Pretham, a movie which disassembled the concepts of horror movies in Malayalam cinema was graced with humour and sheer cinematic brilliance of Ranjit Sankar’s directorial prowess, the kind of movie which can give you the dark chills like the popular Hollywood movie Conjuring. Jayasurya’s lead role in the movie was one of the most appreciated characters in Malayalam film history, his excellent command and control over his role won hearts all around. For some it brought back the nostalgia and mysticism that Sunny’s (Mohanlal) character in manichitrathazhu once did.
Jayasurya is all set to return to return for the movie’s sequel, Pretham 2. Apprently, Ranjith Sankar will direct the sequel also and Jayasurya will be continuing in his role as John Don Bosco, the expert mentalist. Pretham which released in 2016 had Jayasurya, Govind Padmasoorya, Aju Varghese, Sharaf U Dheen, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Pearle Maaney and Shruthi Ramachandran in significant roles.
According to the updates and speculations till now, the sequel will apparently dive deeper into Jayasurya’s character John Don Bosco. Further, the characters and story for the sequel are in a developing stage and will not be a continuation of the first part. The movie is expected to hit theatres by December this year.

The shoot for the film Njan Marykutty has wrapped up and the makers have announced that the movie will be hitting the big screens on June 15. Jayasurya, well known for his extraordinary acting skills, is expected to have come up with a fine performance in this movie. Jewel Mary, Innocent, Joju George, Aju Varghese, and Suraj Venjaramoodu are also part of this movie’s cast. Jayasurya impressed many with his acting chops in movies like Aadu 2, which was a blockbuster and Captain, a sports biopic on the late footballer V P Sathyan. This is yet another time Jayasurya and Ranjith Sankar are uniting for a project.
The teaser of the film was released on March 10 with the tagline of the film “His story is hers too” and needless to say, the teaser has grabbed many eyeballs.
Njan Marykutty will address the issues faced by trans people. Jayasurya looks totally different in the new look proving that there is no end to experimentation in the world of cinema.
The movie has the actor playing Marykutty, a man who is a woman in mind and body, who has gone through a sex change surgery. The actor assured that the movie will not hurt the trans community but will instead be a gift for them. For decades, the members of the trans community have been largely misrepresented in Indian films. They are usually portrayed as unlikable and vicious characters on the big screen. However, things have been changing with time as some of the leading actors have been changing this perception by choosing to tell the stories of the members of this community. We will have to wait and watch how the film and Jayasurya contribute towards representing trans people.

No Malayali is unfamiliar with Mollywood’s power combination of much loved actor Jayasurya, and Ranjith Sankar, a director who has a number of successful movies on his mantel. Their fourth movie together, Punyalan Private Limited, released this November, as delighted audiences saw the actor revisit the role of Joy Thakolkaaran, from Punyalan Agarbattis.
Conversation with the duo goes as any fan would expect, with Jayasurya being his humorous, yet no nonsense self and Ranjith, with his gravitas, being a perfect foil to the actor. They spoke little about the new movie, believing their work would show for itself when theatres across the land screened it to the public, but were more forthcoming about their creative collaboration, on and off set, and the camaraderie they share with each other in real life.
One is offered a true, but brief, glimpse into the relationship that an actor and director build over the years, perhaps offering a formula for what goes as success in the Malayalam film industry.
Find out who is the bigger foodie between the two, and who is more of a gadget geek; how does Ranjith Sankar go about his shooting schedules, and what would Jayasurya have been doing in a parallel universe. Read about all this and more in the November issue of FWD Life magazine, in stands now.
