After her encounter with Hoffman, Malisha began modeling for renowned agencies, including Forest Essentials, a leading luxury Ayurveda brand. Last April, Forest Essentials shared a heartwarming video on Instagram featuring Malisha entering their shop, adorned with an advertisement showcasing her image. Touted India’s Rihanna, Renee Kujur from India’s Chhattisgarh is making headlines as a look-alike of popular music sensation Rihanna. A model now, Renee is already killing it with her Instagram account called ‘badgalrene’ which is also incidentally a near copy of the singer’s account named ‘badgalriri’.

But while Renee is courting fame now, it wasn’t an easy journey for her so far. She has been a constant victim of ridicule owing to her complexion. In a country that is obsessed with fair skin, Renee recounts facing humiliation at a tender age when she appeared for a school performance in the guise of a fairy, and she was laughed at by the audience pointing at her and calling her “kaali pari” (black fairy).
It is only thanks to the changing circumstances in the Indian fashion industry over the past few years, where dark skinned women have been begun to be accepted, that Renee’s got a chance to get into modelling. However, that too was met with skepticism, where she was told that dusky girls couldn’t go as far as their fairer counterparts, and that she would have to compromise her principles and dignity to make it to the top. “They told me all models are into prostitution. I won’t become a model unless I pleased clients. Being dark had already killed my chances,” said Renee to a leading Indian daily. She also related more horrific incidents where photographers would ask makeup artists to make her three-four shades lighter. In one instance, one of the makeup artists is known to state with pride that anyone can do makeup on a pretty girl, but being able to make a dark girl look good was a challenge.
It was a friend of hers who first noticed the similarity between her and the American R&B singer. Soon the likeness was perceived by others. And just so, Renee started earning respect and admiration for her comparison.
But while Renee can be thankful to Rihanna for helping dark skin be accepted and respected, I think Renee should stop cloning herself as the singer. From aping her Instagram account name to even some of her makeup looks and photoshoots, Renee seems to be duplicating her appearance to match the star’s. The question then arises as to is it only when someone walks in the shadow of a bigger star, can one catch the attention and hope to make a name for oneself? I just hope that it is short-lived and for the sake of garnering the deserved attention she requires, and with time she moves on to project her own identity and becomes a successful supermodel in her own right. After all, she is another example of how one can grow big even from a small town.

]]>It’s fun when we get a day off, from all the stress and work load, isn’t it? Ever thought of someone, or something else, enjoying the same? Well, no, right? But hey, here’s a camera talking to us about it’s day out, working for a cover shoot with a ‘lioness’!
I was carried into the hotel by my owner and the first sight I saw was that of a bright yellow arch that had it’s doors open, facing the sea! It definitely did look like my day out was going to be fun!
Moving on, I saw an eagle perched on a ledge. Yes, an eagle. Imagine my excitement upon seeing an eagle up close. My owner’s glee made me capture the best ever shot of the eagle. *I played the Game Of Thrones theme in my head*
The whole place was brightly painted! Look at the yellow walls, man! Best day ever so far.
Had to begin the shoot soon, so my owner was fine-tuning me to make sure the photos were damn good! IOS- adjusted. Exposure-adjusted. Aperture- adjusted. All set for the shoot. I’m seeing the model all ready, posing for a selfie on her phone, to see how she looks. I had to take a picture of that. Funny part, my owner felt the same, too. That’s what they call a connection, I guess.
While the model was getting her touchup done, I had some time to look around, and I saw a vintage scooter there. It added to the charm of the hotel, giving it all a vintage feel.
Chandelier! Let there be light! Oooh, the chandelier set the mood to the entire place, giving it a romantic feel.
Looking around, I saw a small souvenir, and it reminded me of the Egyptian era.
Oh! Anyway, it’s time for me to get to work! The model’s ready and waiting for ME! So, if you guys want to know who I’m shooting and what sort of photos I took, do wait for the June issue to hit the stands.

It wasn’t easy for her to embrace her true identity in a society that was conservative. She came out in 2005 and was cast out from her family, with the exception of her mother, who gave her the strength to stand by her decision. Being rejected as a model messed with her head and she even thought of giving up on modelling completely, but she decided to give it another shot. She did her research, changed her makeup and wardrobe and gave it a shot. Her hard work decided to pay off, and she will be walking for Monisha Jaisingh’s opening show.
