Director Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic , Sanju based on actor Sanjay Dutt’s real life story, has entered the Rs 300 crore club at the Indian box office, and now competing with lifetime collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tiger Zinda Hai and Hirani’s own PK. The film has already broken the record of Deepika Padukone’s massive hit of the this year- Padmaavat, which made a business of 215 Crore at the Indian box office. Currently, Sanju has made a box office collection of 316.64 Crore in India and over 500 crore worldwide.

Rave reviews and a strong word of mouth have worked entirely in favour for Rajkumar Hirani’s film, as it continues to have 30% occupancy rate across 2,000 screens in its third week of release.  Sanju is presently facing some competition from the recently released movies Soorma and the Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, despite their fresh start at the box office, the two films have failed to gross the kind of awe-inspiring numbers the Sanjay Dutt biopic has.

Trade analyst and and Indian film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted the figures on Sunday and wrote that the film is one of only eight to cross the Rs 300 crore mark in India, following PK, Dangal, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan, Padmaavat and Bahubali 2, which also holds the record for being the only film to make more than Rs 500 crore in India.

Sanju has broken quite a few records since the day of its release. From being the highest single-day earner, the highest weekend opener to being the only movie to have churned cash despite having a non-holiday release, Sanju has truly broken some barriers. The Sanjay Dutt biopic is one of the most successful Hindi film of the year 2018, and the movie is expected to cross more milestones in the coming days.

Shamshera is going to be an action-adventure film that will be directed by Karan Malhotra under the banner of Yash Raj Films (YRF) and they are completely thrilled about the power-packed cast for the film. Vaani Kapoor will be seen romancing with Ranbir Kapoor for the first time on the big screen and Sanjay Dutt is going to be the merciless villain.

YRF promises to present Ranbir in a never seen before avatar. The actor will be seen carrying out a role of dacoit in Shamshera. Ranbir had earlier said in a statement, “Shamshera is exactly the film I was looking for. While growing up watching Hindi commercial cinema, I had an image of what a film hero should be doing. Shamshera allows me to do everything that I had imagined and it’s a very exciting project for me. Karan is going to take me completely out of my comfort zone and I’m looking forward to this challenge.”

Talking about the cast, director Karan Malhotra made a statement saying, “Vaani plays Ranbir’s love interest in the film and is a very important collaborator in his character’s journey. Her character graph is interlinked to the plot of the film making her a crucial catalyst in our hero’s rebellious mission. Vaani is a perfect fit for the role. She is a fine actor, a fabulous dancer and a gorgeous Hindi film heroine. We wanted someone absolutely fresh to wow audiences on the big screen and she beautifully fits that brief.”

Shamshera is going to be Sanjay Dutt’s first YRF film, whereas this turns out to be Vaani’s third film with YRF after the debut Shudh Desi Romance (2013) and Befikre (2016).

This is the second time Karan Malhotra will be working with Sanjay after Agneepath. The shooting will start by the end of this year and is expected to wrap by mid 2019.

The teaser of Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt titled Sanju was released on Tuesday, leaving critics and audiences in a frenzy. While the launch and the film’s tagline ‘one man..many lives’ trended all day on micro-blogging site Twitter, the teaser had garnered 16 million views in less than 24 hours on YouTube with industry experts pointing out the acute similarity between lead actor Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay’s looks.

Here’s portrayal of  Sanjay Dutt’s epic life through Ranbir’s various styles from the teaser.

1980-1983

Sanjay Dutt made his Bollywood movie debut with the box office hit Rocky in 1981. He won hearts with  Rocky. He started using drugs after his mother died of cancer. He was 22 years old at the time. In 1982, he spent five months in jail for drug possession. Soon after, he joined a rehabilitation centre in Texas, USA.

1985-1993

After spending 5 months in jail, Sanjay came back and starred in Vidhaata. It was the highest grossing film in Hindi. Again Dutt was arrested for illegal possession of arms. He was accused of accepting a delivery of weapons and explosives from gangsters who were also implicated in the Mumbai serial blasts in 1993.

1995-1998

In 1995, Dutt was granted bail by the Supreme Court. In 90’s he saw a lot of commercial success movies like Daag, Vaasthav, Haseena Man Jaegi but the dark side ended up going to jail again.

2000-2002

The  2000’s was life-changing for Sanjay Dutt. Dutt won a Filmfare Award & a Star Screen Award in the best actor category for Vaastav: The Reality. And participated in many commercial movies.

2003-2008

In this time he achieved popularity because of his character as  Munna Bhai. He also won an award for the best comedian category for this movie.It was in the same year Dutt surrendered before a special court in Mumbai that tried cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act. The 23-year old trial had ended and he was sent to 5 years in Prison.

2016-present

On 25th Feb 2016, Sanjay Dutt was released from prison after nearly three years. He was out 103 days early on the grounds of “good conduct.  Not just free but also a changed man. A man who had seen it all and was determined to fix his mistakes and start a fresh life. He has become a major source of inspiration for everybody around!

Hirani’s film claims audiences will witness everything from Dutt’s drug addiction to his imprisonment and multiple marriages. Sanju is slated to release on 29th June 2018. Trailer for the movie will be launched along with Avengers on 27 April 2018, worldwide.

Raazi, directed by Meghna Gulzar is an upcoming period thriller and co-stars Vicky Kaushal along with Alia. The film is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat, about a Kashmiri spy married to a Pakistani man during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on May 11th.

Neerja was a movie that was critically acclaimed and has received many accolades both for the movie and for the stellar acting as well. It was also the debut of Jim Sarbh, who played the hijacker Khalil in the movie, into the film industry. An Indian theater actor/director and film actor based in Mumbai, Jim Sarbh was no novice to the field of acting.

FWD Life got in touch with him to ask a few quick questions about his upcoming releases, ‘Raabta’ & ‘A Death In The Gunj’. The light-hearted actor replied with a dash of humor thrown in through the answers.

Can you tell me about your upcoming projects ‘A Death In The Gunj’ and ‘Raabta’?

‘A Death In The Gunj’ is about a little sprite type fellow trying to play with the big kids and not being equipped. There’s a pain in the sprite like there always is and old friends reunited are often oblivious.
Raabta is all kinds of films wrapped up in one.

Your first movie Neerja was based on a real incident, Raabta is a fantasy-themed movie. How different was it from one another?

One was trying to be gritty documentary style, the other is full masala type.

In Raabta, you play characters set in different time periods. How was the experience?

Two characters for the price of one. Past life guy: some wood who wants to play with fire, present life guy: fire trying to burn through the water. Shot in Budapest (present) and Mauritius (past): that was sweet.

How was working with Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon? Can you recall the whole experience for us?

No, I can’t recall the whole experience for you. Yeah, it was dandy. Sushant very funny and responsive. Kriti, earnest and driven.

How did you prepare for the role in Raabta?

Worked out and ate a lot. Straightened my hair. Tried to learn the lines and imbue them with meaning and style.

I didn’t lock myself up in a room for three weeks drawing pictures of Kriti under extreme sleep deprivation or anything.

What do you like more? Theater/film? Acting/direction?

Film. Acting.

You’ve got upcoming projects with some big names in the industry, like Sanjay Dutt’s biopic with Ranbir Kapoor, Padmavati with Ranveer Singh & Shahid Kapoor and Anand L Rai movie with Shahrukh Khan. Can you tell a bit about the projects?

Currently on the sets of Sanjay Dutt biopic as we speak. Ranbir’s cool. Rajkumar Hirani Sir is cool. Generally cool situation.

Padmavati: can’t wait to see how this film shapes up!

But how they’re going? That’s a secret. Especially the last one with Anand Rai, that one’s a secret from even me (I’m not in it.).

Recently you were in Kochi for the play by Kalki. How was your experience at Kochi?

Recently? Ages ago man. I was playing a new character in that play without enough preparation so obviously, I acted badly.
