural light, candid motion, curated chaos—all anchored by her easy presence.

By the time the cameras wrapped on the sunlit exteriors, Madonna returned indoors, slipping into a pristine white outfit that seemed to echo her state of mind: calm, clear, and open. The crew took a breather, the lenses cooled, but she remained in rhythm—poised yet unhurried.

It was then, in this in-between window—after the high-energy shoot, before the final touch-ups resumed—that she settled down for an unscripted chat with RJ Asha. No stage, no formal setup—just an airy corner of the space, a couple of chairs, and a warm conversation waiting to happen.

And that’s exactly what did. A moment carved out not for press quotes, but for perspective. For a glimpse into the artist behind the actress. The grounded soul behind the gaze the camera loves

You know Madonna. Or at least, you think you do.

She’s the chirpy Celine from Premam, the graceful Anjali from Kavan, the quiet storm in Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum. But sitting across from her now, you start t0o sense something else. This is a woman  who refuses to be boxed in by the roles she’s played, or the fame she’s earned. She isn’t just riding the wave of stardom—she’s surfing it, steering it, sometimes even swimming against it.

“I’ve never really chased this,” she says, “I just wanted to do good work. Whether it was singing, acting, even being on stage—if it didn’t feel honest, I’d walk away.”

That honesty has become her compass. It’s also what’s made her unpredictable in the best way. In an industry obsessed with hypervisibility and curated glam, Madonna’s detours feel radical. A music video here. A break to focus on home, or a spontaneous trip with friends there. No apologies. No PR spin. Just life. But make no mistake: there’s steel under the softness.

I think people assume that if you’re polite or soft-spoken, you’re passive. That’s not true,” she says, eyes locking in. “I’ve said no more times than I’ve said yes in this industry. Not because I’m arrogant—but because I have clarity.”

That clarity has shaped her choices—from her refreshing screen presence to her deeply personal music. Her band’s indie singles drop like secret letters, far from the formulaic world of playback hits. Her voice, husky and haunting, doesn’t scream for attention. It holds it.

So how does she choose her projects?

Sometimes, it’s a script. Sometimes, it’s a song I’m writing at 2 a.m. under fairy lights. Sometimes it’s a film that pushes me out of my comfort zone, like Leo.”

Ah yes, Leo. The recent mega-hit that reminded audiences just how effortlessly she can hold her ground .

But ask her about the high of being in such a blockbuster, and she smiles without a trace of self-congratulation.

“It was a new space for me,” she admits. “Big canvas, big stakes. But what mattered most was working with people who respected the craft. I’m not into the noise around it. I liked the discipline of it.”

She’s not performing cool—she just is. In a world chasing trends, Madonna moves to her own rhythm.

Even her style says it all: breezy kurtas, vintage florals, bold red lips. Effortless. Unbothered.

When I ask about her five-year plan, she grins.

“I plan for joy. I plan for peace. I plan for purpose.”

That could mean a film—or a forest with no signal. She’s fine either way.

Madonna doesn’t demand attention. She owns it—with quiet power. And she’ll keep showing up, disappearing, and returning—on her terms.

Just like her art.

There’s a kind of presence that doesn’t chase attention—but effortlessly holds it. A quiet confidence that doesn’t need to speak loudly to be heard. In every gesture, every glance, there’s ease. Style, too, follows suit—never trying too hard, yet never fading into the background. A mix of breezy staples, soft silhouettes, vintage moods, and the occasional splash of edge—it all feels lived-in, not styled. Real.

Back inside, lights shift and lenses focus again. Another look, another frame—but nothing feels rehearsed. Just a rhythm she owns, unbothered by the pace around her. Some people leave impressions with spectacle. Others, with silence and substance.

This isn’t about trends or timelines. It’s about being grounded. It’s about rhythm over rush. And it’s a reminder that sometimes, the most magnetic thing in the room is the one not trying to be.
