After proving his absolute versatility in a effective paranormal thriller-cum-comedy Pretham, Jayasurya will soon return for the its Sequel; Pretham 2

Text Credits: Shibul Pavithran

Pretham, a movie which disassembled the concepts of horror movies in Malayalam cinema was graced with humour and sheer cinematic brilliance of Ranjit  Sankar’s directorial prowess, the kind of movie which can give you the dark chills like the popular Hollywood movie Conjuring. Jayasurya’s lead role in the movie was one of the most appreciated characters in Malayalam film history, his excellent command and control over his role won hearts all around. For some it brought back the nostalgia and mysticism that Sunny’s (Mohanlal) character in manichitrathazhu once did.

Jayasurya is all set to return to return for the movie’s sequel, Pretham 2. Apprently, Ranjith Sankar will direct the sequel also and Jayasurya will be continuing in his role as John Don Bosco, the expert mentalist. Pretham which released in 2016  had Jayasurya, Govind Padmasoorya, Aju Varghese, Sharaf U Dheen, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Pearle Maaney and Shruthi Ramachandran in significant roles.
According to the updates and speculations till now, the sequel will apparently dive deeper into Jayasurya’s character John Don Bosco. Further, the characters and story for the sequel are in a developing stage and will not be a continuation of the first part. The movie is expected to hit theatres by December this year.

Who is slated to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival to be held in France. Pearle Manney will be part of the team of the film Who, in which she plays an integral role

Who is an upcoming fantasy psychological thriller written and directed by Ajay Devaloka, which is produced by Corridor6 Films. The film features prominent actors Shine Tom Chacko, Shruthy Menon, Pearle Maaney, Rajeev Pillai and Sankar R Nair in lead roles. The trailer of the movie is just 38 seconds long. The short-video perfectly captures the mood of the story, which is a crime thriller.

Who movie team presented an official tribute video to the great musician Teho Teardo

The song is about pursuing a new future by outgrowing the past, and to sort out a new identity within an individual. This video looks creative and a cherry on the top is the potrayal of Shruthy Menon, Pearle Maaney, Shine Tom Chacko and Rajeev Pillai.

Who is a science fiction movie based on the thought of dream interpretation with value on magic realism. Time travel is another significant aspect of the movie.  Hollywood vocalist Uyanga Bold has sung a song for Who. The story revolves around the mysterious events which occur in a valley. “The story was conceptualised as series of chapters, and Who is the second chapter, which will release first” says the director. It also marks the acting debut of former district collector of Kozhikode, Prasanth Nair, known as collector bro. Who is a sequel to another film Isabella, a psychological noir movie.

When it comes to traveling, Pearle Maaney does not go en route the easy way but rather lives and rides her own way.

Ruminant in Ruins

A dawn in an intense indigo flows through her saree, belted by a silver horizon. Her smoky eyes capture it all, like the shadows cast across the colonnade. The morning resonates with the delicate sound of the tasseled metallic bells on her chain and the music from the hall of pillars. The light shines on her intricate silver jewelry, handcrafted like the pillars of granite. Standing tall, they have watchful lions that have seen the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. The kingdom that grew along the banks of the Tungabhadra reflects the strength of Dravidian architecture.

pearle-fwd-life3

In Line with Symmetry

pearle-fwd-life6

The Vijayanagara Kingdom was in contact with many cultures, employing different architectural languages. The region has temples that explored the Dravidian style and palaces that took to the Islamic one. The art of ikat on her saree follows the line of the decorative arches that had seen royal entourages. Traditional crafts take a contemporary turn, magnified by the canary yellow blouse. In a Pushkarani or a stepped well, the pleats of her saree lay stacked as the stone slabs of the steps. The magenta rippled seamlessly like the water in the tank, a sacred commodity.

pearle-fwd-life2

Prowess in Structure

pearle-fwd-life5

Her mudra focuses her inner goddess, draped in black and vermillion -a stance frozen in time with the carved friezes of the Dravidian temple gateway. Like the stepped shikhara reaching for the heavens, she stands tall, enclosing a sacred notion in the sanctum. She leaves the Maya behind as she moves around the Pradakshinapatha through the series of spaces that connect to the Garbagriha. The geometric patterns of the handwork reflect the geometry of the built form. Her feet adorned with Ghungroos bring together an era that celebrated art and culture.

pearle-fwd-life7

I have a vivid recollection of catching her on TV the first time. It was a chat show and here was a young lady who was beautiful in a very unconventional way; Curly, untamed hair, a child-like face and above all a demeanor that had the stamp of confidence.

As she pulled one antic after another, I could sense that she was not goofing around like it seemed but had a clear idea as to what she was up to. In fact, she gave me the impression of being in control. At this point, I have to make it clear that I am not he regular fanboying kind, not one bit. But here I was intrigued by this woman. I had to swing into action and I did. Taking aid of every fan’s primary tool, Google, I found out a few things about this woman with a strange name, Pearle Maaney.

Cut to three years later, here I was sitting right across a table with Pearle Maaney. Three years had changed quite a few things. For one, the intrigue, I thought had left me. But Pearle Maaney by now had become a household name in Kerala and the Malayalakara adored her.

Giving a Hoot

I was advised to make this a fun interview, something to go with Pearle’s persona. Not being exactly the fun guy, I was somehow hoping to employ my rather sloppy sense of humor to churn out something that could be passed off as fun. But secretly I was wishing the interview had happened at Hampi where the pictures were shot. I wanted it to be with her amidst the majestic ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, having a conversation with the Indian princess, the pictures of who left us spellbound. I plainly wanted it to be profound and honestly gave two hoots about fun. But no, here I was at a café in Kochi, trying to pull off a fun interview and disastrously failing at it.
Pearle was dressed in a bohemian jacket and looked like a dream. I attacked her with a few regular questions and she gave me long, patient answers. Then we generally got talking and somewhere between the proceedings of the interview, the conversation started getting serious, philosophical even. No, it was not I who pushed her towards it; it has she who led the way. I being a sucker for stories wanted to hear of her about her all the way from her childhood. And she being the natural conversationalist, readily obliged. Right from her childhood obsession with bikes, the good old days of Road Rash to her college days in Christ College and her foray into stardom, she told me stories of everything.

Pearle Maaney is a polymath. I don’t care if that is an old-fashioned word, but that suits her best. She has played multiple roles and her talents are many. She has been an RJ, a DJ, a VJ, a dancer, a singer, an actor, even an activist. But during the conversation, I discovered another facet of hers; that of a dreamer, a visionary. I thought this was the aspect that fuelled her and made her who she was. As the discussions moved into media, society, and violence the society, she made it clear that what we sowed was what we reaped. “We cannot expect a reformed society when all that we feed it is violence.” I thought it all totaled up, the Hampi shoot, her bohemian attire and the timeless wisdom that she spoke about.

The Good, Bad and the Ugly

She has never been ashamed of her failures rather she is proud of the fact that she has overcome them. We know of the Pearle who is confident and sure of herself. But she says she has had her hard times, her doubting moments too. A dark time when she doubted herself and was finding it difficult to recoup from falls. She tells me that it was with a conscious effort that she got out of that pit. But she also gives credit to many people that she has met in her life for changing her and above all her hero, her dad.

She also had a gem of a tale about accepting criticism. She recently faced a lot of flak for something that apparently was considered outrageous by many. The internet went absolutely vicious on her. But she chose to look at the scathing attacks on her as a sign of the love that people had for her. “I chose to color all the reactions that I got with love and ended up getting more love in return. That’s how the Law of Attraction works for me.” So, where would I see Pearle Maaney a few years down the line, I wanted to know. She laughs. “Everywhere, anywhere. I am carving my own path. I shall find my own destinations.” Peace, love and music to you, Pearle!

IMG_9263The time was 7.30 am. Before the heat raised temperatures and tempers in the city, FWD’s cover models for the month of September got their juvenile spirits explode at the studio.

To me their initial conversation looked as if they were breaking the ice. But in no time the ambiance transformed with the entry of the photographer, Kavya who flew all the way from Bangalore to join them. The set began to illuminate with energy having such bubbly and enthusiastic celebrities around. The quaternion seemed to be celeb genus; anyone would wish to work with– carefree and relaxed. Breakfast didn’t take us long. The beauties and the hotties after giving themselves a full stretch moved for their makeover all excited glimpsing through their individual outfits.
Fitting into their respective casual outfits, they sat down for the makeover chitchatting with the stylist as the revolution of their new look was progressing. The shoot began with the stunt actor Unni Mukunthan striking a pose on a white Renault Koloeos. As it came to an end, Pearly Maaney, Maria and Anu Mohan joined him.
For us and for them the shooting moments were hilarious. Kavya and Pearly who were constantly engaging the team with their amazingly entertaining sense of humour had the rest bow in appreciation to their instant wit that had sidelined stand up comedy.
The entire day’s shoot came to an end with a glamorous array of pictures for us and an opportunity for the jingbang to gel with their co-stars in their upcoming flick ‘Last Supper’.

unni_mukundanDo you feel at ease working with new generation directors?
Unni : Haven’t got to team with ‘new generation directors’, I have no say in expressing my experience working with them. On a personal note, I regard working with seniors as they’re helpmates who have taught me a good share out of their experience.
Pearle : Be it young or senior, they must be totally dedicated. With a young director alongside, there will be fun, but what if enjoyment crosses its boundaries shifting focus. I personally wouldn’t gel with such a person or his principles.
Anu : All the time I got to work with debut directors. Of them, director Shafi is the only one who is comparatively senior. To me he is a friendly person and I had no hiccups teaming with him.
Mariya : I’m just a movie old. Working with Kalam sir (Associate of director Lal Jose), I experienced complete disciple on the sets. It could be the ethics passed on by his guru.

Your worst habit….
Unni : I flare up like wildfire.
Pearle : As a lil girl I used to monitor people and without having a word I used to judge them. But now I don’t think I have any traits that can be referred to as ‘worst’.
Anu : I sleep like a log. As I go off to bed late I find it difficult to rise early. So my wake up time is mostly close to brunch.
Mariya : I boil my head and lament over silly matters.

mariyaA thing about the opposite sex that puzzles you the most…..
Unni : I never understand what they mean and what they don’t. It needs patience to figure out what runs through their mind.
Pearle : Females confuse me. They switch moods like how cut apples turn brown. I have also wondered why boys should have all the fun riding bikes. To prove myself I secured a two wheeler license; drove in a zigzag manner on the roads until I was caught red-handed by the cops.
Anu : What Pearle said is so true. Girls are so moody and emotional that they tend to forget what they say in the midst of their emotional turmoil.
Mariya : Men are poor at expressing emotions. We cannot possibly guess from their blank behaviour.

Do you believe that creativity comes along with puffing joints?
Unni : Not at all. It is like blaming art for doping just like random excuses alcoholics’ cook up.
Pearle : Its utter crap. I know people who are addicted to this deadly habit. Movies too are promoting this trend which I feel is not right. When I was a psychology student I got to intern at NIMHANS, Bangalore. There I had met patients who even mistook cocaine to be their girlfriends.
Anu : Not necessary. I know IT professionals who take it daily as a stress buster. There is also a misconception among the public that weeds are more rampant in the film industry. No…It’s there in every field, taken mostly for socialising.
Mariya : I am wholly against it. I do come across individuals who mull over smoking weed. For them it helps their imagination to cross boundaries.

pearle_maaneyWhat should one do to get your special attention?
Unni : Try not to be stupid.
Pearle : His/her humour sense, not at the cost of hurting others. Cracking jokes by making fun of others just as we watch shows mimicking politicians’ and their offices during the solar scam…that is emotional murder.
Anu : A girl need not do anything. Her looks are more than enough.
Mariya : My attention…I guess it’s their genuineness and intelligence.

Upcoming films….
Unni : ‘Last Supper’ in which I play a hacker named ‘Alby’. Then it’s ‘Vikramadithya’ a Lal Jose film that is based on friendship; the shoots of which will commence by mid March. And you can watch we portraying a comedy flick ‘Iyer in Pakistan’ directed by Fazal.
Pearle : For now it’s ‘Last Supper’. Movies weren’t my focus, but when director Samir Tahir approached me with the character in ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’, I had no second thoughts. Good crew, bikes, interesting script…
Anu : ‘Last Supper’ directed by Vinil, ‘Pianist’, a bilingual movie in Malayalam and Tamil were I play the lead role and Roopesh Peethambaran’s ‘You Too Brutus’ starring Sreenivasan, Tovino, Aju, Amalda Liz ( a top model) and more characters.
Mariya : Same here…Vinil Vasu’s ‘Last Supper’ a movie about four friends on an adventurous trip. All four of us are co-stars in the movie.

anu_mohanCelebrating Onam for you is…
Unni : Undoubtedly it’s onam sadya. Having being in Ahmadabad for about 21 years, I felt more of a Malayali there than a Malayali boy residing in Kerala. I’m saying it as I was an active member at the Malayali Samajam, running on my toes engaged in Onam preparation for atleast four days prior to Onam. Collecting donations for onam sadya, joining the group for sadya preparations… I think it’s that togetherness what Onam demands.
Pearle : Ours is a joint family. The celebrations begin the previous night with the plucking of flowers for ‘attapookkalam’, and preparations for sadya. The festivities reach its highest by afternoon with music, dance and clicking pictures.
Anu : I will be at my paternal home in Kollam. There we celebrate Onam with sadya, a family cricket league at the courtyard and winding up the day’s festivities with some music. Last year as my father passed away, we had no celebrations. But this year as it’s my brother’s (Vinu Mohan) first Onam post marriage, we’re thinking of revelling.
Mariya : Till 2011, Onam was just another day. In North Onam celebrations are within the four walls. But now as I’m here in Kerala I wish to celebrate it as a family get-together.
