Raazi is an espionage drama which tells the story of an Indian woman married off to a Pakistani Army officer to become a spy for her country. Meghna Gulzar took up the mammoth task of recreating 1970’s Pakistan in India. The film revolves around Alia aka Sehmat who becomes an Indian spy on the order of her father played by actor Rajit Kapur. Raazi is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Raazi is based on a real-life story dating back to 1971 Indo-Pak war which makes the film more intriguing than anything else.
The trailer is as thrilling as it can get and has glimpses of Sehmat being trained for her spy duties. The trailer wraps with Sehmat pointing a gun at who appears to be her husband while tears roll down her cheeks.
Karan Johar describes it in just the right words: “The story of an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances!”
This woman too might have been lost, like many other names that have not found a place among the patriots of our country. But thanks to Harinder S Sikka, a former Lieutenant Commander of the Indian Navy, who brought out her story through his novel, ‘Calling Sehmat’ – published in 2008.
Meghna Gulzar, described Alia in the film as, “She is a daughter. Respectful, righteous.”
Alia with Vicky Kaushal. “She is a wife. Ardent, affectionate,” Meghna Gulzar wrote.
Alia as a spy “A secret and a mystery. There is so much more to a woman than what the eye can see.” Meghna Gulzar wrote.
About her role in the film, Alia earlier told news agency IANS, “I think in Raazi audience will see me in completely different avatar at least that is my wish because Raazi as a film is very different.” There is love, betrayal and patriotism in the film. After delivering stellar performances in films like Highway and Udta Punjab, Alia has once again picked up a challenging role in Meghna Gulzar’s espionage thriller Raazi.
