It’s too much of a cliche´ to say that a picture is worth a thousand words. An iconic photograph should leave us visually spellbound and not always lost for words. A single photograph must become indelible as a supernova in the galaxy of our minds. FWD frames the work of iconic fashion photographers who saw photography more than a mere representation of life.

1950s – Richard Avedon

“I think all art is about control – the encounter between control and the uncontrollable.”

It may not be jarring as it seems, but Richard Avedon pushed beyond boundaries to create a contrast during those conservative days. In this striking photograph, a contrast is achieved with a lady’s silk Dior gown against the rough trunk of an elephant.

1980s – Annie Liebovitz

“When I take a picture I take 10 percent of what I see.”

Famously known as a celebrity photographer, she captures them in a different light. Frank Kline’s famous abstract painting was the result of his emotions that the city aroused in him and he did not care to be in the painting. A painting that Steve Martin could only see himself in it.

David Lachapelle is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining unique hyper – realistic aesthetic with profound social messages. In this case, it was to portray the extravagant lifestyle of Elton John.

2010s – Tarun Khiwal

Tarun Khiwal is a photographer who goes beyond the standard rules of photography from the poses to the set rules. He’s known for his unconventional techniques of bringing out any subject to life and uncovering the hidden cam.
