On January 15, 2024, stars attended the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, showcasing their strong looks. Ted Lasso actor Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Allen White of The Bear looked dazzling in Giorgio Armani suits while their co-stars Ayo Edebiri and Hannah Waddingham wore custom Louis Vuitton and Marchesa, respectively. Numerous celebrities were present, and several of traditions from previous ceremonies remained with black and red attire once again ruling the red carpet.

Despite the fact that it is only January, spring was unmistakably in the air on the Emmys red carpet. Many guests wore fresh greens, such as Jessica Chastain’s striking chartreuse Gucci gown and “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham’s delicate mint Marchesa gown embellished with beads.Floral details were also on display, such as on the custom Armani Privé dress that co-star Meghann Fahy wore in “The White Lotus,” actor and comedian Ali Wong’s embroidered satin Louis Vuitton skirt, and Simona Tabasco’s floral decoupage dress by Marni.

From the silent protest by 82 women across the industry to bold and gorgeous appearances by our favourite stars on the coveted red carpet, there was a lot that happened at this year’s event. Over the years, Cannes has become a fashion platform, with attendees vying for a spot among the best dressed. Bollywood reigned the red carpet this year, with one fashionable look after the other delivered by our brilliant actresses and actors alike. Here are the best Cannes looks by Bollywood actresses.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone

Following a mellow response to her Met Gala appearance, DP left no stone unturned for each of her appearance on the Cannes red carpet, the most talked about being her Ashi Studio SS18 couture ruffled mullet cut fuschia dress. She slayed on the red carpet and her picture of her posing with her tongue out took the internet by storm.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor

Bollywood’s in house fashionista was at her A game, riding high on her #EverydayPhenomenal wedding and putting her best fashionable foot forward to deliver one brilliant red carpet look after the other, the highlight of which was her Ralph and Russo custom couture.

Rasika Dugal

Rasika Dugal

Rasika Dugal, who attended the Cannes Film Festival for her film, Manto, directed by Nandita Das and starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role, showed the world that keeping it restrained can do wonders. Her custom Jade gold wrap dress was a statement in its stead: minimalistic is the latest trend. The talented actress later wore a custom Jade navy blue gown while walking the red carpet with 82 prominent women in Cannes for the #MeToo movement.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya

Aishwarya made her 17th appearance on the Cannes red carpet, looking a literal dream in her Michael Cinco custom butterfly gown.

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana also made her Cannes debut and it was exactly like we expected. The Queen actress who is known for her fashionable choices did not disappoint when she rocked a jumpsuit by Nedret Taciroglu and was crowned the Best Dressed at the festival.

Met Gala is the most prestigious fashion event of the year, which took place in New York. This year’s theme was a bold decision and could fire up some controversy. Nevertheless, fashion will dictate this year’s sartorial choices

Met Gala 2018 will explore fashion’s relationship with the Catholic church and features designs from Coco Chanel, John Galliano, and Cristóbal Balenciaga, alongside 40 pieces on loan from the Vatican. Its exclusive guest list is filled with models, designers and industry big-hitters, all personally approved by Vogue Editor-in-Chef Anna Wintour. Like its name suggests, the Met Gala takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, otherwise known as the Met.

Incorporating the theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, the event’s most controversial theme to date, the A-list used this year’s red carpet to show off their most sacred looks. With crowns, crosses, and wings, the 2018 Met Gala red carpet was full of over-the-top ensembles that combined high-fashion and religion. These are the most delighful outfits.

Pop star Rihanna has taken this year’s Met Gala theme to the next level with her pope-inspired outfit, complete with papal headdress, her dress and image is more like an unapologetic feminist queen.

Katy Perry arrived in a gold Versace ensemble and an enormous pair of angelic wings that put Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show wings to shame.

Kylie Jenner wore a black gown with a cutout to it. She held hands with Travis Scott on the carpet.

Sarah Jessica Parker opted for a gold Dolce & Gabbana gown embroidered with sacred hearts and a towering nativity scene headpiece.

Frances McDormand blew the fashion pack away in a turquoise Valentino look from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Spring 2018 couture show. She completed the bold look with a huge floral headpiece.

Ariana Grande pulled her look straight from one of the most famous places of worship on the planet. She Dressed as the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Anna Wintour stepped onto the red carpet dressed as “Cardinal Chanel”

Priyanka Chopra Dressed in a deep burgundy strapless gown. But it was the theatrics that her intricately embroidered and beaded hood that brought to the Met Gala that was the real winner.

Bella Hadid arrived in a black gown with a sheer train and gold cross necklace. She looks regal with an edgy twist, courtesy of her latex bodice.

Kendall Jenner arrived wearing an off-the-shoulder ruched couture top with sheer elbow-length gloves and matching “long train” couture pants. She embodies a “Modern Angel”

This year, the theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, which showcases how Catholicism has influenced fashion throughout history.

Mira Gulati, principal designer and founder of Mirari Jewels, tells how crafting something stunning is the price of creativity

Words by Atheena Wilson     Photographs by Mirari

fwd life a royal feel mira

Dressed in a salmon pink suit, and accessorised with a sparkling diamond choker resting resplendently on her neck, Mira Gulati epitomises poise … just like her jewellery. In a competitive market as luxury jewellery in the country today, Mira has remained unhinged and pursed her dreams which are evident in her ephemeral pieces. An identity of class begins with her logo, featuring elegant sings which looks like that of a gossamer butterfly. Mira says this symbolises angel wings, and was emblematic of a “brand that flies free of tradition and strives for the extraordinary.” With a natural taste for aesthetics, Mira’s designs go beyond just ornate, rather a proud statement on individuality and quality. Although trained as a gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, Mira’s designs showcases the rich heritage and grandeur from the Raj and Mughal eras.

What did you envision when you started Mirari?

A jewel may be very beautiful but it is only when you can personally relate to it, because of its intrinsic meaning or story, that you feel confident about wearing it. Just aesthetically placing stones together is inconsequential. It matters what they portray and hence, you will see my jewels inspired by a myriad – from stories from the rich Indian history, to nature.

fwd life a royal feel Mirari-sketch-(1)

Raj and Mughal eras showcases exquisite jewellery. How do you personally connect with these designs?

I have always admired our queens for their classic trends, beauty and mysterious persona, as they have a striking royal appeal, and have always wanted to create pieces of art, keeping them as muse. You will see a lot of Mughal inspiration in my collections. Nature has also been an underlying inspiration and is reflected in my signature collections comprising of butterflies, peacocks, and other marvels.

You have said that heirloom jewellery involves a strong emotional quotient. How have you been able to redesign your jewellery?

Every piece of jewellery holds a special place in a woman’s heart. We started this redesigning concept with an outlook to keep our jewellery special forever. With an intensive designing thought process, the jewellery is given a new look without touching or hampering the sentiments attached to it. The style is played around with, while the emotional value remains intact. This helps the wearer to don that piece of jewellery without a worry of being outdated yet at the same time exemplifying a statement of elegance and choice.

When it comes jewellery, the price of gemstones and gold is crucial. The concept of design still has an unknown price tag. How has this changed in your customer’s perception?

fwd life a royal feel Mirari's-Elephant-Cuff-(2)

The variation in metals, both alloy and pure, along with a rise in varied gemstones with designs have raised the bar of the consumers’ expectations. Being well-travelled and keeping a keen eye, jewellery connoisseurs have accepted the fact that not only the gemstones or gold are key factors of the price, but also the exclusivity and inimitable designs with excellent craftsmanship play an equal role.

In your opinion, what makes for an “oomph statement” with the different types of Indian wear?

Long chandelier earrings will complement a heavy anarkali suit. A striking cocktail ring goes well with this ensemble. In a saree, keep it elegant with a chic one-line necklace, bangles and small earrings. One can experiment a lot with a lehenga, such as big neck pieces/chokers, rings, bangles, and even headgears go very well.

What makes a jewellery design contemporary?

fwd life a royal feel Amala-from-Mirari-(2)

The meticulous blend of inspirational fashionable facets, with orthodox traditional aestheticism, makes a design contemporary. The process of creation is evolutionary and anything regal or imbued with pristine charm is attracts attention.

Which artists have inspired you the most?

There are many artists who inspire me in my work, each for different reasons and artistic sensibilities. One of my favourites, though, is Vincent Van Gogh. He was a passionate, moody artist whose love of nature, drawing and watercolours reflected in all his works and creations. His signature inspired artwork like “Sunflower” and “Almond Branches” were beautiful renditions of nature on canvas. In fact, one of Mirari’s creations has also been inspired by his iconic work, named ‘Starry Starry Night’.

What advice would you give on pulling off jewellery with class?

The most important advice I would like to give is to make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. Do not forcefully sport something, just because it is in trend.

fwd life a royal feel Mira-Gulati-(7)

What are the trends from Mirari on the red carpet?

Our cocktail rings and earrings have made sensations on the red carpet already. One fine example is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who recently sported our ring for a red carpet event.

What is your favourite piece from your designs?

Mirari’s polki peacock earrings are one of my most treasured pieces of jewellery. Its intricate design and delicate contours exude a feeling of rare elegance and matchless grace.

In the spotlight :

An iconic piece of jewellery from a movie
Necklaces worn by Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge.
Most appropriate jewellery for a strapless gown
Classic diamond choker.
Least explored gemstone
Paraiba tourmaline.
A jewellery trend that’s making waves
There are two – redesigning and modular jewellery.
A major jewellery fashion faux pas.
Sporting together different (solo) gemstone jewels in different pieces. For instance, emerald earrings with a ruby neck-piece and sapphire ring look gaudy.
