Kerala Bhasha Institute (State Institute of Languages) is taking its books beyond Kerala in a progressive attempt to promote reading among the Malayali diaspora. This is for the first time in 50 years that the Institute has decided to organize book fairs in major Indian cities

The Kerala Bhasha Institute (State Institute of Languages) is organising book fairs in major Indian cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai as part of a first-of-its kind ‘look beyond Kerala’ programme. The first exhibition in Chennai will be held at the Kerala Samajam School from July 1 to 8.

Kerala Bhasha Institute was established on September 16, 1968, with the aim of developing Malayalam into an effective medium of communication for modern scientific and technological knowledge, for preparing Malayalam text books for higher education and for reinventing the language so as to enable it to adapt to the changing needs of the times.

Twelve years after its inception, on November 1, 1980, a regional centre was set up in Kozhikode. The governing body was headed by the then Chief Minister E M S Namboothiripad and N V Krishna Warrier was the first director of the Institute.

“The Bhasha Institute was established in 1968. But this is the first time  we are looking beyond the Sahya mountains. We have selected cities that have a huge Malayali population,” institute director Prof. V Karthikeyan Nair said. The idea is to promote books published by the institute and to encourage the use and study of the Malayalam language. The second exhibition in the series would be held in Bengaluru in October, Karthikeyan Nair said.

The very first publications of the Institute included 16 glossaries (shabdaavali) including a Vijnaanashabdaavali and a Maanavikashabdaavali. Such glossaries were made in keeping with the guidelines for technical terminology put in place by a standing commission dealing with the production of scientific and technological glossaries. In 1996, then the Computer Book Series scheme was initiated, the Institute changed its policies with regard to its glossaries.

Till this date, the institute has published – mostly in Malayalam – approximately 5,000 books covering language and literature, science, technology and humanities. This year, the institute is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

By redefining societal norms and conventions, the parents of this Mumbai girl decided to name their daughter by including both their names as her middle name and last name

Text credits: Lakshmi Priya

The one who carried her little one in the womb for ten months, the one who spent sleepless nights attending the weeping and woes of her baby, the one who is capable of bringing smiles on the stubborn face of her child and the only one who never leaves her dear one even in the most darkest days of life -Mother, the shadow that never allows her child to walk alone. At the end of the day, after all her unbound sacrifices for others, what does she get in return? From the last name of her child to the rituals done for his/her wedding, the mother does not get any honour despite standing still like a pillar of support. But a couple based in Mumbai did not choose to follow the conventions that are prevailing for generations and instead challenged the stereotypes by making a slight yet better change in their daughter’s name. The daughter was given her mother’s name as middle name and father’s name as the last name and yes, that’s why her story is different and is garnering wide social media attention.

In the Facebook page of Humans of Bombay, this girl’s story of struggles of having her mother’s name as the middle name came to light and netizens are pouring out their love to her and her family. The girl’s family did not have any gender roles as both her parents engaged in their profession as well as household chores. Her parents believed that both of them have equality in bringing up their children so why not include her mother’s name too in their daughter’s name. This was no big deal until they moved to India and Indians started having a problem with it. The girl narrates her story of facing trouble at school records due to teachers refusing to acknowledge her middle name, labelled as a strange girl by classmates and people owing an explanation for her different name.

Facebook users are showering the girl with more power and praise. One of the most relevant comments from a user says “Dear Lady with a cause, The sad truth is that because patriarchy is so deeply embedded in the nation’s DNA, no one even feels the need to question it. It has become a way of living. You, me and a few like-minded ones are pretty much like the Batman- superheroes (in our own right) that the country needs but doesn’t deserve. Much Love!”

The girl also says that even though she fell prey to the criticisms and felt bad about her name, over time she realised the power of her name and the exceptional mentality of her parents who choose to be different. And she is now proudly smashing patriarchy, challenging the stereotypes and inspiring everyone to do the same.

Team Naach comes all the way from Mumbai to Kochi to conduct their first workshop in this city. Sonal Devraj and Nicole Concessao, together known as Team Naach became popular face with their dance covers. This edition of YouTube FanFest had their performances at various stages

Team Naach will be conducting two days long dance workshop on May 26 and 27 at Kshetra Dance School. Team Naach says, “We’ve received a lot of requests to come to Kochi on our YouTube channel and other social media handles. It was time to give the fans what they wanted and finally conduct our first workshop in Kochi. Also, Kshetra Dance School invited us and have given us this opportunity, so we are very thankful to them as well. “ This duo have their own choreography for popular trending songs. They conduct dance classes and workshops across Mumbai. They also conduct workshops in other major cities.

When the Jimmiki Kammal was creating a wave across the country and beyond, the internet was flooded with dance covers of the song. Sonal and Nicole had added their own flavor to this trend. With a beautiful backdrop that sets the right festive mood, draped in Kerala saree Sonal and Nicole’s version of Jimmiki Kammal has its own swag. The dance cover has over 9 million views. Producer and actor Vijay Babu happened to be one of the viewers, who offered them the song Changaathi Nannayal from Aadu 2.

With this their fan following in Kerala surged. They say, “Two videos on our channel have helped us connect with our south audience – Jimmiki Kammal and Changaathi Nannayal. These are the videos that established Team Naach in the south. We even had the opportunity to perform at YouTube Fan Fest in Chennai and Bangalore and that has helped us connect with our fans. We wanted to make sure we touch base with our fans in Kerala as well which is why we are looking forward to the workshop.”

Talking about their experience during the shoot for the film song, they recall how challenging it was to learn the dance choreography on the spot. Yet it was exciting and they enjoyed it.

The workshop session will start with a warm-up regime followed by learning the elements of choreography.  The song for the workshop is going to be a surprise but they do promise a lot of fun.

Indian legendary architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi is being honoured with Nobel equivalent, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, an announcement was made on Wednesday. The Pune based architect, who is 90 years old, will be the first Indian to get the honour. Doshi came from a family of furniture makers, and in one interview he credited his early architecture inspiration to his grandfather’s house, upon which new levels were repeatedly added to accommodate a large joint family of three uncles and their families. He is an alumnus of the JJ School of Architecture in Mumbai.

“I owe this prestigious prize to my guru, Le Corbusier,” said Doshi, adding, “His teachings led me to question identity and compelled me to discover new regionally adopted contemporary expression for a sustainable holistic habitat.”Doshi did his architectural apprenticeship under Le Corbusier in his Paris atelier. To this day, at the entrance of his cabin, Doshi keeps a portrait of the Swiss architect next to representations of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesha.

He describes architecture as an extension of the body, and his ability to attentively address function while regarding climate, landscape, and urbanization is demonstrated through his choice of materials, overlapping spaces, and utilization of natural and harmonizing elements.

“Balkrishna Doshi has always created an architecture that is serious, never flashy or a follower of trends. With a deep sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to his country and its people through high quality, authentic architecture, he has created projects for public administrations and utilities, educational and cultural institutions, and residences for private clients, among others,” the Pritzker jury said.

” Its a much-deserved recognition that has come to Prof. Doshi, though long overdue. Early this year we had a meeting with him at ‘Sangath’, his office in Ahmedabad, during which he wanted us to show him a few of our works and while doing so, he sat through it with a twinkle in his eyes. What amazed us the most was the childlike enthusiasm with which he spoke to us about our project and what in it interested him the most. Its hard to tell that he just turned 90 last year, looking at the energy he carries with him.
‘Paths Uncharted’, the autobiography, takes us on an exciting journey and is a must-read for anyone who would like to understand the enigma called Balakrishna Doshi,” said Lijo Jos and Reny Lijo. (A well-known architect firm from Thrissur, Kerala)

Raja Arjun, Founder and Director of strategy, AQB group from Bangalore says:  I worked in Ahmedabad for a short while and since then the place has called me back. This happened on one of my visits, got a chance to speak with him with a small band of young architects with no idea about the world ahead. I asked him that,  What does it take to design consistently for decades. How does it feel? For which his answer was: “When one looks everyday things which give us joy – clouds, animals, trees, music, colors, speech, they make you realize that there can be a different version of them than what you may have perceived. Corbusier had the wonderful ability to identify this quality and had the ability to see things for the first time. The blue of the sky or the music in the wind. This fresh perspective on things and the ability to appreciate it from different perspectives will teach you what design is and as you get older you realise that design is everywhere. ” His answer was something that has resonated with me for a long time, and I guess, it made a huge impact on how I perceive designing.

He is known as an institution builder. Doshi worked with another towering figure of modernism, American architect Louis Kahn on the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Doshi also designed IIM in Bangalore and Lucknow, the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Tagore Memorial Hall, the Institute of Indology in Ahmedabad to name a few.

Doshi was significantly involved in the design of Chandigarh, the new state capital of Punjab (Chandigarh now serves as a joint state capital for Punjab and Haryana). He was tasked with designing the living spaces for the thousands of humble government servants. This gave way to his continued interest in producing the best, basic and low-cost communal spaces.

Architect B V Doshi also made an appearance in the Tamil Film O Kadhal Kanmani. One crucial portion of the film was shot at IIM Ahmedabad campus and CEPT University. Nithya Menen plays an architect in the film and renowned Indian architect Doshi plays her professor.

Come this time of the year, for those who are wondering which time, its grape stomping time in Sula Vineyards near Nasik Mumbai. For those who know their wine and Hollywood movies, I am talking about a scene right out of the Keanu Reeves and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón from the 1995 Hollywood movie “A walk in the Clouds”. Sula for the last 4 years have been organizing a carnivalesque
amidst a picturesque vineyard. This time around it got bigger and better with a Woodstock like ( sorry only tobacco was officially available) ambience and some really good music. The food wasn’t bad either.
Well imagine my surprise seeing a bunch of Harley Davidson riders ( ya you read it right Harley Davidson and no, they were not here to bully the wine drinkers. ) who rode in from Mumbai to flag off a ride. Apparently there is logic behind this, if you think carefully, there are a lot a similarities between wines and Harley Davidsons. ( Once you finish laughing, read on )Both are new and trying to find place in the Indian mindset. Harley Davidson, which aims to pioneer the rise of a strong leisure riding culture in India, was launched at the Auto Expo held in Delhi in January. So there! you know why they were here. The other notable mention would be Nikhil Advani, who directed Kal Ho Na Ho and Chandni Chowk to China, was seen capturing the vibe of the festival with a camera in an attempt to make a Woodstock-esque documentary of the fest.

What is Sula Fest ?

An event organised by Sula Winery in the month of February, 2 days long, in Nasik.
This feb saw the 5th edition. Lot of wine
food music and shopping. A day pass
is 1000/- 2 days pass, 1800,
should be above 18 to take apart.

The Music
Now this is my favorite part ( gasp! I mean other than all the drinking that was done here). Come Sula festival you know there will be some good music to be listened. Played in a Greek-style amphitheatre, the line-up set up by blueFROG, the Mumbai club which features live music performances, included Blackstratblues featuring Nikhil D’souza, Reggae Rajahs and Etienne Mbappe & Su La Take. Papon & the East India Company performed on their interesting rendition of ‘Dumadum Mast Kalandar’ which had the crowd grooving.

More music followed on the second day by Ankur and the Ghalat Family and Soulmate. Taal INC’s Drum Circle worked up the crowds by inviting a select group to jam with them. DJ Sasha performed some upbeat mixes while Dualist Inquiry led by Sahej Bakshi performed the final jig of Sulafest.Apart from music, there was also some B-boying on display for the crowd by Ayush Shrestha, famous as a singer and a songwriter. But then have to admit the best thing to do there is to jump into a grape filled barrel feet first and stomp the pulp ‘out of them’ grapes.
