The Mammoottys

They are the Malayalam film industry’s fashion royalty. We are unable to determine if Dulquer or Mammootty was the fashionista of the reception. Mammootty accessorized his black kurta outfit with a stylish pair of shoes. Dulqur was rocking a black and white outfit that was really stylish.

The Krishna Sisters

Without the stunning Krishna sisters, there would be no fashion. Ahaana, as always, looked stunning in her white saree with a garden motif. Diya showed off her lavender lehenga. Little Hansika looked like a frozen princess in ice blue, while Ishaani looked lovely in her black saree. With a saree of light grey hue, Sindhu Krishna was matching with her daughters, give like mother like daughters vibe.

Honey Rose

Honey Rose accessorized her orange saree with a basic Jhumka, and it looked lovely. Her saree and hair colour seemed to go together.

The Kunchakos

Kunchako Boban and family flauted in a tint of pale yellow. He was in a floral printed shirt, twinning with his son little Izahak and wife Priya. Little izzu is proving us that he is a fashion star in progress.

Stars from Malayalam movies including Dileep, Jayaram, Mohanlal, and Mammootty, were present at the wedding. A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcoming the people who were standing to welcome him with folded hands went viral on social media. The groom was dressed in a Kerala dhoti and shawl, while the stunning bride wore a crimson Kanchipuram saree. At 8:45 a.m., Bhagya Suresh and Shreyas Mohan tied the knot in a customary Hindu ceremony.

During the ceremony, Bhagya drew attention with her simple yet sophisticated outfit. The designer of her stunning reddish orange saree. With a choker around her neck, some bangles on her hand, jhumkas in her ears, and a Maang Tikka, she finished off her bridal outfit.

The groom sheryas kept it look simple by donning a mundu which was in contrast to the brides look

Bhavni Suresh

Bhavni Suresh had such a stylish yet traditional appearance. The green saree really made her look stunning. She added a couple classic jewellery pieces to finish the overall look.

Narendra Modi 

Adorned in a white Kasavu dhothi, shawl, and shirt in the Kerala style. The Prime Minister appeared to be a true Malayali.

Meenakshi Dileep

Meenakshi wore a red lehenga to maintain her gorgeous appearance. She took care to stand out from the other attendees.

Khusboo Sundar

Khusboo looked stunning in her traditional Marron and White Kanchivaram Sarre. She accessorised her outfit with traditional jewellery.

Mohanlal

Mohanlal wore a kasavu mundu and a pink shirt, maintaining his royal appearance. He added a watch to match his outfit.

Mammootty

Mammootty, who maintained a very casual appearance, wore Kerala Kasavu Mundu with a white shirt.

Richa Chadha has been roped in to play the significant role of Shakeela in the biopic directed by Indrajit Lankesh. The film will delve into the life of superstar Shakeela who ruled the Southern film industry for over 2 decades. Earlier there were speculations taking rounds that Richa was learning Malayalam for the same  but now it is confirmed that the film will be Hindi, though there could  be possibilities for a Malayalam dub. Best known for her adult films, Shakeela became a rage overnight after her first mainstream film Play girls in which she acted alongside Silk Smitha.  One of the most popular names in the south even today, Shakeela has a story that makes for a compelling celluloid tale for the audience to watch. She rose to stardom after Silk Smitha, grabbing every producer and director’s attention in the Southern film industries also becoming the first female actor in Malayalam cinema to gain such popularity back when it was a largely male dominated business, she literally made superstars like Mammootty and Mohanlal run for their money.

Richa Chadha dressed in a traditional Kerala saree called Kasavu Pattu seems to be all set to take on the new journey for Shakeela’s biopic. Standing by a pillar in the front court yard of a old style Kerala type of house. The lush green foliage around adds to the overall ambience of the place and knowing the versatility of Richa chadha’s acting ability, this first look sneak peek surely gives us an expectation of a enormous tornado hitting the cinemas in the near future.

When asked about the first look, the actress said, “The challenge for the look of the film but also a good one is that the story traces the journey of Shakeela’s younger days to her becoming a popular figure. Thus the looks span over years and years and with each passing time her look changed and thus to show that is challenging but also for me as an actor its gratifying that I get to grow with the real character on celluloid. Shakeela is still a legend and we wish to do complete justice to her when the film is ready.” Richa, meanwhile, shared a picture of her look from the film on her Instagram page. Shakeela has done films in all the four south Indian languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Also, her films weren’t only dubbed in Indian languages but also in Chinese, Nepalese and several others, her popularity was spread all across Asia. However, she is most popular in Kerala, with her best known work being Kinnarathumbikal. According to a Times of India report, Malayalam hunk Rajeev Pillai will play her love interest in the film. Confirming the news, the Malayalam actor told TOI, “I will be playing the hero in the film. My character is called Arjun.” The report adds that Richa has met Shakeela to prepare for her role.

Richa, who is known for doing experimental roles and fearless attitude, was the ultimate choice for the filmmakers of the Shakeela Khan biopic to play the role. She recently met Shakeela in Bangalore for the first time for an official meet and greet session. They both spent a great deal of time together and had a quality time bonding with each other. Shakeela shared experiences from her early days and her long career in the industry, giving the Masaan actress all the details she would require to play the part to complete perfection.

Elanthoor, a small village in Pathanamthitta, Kerala is where Mohanlal was born. But he grew up in Thiruvananthapuram and earned a degree in commerce from Mahatma Gandhi University. Keralites saw Mohanlal for the first time on the screen through the directorial debut of Fazil in Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980). Even though he was cast in the lead antagonist role, the young boy succeeded in obtaining a place in audience’s heart. It has been a legendary run for this veteran actor since then.

It’s going to be a festive season soon at Mollywood as Malayalam cinema’s superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty get ready to unveil their latest films. It’s been a while since Malayalis have been waiting to see Mohanlal on screen. After Mathew Manjooran in Villain, we are now about to see Mohanlal as Sunny George in Neerali. Close on his heels, Mammootty’s Abrahaminte Santhathikal is getting ready to hit the screens soon.

Neerali, which is a drama thriller, is the first release of Mohanlal in 2018. Apart from the distinguished actor, Neerali has a couple of other reasons to grab much attention among movie enthusiasts. It will be filmmaker Ajoy Varma’s first movie in Malayalam. But above all, Malayalis are waiting to see the magical combo of Nadiya Moidu and Mohanlal on screen again. The official teaser of the movie went viral with over 3.2 million views within hours after being released by Mohanlal through his Facebook page. A motion poster and a couple of other posters also went out which show Mohanlal in a completely different look and attire in the movie. The film is set to release on June 14.

Mammootty is back again in the role of a police officer through the movie Abrahaminte Santhathikal, directed by debutant Shaji Padoor.  Derick Abraham IPS is the character Mammootty will be playing in this action thriller and the expectations are already high. Few official posters of the movie were shared by Mammootty himself, that were widely popular across social media. Three days ago, a video song was also released by the officials and the song is already on the hit chart. Even though the release is expected in June itself, no official confirmation has been made yet.

But if rumours are to believed, Mollywood will be witnessing another epic battle in box office between the undisputed kings of Malayalam film industry.

This look not only paved its way into the Malayalam industry but also other industries. Mohall had carried this trend on his movie Grandmaster in which he plays the role of a middle aged officer. The actor received much applause for carrying out this look and which ended up being a much adored by his fans. Later on many actors had flaunted this style in their films such as Mmooty in his film Gangmaster, Prithvi Raj in Seventh Day, Dulquer Salman in Kammatipadam, etc.

These actors have set this trend and this style which has ended up becoming a crowd pleaser. Since then many actors have incorporated this salt N pepper look into most of their movies. Though this style still remains to be of popular choice for many actors, it happens to be a look that no actress would want to go for. In almost all industries, actresses go under the knife to maintain their figure and make sure they look fit and younger than what they really are. Like for instance, in the movie How Old Are You, Manju Warrier plays a 36-year old UD clerk but doesn’t look that fairly old. Even in the case of Shobana, who enacts the role of Dr. Rohini pranab in Thira, looks very appealing and one can never imagine any of these above said actresses with grey hair or carrying the Salt N Pepper style in their respective movies. In the movie Karamyodha where Asha Sarath plays the Mohanlal’s counterpart, the actress seems to have maintained a certain look which would benefit the hero.

Even though a lot has been said in the area of how women should be comfortable in what they wear, not  much has been done for their freedom and their desire to act their age, where their male counterparts had a choice and domination over their characters and their looks. The women in the film industry are used as a mere tool of marketing to get better reviews from the audience. So can’t we say that the film industry pressurises them in a certain way took look as they want and mostly wants them to be younger than they actually are. Instead of giving them the due acclaim on their work we judge them on the basis of how well they complement to their male counterpart. This type unequal standards in the film industry needs to change.

Naalu Pennungal (2007)

A movie from the legend and individualist himself, Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The movie has four distinct parts which are adapted from Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s short stories. All stories develop through the lives of four different women from various layers of society. The films have been screened at more than twenty festivals and Adoor won the National Award for Best Director in the same year.

Kerala cafe ( 2009)

10 prominent directors in Malayalam with 10 different short stories and the big man Ranjith as the producer, Kerala Cafe was the first anthology movie widely accepted by Mollywood audiences. The entire film had many leading artists from the industry, including  Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Fahadh Faasil, Navya Nair, Nithya Menon, and each one had an entirely different crew which made the film unique. The intersection of the ten stories happens in a railway cafeteria called “Kerala Café” and thereby creating a joint mosaic of issues and impressions.

D Company ( 2013)

It was a much-awaited film of that period just because D Company is touted as Indian cinema’s first action anthology. The three stories were directed by Diphan, M Padmakumar, Vinod Vijayan and cast included Jayasurya, Anoop Menon, Unni Mukundan, Fahad Fazil and Asif Ali. Before the production, big names such as Mohanlal, Shaji Kailas, Joshy, Trisha were heard around the film. Even though there was much anticipation reagrding the movie, it couldn’t fetch much success at the box office.

5 Sundarikal (2013)

Five women and the exhibition of five beautiful stories, each having approximately 30 minutes duration. It is what Amal Neerad produced 5 Sundarikal is. The short films directed by Shyju Khalid, Anwar Rasheed, Amal Neerad, Aashiq Abu, Sameer Thahir were tied all together and the attempt struck the right chord when it came to the performances of actors, cinematography and freshness in the scripts. Without a doubt, this movie stands on the top position of the anthology genre in Malayalam cinema.

Kadhaveedu (2013)

Kadhaveedu directed by Sohanlal is a film which portrayed three stories, penned by legends Vaikkom Muhammad Basheer, Madhavikutty, and M. T. Vasudevan Nair. Kadhaveedu had a star cast of  Kunchacko Boban in the lead role, with Biju Menon, Rituparna Sengupta, Bhama, Manoj K Jayan, Lal, Mallika, and Kalabhavan Shajon but failed to garner much attention in the theatres.

Aana Mayil Ottakam (2015)

Aana Mayil Ottakam narrates three short, unconnected stories written and directed by Jayakrishnan, Anil Sign and Balu Varghese, Mithun Murali and Sharran are seen in prominent roles. The first one among the series, Aa Aaa E Ee, portrayed the journey of a man from a schoolboy. 12 out of 15, the second one is about life in a multi-national company. The third one, Fill In The Blanks, is directed by both Anil Sign and Jayakrishnan jointly.

Cross Roads (2017)

A bilingual anthology experiment by Bejoy Nambiar, starring Dulquer Salmaan. Solo present the viewers, the life of four different people, each one played by Dulquer himself. Earth, Fire, Wind and Water, four elements of nature which every story revolves around and each with the different facets of Lord Shiva. While some elements of the movie were brilliantly depicted, some went drastic and resulted in a mixed response from theatres.

From Vigathakumaran to Uncle, Mollywood has always stood on top of the mostly acclaimed and distinguished film industries ever. But it’s outrageous that some exceptional Malayalam movies in the last three decades went unnoticed even when they got critically acclaimed and it’s fascinating that some of these had the presence of luminary personalities and were starred by big names.

Guru (1997)

Guru is a fantasy movie directed by Rajiv Anchal, starred by Mohanlal and had a big supporting star cast including Nedumudi Venu, Srinivasan, Suresh Gopi, Sithara, Kaveri Muralidharan, and Sreelakshmi. The movie is said to be a metaphorical attempt which delivered multiple layers of meanings. Topics like divisions in society resulting in violence and conflicts and humanity’s ignorance of the truth were discussed in the movie and the thematic resemblance of the story with Plato’s Allegory of The Cave were noticed. Guru was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category in the same year.

Nirnayakam (2015)

It is a movie which handled a very intense theme. Director V K Prakash beautifully portrayed weighty issues like injustice, lone man’s fight, vested interests and so on. The story begins with Ajay, played by Asif Ali, a National Defense Academy cadet who thinks it’s never his cup of tea. Later, the audience gets introduced to Venukuttan depicted brilliantly by Nedumudi Venu, who fights for social justice. The story develops through Ajay’s relationship with his father, Venukuttan’s fight for justice. Even though it had a relevant theme executed nicely, the movie went unnoticed by the audience at the box office.

Devadoothan (1999)

A Sibi Malayil-Mohanlal duo movie, Devadoothan released as one of the best mystery horror films ever in Malayalam. The story revolves around Vishal Krishnamurthy, a music teacher expelled from college. Years later, he gets an invitation back to his college for a musical play and he reveals a hidden mystery behind a protected music instrument in the college. Even though the movie was packed with a thrilling script and brilliant performances, the movie didn’t receive the acclaim that it deserved.

Theevram (2012)

Theevram is an action crime thriller made by Roopesh Peethambaran and starred by Dulquer Salmaan. The dark mood of the film had two plots – present and past – which made the story narration interesting. The movie is about the anger and outburst of a young man towards the person who killed his wife and against the legal system which denied him justice. Theevram was considered as a perfect dark emotional thriller, but that didn’t reflect on the box-office.

A man who won every election he ever contested, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, more popularly known as YSR, must have been a charismatic force to reckon with. And who better to play his character than Malayalam’s own captivatingly attractive Mammootty?

It has been confirmed that Mammootty shall essay the role of YSR in the Telugu biopic, Yatra, to be directed by Mahi V Raghav.  As the title suggests, the movie shall focus on the 1475km long paadayatra that YSR undertook in 2003, much like how famous rulers in the past took to walking their kingdoms in order to understand the lives of their subjects. YSR went on to win elections in 2004 and 2009, and the paadayatra is largely considered to be a pivotal episode in his life that turned the tide of his political career.

Mahi has stated that Mammootty was chosen for his larger-than-life onscreen presence which would be an important part of how he wants to portray YSR, a man whose shocking death reportedly spurred many grief-stricken to suicide. The director, however, is yet to zero in on the other actors portraying characters from YSR’s life, but the rumour mills have churned out the possibility that Yatra might also see Nayantara joining the cast.

It has also been stated that the movie shall be made in Tamil too, as Mahi feels that YSR’s appeal is universal. Moreover, he has stated that the biopic is not for those who already love and respect YSR, but will rather be an introduction to those who do not know of the towering personality.
