Cannes is known to be one of the most glamorous and prestigious international film festivals around the world. India’s Cannes journey began with Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar which won the Grand Prix award in 1946. The 1950s is considered a glorious period in India’s Cannes history. But, it was mostly short films and regional cinema that made the noise in the international circuits as the Bollywood took it’s own sweet time to make its grand debut. It was only in 2002, when for the first time a mainstream commercial Hindi film made it to the fest. It was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, that broke Bollywood’s dry spell at cannes.
From Satyajit Ray in the 70s to Aishwarya Rai to Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in more recent years, the Croisette’s fine sands, glitzy hotels and gourmet restaurants have also hosted Indian cinema’s biggest and most respected actors and filmmakers during the world’s most glamorous film festival. This year’s edition will find many Indian celebrities and talented filmmakers showcasing their work.
Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Mallika Sherawat and Huma Qureshi wowed the it-crowd at Cannes film festival.
Deepika Padukone showed her first red carpet look from Cannes this year as a L’Oreal Paris brand ambassador and she looked no less than an angel, and an epitome of elegance, in a sheer white caped gown.
Kangana Ranaut lived up to her ‘bold and beautiful’ image as she made her Cannes Film Festival red carpet debut in a sheer, embellished and backless gown. Her hair was done in a messy bun, with minimalistic but dramatic eye make-up.
Huma Qureshi attended the inaugural discussion at the Indian Pavillion anchored by CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi. She was dressed in an ivory Varun Bahl Couture gown with sparkling embellishment around its plunging neckline.
Mallika Sherawat also made a stunning appearance at the Cannes red carpet on Thursday. Styled by Wil Ariyamethe, Mallika looked ravishing and gorgeous in a gown by couturier designer Tony Ward.
Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachan, who will be completing 17 years at the red carpet, will be attending the festival on 12 and 13 May. Even the just married Sonam Kapoor will be completing eight years at Cannes and will attend the festival on 14 and 15 May.

The glitz and glam of Bollywood has often come under scrutiny for the objectification of women through its recent addition of ‘item numbers’. What perhaps started as a integral component that was relevant in the story of the films, gradually evolved to a show of skin and sleaze, with the seedy songs involving the actress to be scantily clad and perform dances that are sexually provocative, including seductive gyrations and gestures, with the lyrics of the song being equally suggestive more often than not.

Item songs have always existed in Bollywood, since the 1960s, with the singular figure of Helen being the most famous face of it. Today, it has come to become a mainstay in the films, often serving the purpose of adding the tantalizing factor to lure viewers and boost the marketing of the film. In the modern era, faces have kept changing in item numbers, often losing importance to their bodies. From the main heroines, the mantle went on to be assumed by ‘item number specialists’ such as Malaika, Isha Koppikar, Mallika Sherawat, etc. However, the pressure of not attempting it got to several mainstream lead actresses, who also couldn’t resist from shouldering the role in order to remain relevant and prove their all-round sass, the names including Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and Katrina Kaif.

These explicit song sequences have come in for a lot of criticism from all sides, including viewers and from within film circles as well. Women and men have equally opposed the objectification of women. The very name ‘item number’ is derived from the word ‘item’ which is a blatant degradation of women to mere sex objects, commonly used in the Mumbai parlance.
However, despite the expectations, some of the current prevailing actresses have indeed resisted the meaningless ritual. Leading the pack is the ever bold Kangana Ranaut, who trashed down the concept entirely. Never hesitant to speak her mind, the Queen actress made it clear in a recent interview as to why she will never take up an item song. “I don’t do item numbers because there is nothing to be done in them. They are… they are obscene, they are at times unfair, most of them are sexist. What is there to be done in them? I personally feel they should be banned. I can’t be a part of something which is so toxic for us, our society, our children. If tomorrow, you have a daughter, I have a daughter, would I want her to be called those names, objectified like that? I mean, there are children out there, we need to take responsibility for them,” said the actress who has been known to take a stand unlike most of her contemporaries. Other contemporary leading actresses who have never been seen in item numbers are Aliaa Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Ileana D’Cruz, and Kalki Koechlin.

She created a stir in Bollywood when she burst upon the scene with her debut film Gangster in 2006. Kangana Ranaut spawned a buzz among film circles and fans through not just her noteworthy performance, but her striking appearance, which was a refreshing change from the prevailing looks of contemporary Bollywood actresses.
As we wish her a joyful year ahead and continued success, we look at what struck cinema goers the most about her looks – her varied hairdos that complement her dynamic personality and onscreen characters.
Kangana made everyone sit up and notice her through her impactful performance and fascinating presentation through her very first onscreen arrival in the 2006 film Gangster. Sporting her natural hair with long curls, she was a welcome change for viewers who had grown weary of the assembly line looks of straight-haired actresses.
After her initial few films where she maintained her natural look, Kangana was seen in a dated look in the film Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai (2010). With her character set in the 1970s, Kangana’s role demanded a yesteryear image and she was seen wearing long, black, sleek hair that was often adorned with flowers and hairband.
Tanu from Tanu Weds Manu (2011) is a character who is eccentric. And to match her lightning personality was the mop of zany hair on her head. However, in the sequel to the film, Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), Kangana played a double roll, in which the new character sported a typical boy-cut hair, characteristic of athletic girls from Haryana.
Playing the role of a British NRI in Tezz (2012), Kangana emerged in stylish fawn coloured tresses. Grazing her should were locks curled at the bottom, which lent a charming touch to her urban character.
Striking a chord with Indian girls across the country, Kangana won hearts with her simple, sweet, and realistic look by wearing her hair in the ubiquitous plain braid. Her heartwarming character was so true to her self that she maintained her look even after going to the fashion capital of the world – Paris, until the fag end of the film.
Continuing her streak of an ever-changing mane, Kangana was seen with a short bob of curls in Rangoon (2017), set during World War II. The ear-length chunks of locks exuded a quaint charm upon her fierce whip- lashing character, which was based upon Fearless Nadia.
