A rubber plantation worker from Kerala whose singing video has taken the internet by storm since last week has some new turn of events. Rakesh Unni received viral fame after the video of his melodious rendition of a hit Tamil song, Unai Kaanadhu Naan, from the movie Vishwaroopam, went viral on Friday. Rakesh belongs to Kerala’s Alappuzha district and got to know his video was going viral after his sister’s husband in Kuwait called up to inform him.

After listening to his voice a few days ago, singer and music composer Shankar Mahadevan sent out an appeal to his Twitter followers to help him trace a man whose voice had taken him by a surprise and also wished to collaborate with him in future.

In the video Rakesh Unni, was seen sitting on a field and singing the Tamil hit “Unnai Kaanadhu Naan” from Kamal Haasan’s movie Vishwaroopam.  “This is called fruit of labour! When we hear this, it just makes me feel so so proud of our country that produces so much talent and is so rich in culture. Who is this guy??? How can I trace him? Need help & would like to work with him,” Mahadevan wrote on his Twitter page.

Speaking to Indian Express Malayalam, the singer said he had no clue that his video would go viral. Rakesh had no idea that the song he sang, sitting among rubber trees, would fetch him so much attention. It was just another work day when he and his friend had sat down during break time and Rakesh had sung the song. The friend recorded him singing and the video was put online. Someone took notice and calls started coming from singers and musicians. Rakesh was happiest when the man he adored – Shankar Mahadevan – called and told him he has a good future and that they would meet and sing together. Looks like the dream is already coming true for Rakesh. The list of people who called Rakesh includes singer Pandalam Balan, violinist musician Balabhaskar and music composer Gopi Sunder. But, that’s not all. Famous Tamil composer Ghibran has also been in search of Rakesh

Recently, Rakesh had a golden opportunity to perform live in front of Kamal Haasan, He absolutely adores the Tamil star and was delighted to perform in front of him. Kamal put an arm around his shoulder and pat him on his back, for the melody that Rakesh creates through his music.

The trailer of Kamal Hassan’s much awaited sequel Viswaroopam 2 has been released in three different languages today. While Aamir Khan launched the Hindi version of the trailer, Kamal’s daughter Shruti Hassan launched the Tamil version and Jr. NTR  launched the trailer in Telugu. The film is scheduled to hit the silver screen on August 10.

The director cum producer of the film, Kamal Hassan himself plays the lead role in the film. Viswaroopam 2 is the first film to release after Kamal’s entry into politics. The film has been shot in Tamil and Hindi. The Telugu version is a dubbed one.

The first part Vishwaroopam had encountered several controversies and was initially banned by the then Jayalalithaa government in 2013. The film however was a blockbuster at the box office after Madras High Court ordered for its release. The success of the previous film has thus created the hype for the release of its sequel.

Viswaroopam 2 is also a political thriller film where Kamal comes back in the role of Indian spy Wisam Ahmad Kashmiri  The trailer intrigues the audience with the well crafted visuals and the acting brilliance of Kamal Hassan. And M Ghibran’s music enhances the impact of the trailer.

The cast of the film also includes Rahul Bose, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jermiah, Shekhar Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Jaideep Ahlawat, Nasser, Anant Mahadevan, Yusuf Hussain and Rajendra Gupta.

Other endevours of Kamal in the recent times include the upcoming films Indian 2, by director Shankar, which is  the sequel to his film Indian (1996) and another upcoming film Sabash Naidu. He is also up for hosting the Tamil version of popular reality show Big Boss.

Jeethu Joseph, known as one of Mollywood’s favourite thriller filmmakers, is about to leave his signature upon Bollywood too. The shoot of his maiden Hindi movie kicked off last Friday and Jeethu himself shared the news and pictures of the first day at the location through his official Facebook handle. Jeethu thanked everyone, especially the audience who supported him in his journey of becoming a director and he requested for prayers and support for his film. As a result, the audience is filled with much anticipation and chatter about the movie has already begun.

Jeethu has chosen the very talented Emraan Hashmi and the veteran Rishi Kapoor to portray the lead characters in the film. After the period thriller Baadshaho (2017) along with Ajay Devgn, the audience has been expectant about Emraan’s next venture. The actor also used his Facebook handle and posted a video announcement of the movie.

Jeethu has always had a fondness for thrillers. He even started his career with Detective (2007), an investigative thriller movie. His fourth movie Memories (2013) is still considered one of the best thrillers Mollywood has ever seen. It was the family drama-thriller Drishyam (2014) starring Mohanlal which catapulted Jeethu into being one of the prominent directors in the industry. As a filmmaker, Jeethu has utilised stalwarts of South Indian cinema, Mohanlal and Kamal Hassan to their best. His recent release was the action-thriller Aadhi, which saw the debut of Pranav Mohanlal. Jeethu has also announced a project starring the young Kalidas Jayaram, which will be pursued after the completion of the Bollywood film.

Jeethu’s untitled new flick is said to be inspired from the Spanish mystery thriller El Cuerpo/The Body (2012) in which a police inspector tries to unveil the mystery behind the death of a woman and her missing body from the morgue. Rishi will be playing the role of the cop while Emraan will be the husband of the dead woman. The movie will be shot in a single stretch through the months of May and June and the rest of the cast is said to be joining the sets soon. The film will be bankrolled by AZURE Entertainment and will reach the screen in the banner of Viacom18 Motion Pictures. It is not just Bollywood lovers but even the Mollywood audience will be eagerly waiting for more updates about the movie.

Coming from South India to Bollywood and completing half a century in the career is an achievement that perhaps none other can boast. The struggles, hard work, glamour, and fame was carried out throughout the life with the charisma she always possessed. Coming to the silver screen as a child actress and stealing the heart of B-Town is a feat beyond many actors, especially for a woman. But Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, our Sridevi was born for films.

Thunaivan (1969)

Sridevi made her debut role in M.A Thirumugam’s movie as Lord Muruga. She was four at the time. The film was a box office hit and ran for over 100 days. It also won the National Film Award for K B Sundarambal as it was a musical hit. Sridevi’s performance was noticed by many and she was appreciated for that.

Naam Nadu (1969)

She also got an opportunity to star along with Jayalalitha and MGR in a Tamil movie directed by C.P Jambulingam. The movie was a remake of Telugu movie ‘Kathanayakudu‘.

Poombatta (1971)

After her debut, she did a few films in Tamil and Telugu and went on to debut in Malayalam. B. K Pottekkad’s film starring Sankaradi Prema and the little Sreedevi was a remarkable one in her career. She won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Actress for her role as Sumathy.

Her most notable films during the period were Kandan Karunai (1967), Naam Naadu (1969), Prarthanai (1970), Babu (1971), Vasantha Maaligai (1972) and  Marapurani Manishi (1973) .

Julie (1975)

Sridevi made her debut in Bollywood in K S Sethumadhavan’s movie Julie, in which she played the role of the sister of the lead actress Lakshmi. Julie was a remake of the Malayalam movie Chattakkari by the same director. Sridevi was about 11 years old then. In an interview in 1992, Sridevi said “In the film I was supposed to have a boyfriend and I didn’t even know the meaning of the word. I was so innocent then. I also remember my mother flying into a rage during the making of this film (laughing). You see I was playing an Anglo-Indian girl, and the director insisted that I cut my long hair in a bob only to look more realistic. My mother refused point blank. But one day when she wasn’t around, one of the artistes bullied me into sitting still and she quickly cut off all my tresses. My mother was absolutely livid when she later found out!”.

Moondru Mudichu (1976)

Sridevi’s debut as a heroine was in K. Balachander’s movie Moondru Mudichu. At the age of 13, Sridevi played the lead role opposite Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth in a  much more challenging role. Sridevi played Selvi, a character who is in love with Balaji, a role played by Kamal Hassan. Rajinikanth is the villain, who denies help for his own friend Balaji, in order to get Selvi. Sridevi then becomes the maid of Prasanth (Rajinikanth), and Prasanth proceeds in his interest towards her. Once, during his absence, Selvi marries his father and takes revenge. The character is still praised as it is a memorable one in her filmography.

Sridevi later did movies like  Gayathri (1977), Kavikkuyil (1977), 6 Vayathinile (1977) etc. The later was a landmark in the history of Tamil film industry as it was shot in different locations.

Sadma (1983)

Balu Mahendra’s  Sreedevi-Kamal Hassan starrer was a new approach in the storyline for B-Town. Sridevi’s performance as a victim of amnesia was praised and marked as a milestone in her illustrious career. The film narrates the story of Nehalata (Sridevi), a young girl who regresses to childhood after suffering a head injury in a car crash. Lost, she ends up trapped in a brothel before being rescued by Somu (Kamal Haasan), a lonely school teacher who falls in love with her.

Mr.  India (1987)

The Bollywood sci-fi superhero movie Mr. India was a breakthrough in Sridevi’s career. She acted along with Amrish Puri and Anil Kapoor. It was one of the most iconic films of the time and still remains in the must-watch 100 Indian movies. Shekhar Kapur’s movie was much praised for Sridevi’s iconic imitation of Charlie Chaplin.

Chandni (1989)

Yash Chopra’s National Award winning film ‘Chandni’ is one of the best Yash Chopra films ever made. Rishi Kapoor starred opposite Sridevi. It was one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade.

 ChaalBaaz (1989)

ChaalBaaz directed by Pankaj Parashar was a female-oriented movie in which Sridevi played the lead in a double role. She plays the role of twin sisters who get separated. The film also stars Rajinikanth, Sunny Deol, Anupam Kher and Shakti Kapoor in main roles.

English Vinglish (2012)

After a long period of interval, Sridevi came back to B-Town in English Vinglish, a movie directed by Gauri Shinde. It was a comedy-drama in which she played the lead role. The film was shortlisted as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It was also premiered at Toronto International Film Festival. Sridevi’s character received many praises.

‘Mom‘ was her last movie. She has starred in 300 films in these 50 years. From glamourous guises to character roles, Sridevi has always delighted us. The actor is no more, but she will remain in our hearts through her characters.
