We have been through the path of discovering the logic behind the mathematical constant π (pi). Originally defined as the circumference of the circle, it was much known to us by its numerical representation – 3.14 or 22/7 and on the other hand, Larry Shaw, a physicist, curator, and artist by profession, organised, observed and celebrated Pi Day on the very same day, 30 years ago at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where the staff and public marched around its circular spaces and the consumed fruit pies. Larry Shaw is often referred as the “Prince of Pi” as he invented the holiday ‘Pi Day’ in 1988.
Today, Google celebrates Pi Day’s 30th anniversary with a beautiful doodle that consists of the pie itself and the ingredients used to bake a pie.
Giving a little insight to its occurrence, Pi Day is the celebration of mathematics and is observed annually on March 14 (3/14), as 3.14 is the numerical representation of Pi and it is related to Pi Approximation day which is observed on July 22 every year as 22/7 is the fraction approximation of Pi. In 2009, the US House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution recognizing March 14 as National Pi Day. In 2010, to celebrate Pi Day, Google presented a Google Doodle celebrating the holiday. Pi Day has been observed in many ways including eating pie, throwing the pie and discussing the significance of the number π (pi) due to the pun based on the word “pi” and “pie” being homophones.
As a day to celebrate Pi by eating the Pie, let’s appreciate the genius behind π (pi) and Larry Shaw for introducing another occasion to eat pie.
