How many of us even track our waste? Let alone the thought of reducing them. Lauren Singer is the zero waste woman of our decade that we all need to seek inspiration from. She has been keeping five years of trash in a small mason jar which is more than ten times the trash an average person produces in a day. You don’t agree? Think about all the plastic we use and discard from the toothbrush, toothpaste, packaged food products, straws, plastic forks and spoons,  and the list just goes on. She is just the kind of inspiration that we all need on this World Environment week.

So how does Lauren Singer do it? And how can any of us produce such little amount of trash? If these are the kind of questions that you have then Lauren has the perfect answer to all queries.

Bamboo Tooth Brush

Bring about the change right from beginning of your day. Switch to  eco- friendly bamboo tooth brush where every component is plant based even the bristles. It’s time to throw away the plastic toothbrushes and use this bio degradable alternative.

Make your own toothpaste

Making toothpaste can sound like a tedious task. This is a recipe that Lauren Singer follows herself. Mix two tablespoon of coconut oil, one table spoon of baking soda and add few drops of organic peppermint oil, pop it into the refrigerator and it is good to go. Lauren has gone a notch higher and makes her own shampoos, soaps, makeup products and has tonnes of recipes online.

Carrying a cloth bag while grocery shopping is a lesson we have all memorized very well but what good does it do when the products come in packaged boxes. Instead make a visit to the local wholesale producers near your area and take your glass containers along with you to get the grocery items refilled.

Sunny Diamonds have launched a pendant created in tribute to making a difference under the campaign—Design for a Cause— on this World Environment Day. Crafted to represent the universal recycling symbol, the design employs three white gold arrows wrapped around a rose gold circle representing the importance of recycling plastic.

The heart of the pendant is a disc studded with Internally Flawless diamonds. Portraying the earth orbiting the sun, it signifies the importance of doing our bit every day to leave our planet a little more beautiful for our future generations.

Hon’ble Kochi Mayor, Soumini Jain was the chief guest for the event. She officially launched the Unique Jewellery and said, “such efforts should be done more often in our community which encourages people to be aware of the environment.”

Speaking to FWD Media she said, ” On the occasion of World Environment Day,  I would like to share the following message to the people of this city.  To fulfill the slogan ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, each of us has to make the pledge to dispose waste at the source itself. Only then can we truly protect our environment.”

When the whole world hails the environment-friendly slogans and goes haphazard planting trees on June 5 every year, most people do not think beyond cleaning up litter and reducing plastic. But have you ever looked into your wardrobe and wondered that you could make a contribution through your sartorial choices as well? Here are a few things that you can do to be a part of the cycle.

1. Get creative with some DIY

Using the same clothes over can be a great idea, especially with an overhauled look. So this monsoon, pull out those scissors, splash some paint and try some tie and dye. Broke your jewellery? Stick the beads and baubles onto your denim and sparkle! A large number of influencers and bloggers around the globe are making efforts to spread the message of refurbishing and reusing garments. Fashion is the fourth most polluting industry due to its immense textile and apparel waste dumped into heaps. Get your hands dirty for some fun DIY because in a small way you would eventually contribute to the larger cause of it.

2. Check out for the material

Apart from the basic criteria like comfort, fit, fall, and price that we look into while choosing a garment, make it a habit to look at that tiny tag hanging inside the garment. Natural fabrics like linen, organic cotton, cashmere, soy silk, hemp, recycled polyester, organic wool or bamboo would be wiser choices for a tenable wardrobe.

3. Reduce carbon footprint by careful washing

Detergents and afterwash fragrance products keep clothes bacteria-free and clean but they do not favour the environment. According to The Carbon Trust, clothing accounts for around three percent of the global production (or 850bn kg) of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Using chemical free detergents and letting the clothes air-dry rather than quick spin in the machine would be a better option.

4. Donating for a better tomorrow

Bequeathing your old clothes instead of dumping them gets a thumbs up always. Various NGOs and brands have come up with the initiative of accepting contributions for the purpose of reusing and recycling. Brands like H&M and Levi’s has been practising this and have got a successful lead in persuading many to do so. Ethical shopping and cleaning of your closet is indeed a step to achieve the betterment of our environment. Every time you go shopping, a little conscious decision in choosing the right garment is all it takes. Welcome this environment day with a pragmatic oath for a better and brighter tomorrow, starting from your very own wardrobe.

The venture of bringing plastics from the waters to the shore and recycling them for a better purpose put forward by a fisherman community in Kollam is what the world should learn from on World Environment Day

It’s World Environment Day today, lets reflect some thoughts on the environment we live in. Do we ever realise that the footprints we leave on the world are paving way for a polluted planet and a bad future for the coming generation. The vehicles we use for daily transportation, the factories that are established in the name of urbanisation and above all the usage of non-biodegradable plastics that has the capacity to outlive humankind on Earth, all these are leaving its traces and befouling the Mother Earth on a massive daily scale basis. The harmful consequences of plastics are unimaginable and even has the calibre to destroy nature in countless ways. Sadly, water that comprises 71% of the Earth’s surface is the prime victim of this menace. As a step towards bringing an end to this threat, a fisherman community from Kollam, for the last 10 months has successfully ventured the plan of bringing back the plastics which are dumped in the ocean. The process does not end here, but the collected plastics from the ocean are recycled and made into a useful material.

The incredible mission of the fishermen community as part of the World Environment Day theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution” is an exceptional step towards the vision of plastic-free waters. Kerala is one of India’s top producers in fish and fishery is the most depended source of livelihood for more than a million people in the state. But due to the increase in marine pollution, especially the dumping of plastics the fishermen have been witnessing a steady decline in the number of fish. The plastic debris in the oceans is digested by the fish mistaking as food and eventually dies. Eating such fishes can also affect the human health.

In order to bring an end to this, the Fisheries minister of Kerala Mercikutty Amma initiated the campaign Suchitwa Sagaram (clean sea), under which the mission was started. Back then, the fishermen used to release the plastic junks that are entangled in their nets back to the water itself. But after the campaign was initiated the fishermen bring back tonnes of plastics from the sea to the shore during their daily fishing trips. These plastics from the fishing harbour will be fed into a plastic shredding machine and then transformed into a material that is used for road surfacing. Around 5 trawlers and 28 people from the local fishing community which includes 2 women are part of this endeavour.

“So far, they have removed 10 tonnes of plastic bags and plastic bottles and 15 tonnes of discarded nets, plastic ropes and other plastic items from the sea. Even though it is a small group of fishermen, they have freed the sea from 25 tonnes of plastic waste,” said Johnson Premkumar, programme officer to the website worldenvironmentday.
