Veere Di Wedding is a movie that excited the Bollywood fans and enthusiasts much before its release. The anticipation was mainly because the movie marked the comeback of Kareena Kapoor and also because of the all female lead cast in the film. But as soon as the official trailer launched, the movie received flak on social media and attracted controversy. The argument of public dissing on the movie was that, Veere Di Weeding reduces women empowerment and feminism to women drinking, cussing, smoking and openly talking about sexual desires. Many even wanted to boycott the movie for it’s wrong depiction of women empowerment.

So finally during an interview with Anupama Chopra for film companion the cast opened up and addressed the double standards and hypocrisy towards the female led movies in Bollywood. When Anupama asked, is there danger of reducing women empowerment is to behaving more like men or to smoking, drinking, this is how the Sonam Kapoor and Swara Bhaskar replied

Sonam Kapoor jumped right in and made herself clear. She said:

“It’s completely misconstrued what feminism and women empowerment is. It’s a choice. The choice is that we are all four different characters and we all have different ways of behaving.”

Then Swara Bhaskar took over and said: “It’s taken 105 years for mainstream Bollywood to make a film about four girlfriends and none of them are falling in love with the same guy.”She added, “No one asks Anurag Kashyap why his characters swear this much?”

Sonam later talked about how Pyaar Ka Punchnama a highly misogynistic movie was widely celebrated. She added,

“Pyaar Ka Punchnama was very misogynistic. Nobody has said, “don’t you think you’re being misogynistic by portraying women in a certain way or men as commitment phobic?”

Harshvardhan Kapoor is a name that you might not have heard before. This is because he is a newbie in the Bollywood industry and has done only two movies till date. He is the youngest son of Anil Kapoor and brother to Sonam and Rhea Kapoor

Recently he managed to get enough popularity with his interview for Quartz but for all the wrong reasons. Here is what had happened. Earlier this week Harshvardhan Kapoor gave an interview to Quartz. He spoke to Quartz about his fledgling career and about the filmy empire his father build for their family. But what sparked the controversy was when the actor explained why he doesn’t take advice from his star sister, Sonam Kapoor. Here’s what the quote reads like,

Sonam is in her own world, and she’s done all kinds of films. But I also think it’s easier sometimes for a heroine to fit in a lot of films. For example, a Padman is not driven by her, right? So she doesn’t have to be there for a 100 days. Heroines can be more free. For me now, the whole film will hinge on my shoulders. So, I don’t really take advice from her.

Rhea’s a producer. She has more marketing feedback as opposed to creative feedback with script and stuff. Our films (Bhavesh Joshi and Veere di Wedding) are releasing on the same day, so she’s too busy and she couldn’t help us.

Soon he faced the heat as the twitter army started to troll him for his sexist remarks. This is how twitter responded to his unprogressive comment with sarcasm.

Harshvardhan Kapoor responded to the controversy with a tweet, he said, “If you believe everything printed in the media and start accusing people immediately … can’t help you … I never said this … it’s taken completely out of context and misinterpreted ok I’m done defending myself gonna go hang with my sisters now bye.”

While, we  don’t know if the comment was taken out of context as Harshvardhan Kapoor  has said.  What we know for certain is that he has not denied that he had made these comments or neither explained the context in which he made them. Even while taking up a movie like Veere Di Wedding during the conversation which has a all women star cast and is female driven, he still believes that women in cinema are much more free and relaxed.

Harshvardhan Kapoor’s movie, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero and Sonam Kapoor’s Veere Di Wedding were released on the same date. Veere Di Wedding had a huge  box office hit over Bavesh Joshi Superhero. Nevertheless Harshvardhan Kapoor  gave a brilliant performance in the movie. So we really wish that he broadens his horizons and be a contributing part of the progressing phase in Indian cinema.

Hoping that he has already learned the lesson on the significance women in cinema, we wish him all the best.
