Most fans are receptive to the different looks that are tried on by the Malayalam actors but expect the actress who is more than an age of 40 to look like someone who is of the age 25 and above. The prevalent question here is why is that the actors can be accepted to look the age they are or older if necessary but the actresses ought to adhere to the unrealistic expectations of the fans and look good for the men. The salt n pepper look was popularized by Tamil actor Ajith and still influences majority of the actors. Many times major actors in the Malayalam industry has carried this look and still does. This look not only paved its way into the Malayalam industry but also other industries. Mohall had carried this trend on his movie Grandmaster in which he plays the role of a middle aged officer. The actor received much applause for carrying out this look and which ended up being a much adored by his fans. Later on many actors had flaunted this style in their films such as Mmooty in his film Gangmaster, Prithvi Raj in Seventh Day, Dulquer Salman in Kammatipadam, etc.

These actors have set this trend and this style which has ended up becoming a crowd pleaser. Since then many actors have incorporated this salt N pepper look into most of their movies. Though this style still remains to be of popular choice for many actors, it happens to be a look that no actress would want to go for. In almost all industries, actresses go under the knife to maintain their figure and make sure they look fit and younger than what they really are. Like for instance, in the movie How Old Are You, Manju Warrier plays a 36-year old UD clerk but doesn’t look that fairly old. Even in the case of Shobana, who enacts the role of Dr. Rohini pranab in Thira, looks very appealing and one can never imagine any of these above said actresses with grey hair or carrying the Salt N Pepper style in their respective movies. In the movie Karamyodha where Asha Sarath plays the Mohanlal’s counterpart, the actress seems to have maintained a certain look which would benefit the hero.
Even though a lot has been said in the area of how women should be comfortable in what they wear, not much has been done for their freedom and their desire to act their age, where their male counterparts had a choice and domination over their characters and their looks. The women in the film industry are used as a mere tool of marketing to get better reviews from the audience. So can’t we say that the film industry pressurises them in a certain way took look as they want and mostly wants them to be younger than they actually are. Instead of giving them the due acclaim on their work we judge them on the basis of how well they complement to their male counterpart. This type unequal standards in the film industry needs to change.

]]>The trial in the infamous actress violation case will begin at an Ernakulam district sessions court on 14 March, in which superstar Dileep is one of the 12 accused of the offense. But it took one year for the Judiciary to decide further progressions in the case and finally they have set a date of March 14, 2018, to start with the court proceedings.
Dileep was arrested after two intense rounds of questioning on 10 July 2017, for his alleged role in the conspiracy planned for the abduction of the popular young actress. Dileep’s former wife Manju Warrier is one of the witnesses in the case.
Police sources said the police will soon move a petition for a trial of the case in the court of a woman presiding officer due to the sensitivities involved.
The actress was allegedly abducted on 17 February last year while she was on her way to Kochi from Thrissur.
Pulsar Suni, the prime accused, drove her around for two hours before she was dropped near the home of director-actor Lal.
There have been countless speculations regarding some kind of enmity between the Dileep and the infamous actress. However, no solid evidence till date has surfaced that guarantees Dileep’s involvement in the planning of the abduction.

Kamal’s much-awaited movie Aami, a biopic of Madhavikutty, lacks nothing but Aami in it. The woman who lived and penned for truth is placed in the movie in a sanitized plot. The woman who was not afraid of writing the truth is portrayed in a censored arena. The movie starts with a scene in which a bird gets crushed in between the leaves of the fan, where Madhavikutty is hospitalized. The movie looks spectacular with the Charismatic frames of Madhu Neelakandan.
Kamal’s Aami is lacking the soul. The woman we see on screen is none other than Manju Warrier itself. If Kamal wanted to visualize Madhavikutty on screen but didn’t want to get immersed in controversy he could have used the third-person narrative in the screenplay. Here the story is said in Madhavikutty’s perspective but each and every fact is wrapped inside a controversy-free panorama. Madhavikutty’s pen never feared of controversies. So using the first-person narrative and hiding all the facts is a matter of vain. If Kamal employed the third-person narrative and made this censored version, it could have at least been a good strategy of film-making.
The Neermathalam plays an important role throughout her life in the film. Her POV of the tree is visualized in variant forms based on her age. The use of Mahavikutty’s insane fantasies helped to build some sense as a film. Her secret lover Lord Krishna, is delivered beautifully. The screenplay is poorly constructed. The placement of scenes where the story travels from past to present and intercutting in between was the poor choice of plot. The film could have been much better if the story had a slow progression from Aami’s childhood to old age. The use of some characters like Janu amma, Valli, who were helpers at her ancestral home helped to show the changes in the timeline, even though the placement was tangled.
The dialogue construction was good to an extent, but the similarity of dialogue delivery made them flat. The plasticity of laugh that Kamal portrayed is pathetic to someone who has heard Madhavikutty’s, so is the dialogue modulation. However, the selection of words for Aami needs to be appreciated. The lyrics of Rafeeq Ahamed and scores of Bijibal are far beyond description. The casting was somewhat good, even though the protagonist failed to amuse the audience. Manju Warrier, known as a Female Superstar, fails to bring any facial expressions for her character. Her smile, tears, anger everything has a plastic nature and hence Pattanam Rasheed’s effort went vain. The old and young women who played Nalapat Balamani Amma should be praised. Madhav Das remains a good character throughout the film. Lord Krishna and Akbar Ali are mesmerizing.
The bond between Aami and Das is something hard to crack. Das’s relation with his gay partner neither creates any emotional struggle that Aami had nor generates any sympathy for her. As Kamal tried to drive away from controversies he failed to portray her relationship with some of her lovers. Carlo and Rahul Madhav became some unwanted elements in the storyline. However, Kamal succeeded to depict Kamala’s love for Lord Krishna. Her conversion to Islam is well crafted so that it won’t hurt any religion. Trying to portray Madhavikutty without creating controversy is futile like diving into a river without knowing to swim. Those audiences who would experience Aami without a knowledge of who she is, would definitely ask that why she is so special because you won’t even get a glimpse of the renowned writer Madhavikutty from Aami.

]]>One of first things you would notice about Manju Warrier now is how she seems to turn on and off energy. Mickey Contractor, Bollywood makeup genius and Komal Shahani celebrity costume designer and stylist has created a polished and sophisticated look for Manju. The transformation she undergoes during the shot is astonishing. It reminded me of one of the ‘Manju-Legends’ during the shoot of her last feature film. The late Maestro Thilkan is supposed have commented that she has a habit of upstaging everyone in the scene. The excitement in acting with Amitabh Bachchan was very visible. She confesses that it was a dream come true to act with him and it took some time for realization to sink in after the very first shot together.
She admits that she never thought getting back to dancing will get her back in front of the camera and that not in her wildest dreams that she thought it would lead to her acting with Amitabh Bachchan. Her fear was allayed by the changes in the public area especially in the entertainment industry and the way entertainment is accessed by the spectators. One of the biggest confidence boosters has been the response online on both her personal website and Facebook page. Manju was overwhelmed by the call for comeback on the web. No matter what was tried to coax out an answer out of her, she did not commit to her return to full length feature films in Malayalam. Given the extent of this campaign there would be surely a demand for her in other languages too.
Malayalam industry certainly hasn’t yet filled the void left behind by Manju Warrier, hopeful she would return to fill the same.
The sheer aura and goodwill this legendary actor has, needs to be experienced to believe in. At the entrance of the Goregaon Film City my car was stopped to esquire about my destination. The security guard and the accompanying rifle wielding soldier seems to have gotten off the wrong side of the bed that Monday morning. My press card and mention about the jewellery shoot eased but did not resolve the situation until realization dawned on the soldier’s face. “ Amitabh- Amitabhji ka shoot, Its happening on Floor 1, why didn’t you say that” Then patiently explained the route to me inspire of my less than basic Hindi language skills. The Bachchan card worked remarkably well and eased my passage through rest of the checkpoints until of course at the Floor entrance where Mr. Pattah rescued me.
There is a noticeable spike in energy when Amitabhji walks into the set. Guess nobody wants to make a fool of themselves around him. But then he also makes it a point to make everyone at ease. The roller coaster scene in the ad was shot with a green screen, the ‘ok’ for it was getting delayed because of the expression of a co star in the scene and Bachchan was no right either. Finally the director asked them to scream as if they were in a real roller coaster ride and the loudest scream was who else’s but Bachchan’s!
In a different setting all the actors had to wait a bit for the art department to get things ready and delay was leading to frayed tempers, because the schedule was getting messed up. The scene dynamics was such that Bachchan had to walk out of the restaurant on seeing his daughter (Manju) sitting at a different table with her husband. Finally the props were in place and on the first
take Bachchan walks out in a huff then rushes right back into the frame with a plastic chair and mimics throwing the chair at the couple. Implying jokingly to the Director Sreekumar Menon that throwing the chair would have been more real life like Bachchan laughs out loud. The whole unit which froze for a moment joins the laugh a second later and all the late schedule tensions forgotten.
In the same scene when Bachchan walks out of the camera field he walks straight towards the console where Co-director Jaishankar Pandit and associates sit watching the ‘take’ on the monitors.
So every time he walks out of the camera field he ends up near the monitor and everyone sitting around it jump up to their feet. He took it in his stride and coolly moved out of the field in a different angle.
