With a strong box office start, Hichki is all set to rake in the moolah; evidence that audiences everywhere missed Rani Mukherjee’s bright smile and delightfully husky voice. Hichki brings this to audiences, and how! The movie sees Rani play Naina Mathur, an aspiring teacher who happens to suffer from Tourette Syndrome.

School authorities, prejudiced and unwilling, swayed by Naina’s wit and charm, agree to give her a chance. A weighted chance, however, as Naina is expected to teach a class others had washed their hands of. In true Sidney Poitier fashion, Naina, overcomes all challenges, winning hearts along the way.

The movie has seen largely positive reviews, with the movers and shakers of Bollywood, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, to name a few, taking to social media to express their support and admiration for the movie and Rani herself.

The critical reviews, however, claim that the movie, though dealing with complex issues, was lacking in depth. The plot seemed to drag a bit in the second half and the storyline was quite cliched. The fact that the main character was suffering from Tourette’s seems to have been relegated to “window-dressing” and “awards-show bait”, one said.

And yet, on one point, all reviews were unanimous: Rani Mukherjee was her stellar self throughout.
