]]>This high profile leisure and entertainment destination boasts of world· class shopping and top-notch leisure facilities across the globe. Macau is not just a mere haven of slot machines and gambling tables but there’s lot to explore in this erstwhile Portuguese settlement. At the Michael Jackson Gallery in the Sofitel Hotel I saw more than 40 memorabilia of MJ. I gaped in wonder at MJ’s glittering white rhinestone glove, and a pair of socks covered with hand-sewn Swarovski loch rosen and square crystals.
From there, I headed to the trendy Hard Rock Hotel, complete with an eclectic collection of Hard Rock Memorabilia of idols like
Michael Jackson, Jacky Cheung, Madonna, Elton John, etc. When we had our fill of roulette and razzmatazz, we indulged in Museum
hopping. Macau’s museums range from the Maritime Museum to Vintage Sound Machines Museum. The prominent Macau Museum which has been built into the excavations of a fortress yielded a substantial number of the artifacts of the museum. But what caught my fancy was the Wine Museum devoted to wine, providing all the dope on wine making, from the growing of the grapes to bottling. I marveled at the 1,143 different wine brands on display. The Grand Prix Museum is just a hop, skip and jump from the Wine Museum. It houses a collection of magnificent machines that raced and won the Guia circuit. I tried the large Grand Prix simulator and felt the adrenaline rush.
The Historic Centre has a series of interconnected squares and streets crowded with beautiful specimens of European and Chinese architecture. Surrounded by pastel-colored buildings, the Senado Square with wave-pattern stone mosaic is the focal point. One end of the square is the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau and Holy House of Mercy. At the far end is the 1f’1:h century St. Dominic’s Church. Also have a look at the proud facade of St. Paul’s which is one of the most enduring symbols of Macau.
Don’t miss world’s highest commercial bungy jump at Macau Tower, sky jumping or sky walk along the tower’s outer rim. Equally spectacular is The House of Dancing Water, a breathtaking water based extravaganza in the City of Dreams.
Being a food ie, I explored the street food scene for dim sums, Macau’s famed egg tarts and coconut cakes. I headed to the eponymous eatery of Antonio Coelho in Taipa village where a delightful Portuguese experience awaited us_ Chef Antonio rustled up his signature dishes like spicy sausages, goat’s cheese gratin with acacia honey and olive oil. For the main course, we had charcoal grilled Bacalhau (codfish) with potatoes. I relished the African chicken with garlic, onions, chilly, ginger and coconut sauce. To round off, Antonio served us crepe suzette-lovely pancakes with a hot sauce of caramelized sugar, orange juice and Grand Mamier, which he flambeed at the table. It was a treat watching him knock the cork out of the wine bottle with a sword in front of the guests.
