Long lost are the days when we used earthen pots to cook and store food which was not only tasty but also healthy. Things have changed and plastic has conquered every aspect of our lives. From stationery, cutlery, to furniture; everything we use in our day to day life is made up of plastic. Isn’t it sad to know that the things we use today remain on the surface of the Earth for the next 400-500 years without degrading? Even after the end of humanity, plastic will be still continuing its existence by marking its steps on every nook and corner of not just surface of Earth but its oceans as well.
Rather than cleaning the premises or planting a tree just on Environment Day like most of us, some people have gone ahead to contribute their bit for conserving the environment. Here is a list of startup organisations in India who are promoting biodegradable and eco-friendly products to bring an end to the plastic menace.

EnviGreen is the first brand in India that creates 100 percent biodegradable products which are alternatives to plastics. The products of EnviGreen is made from natural starch, vegetable oil derivatives, and vegetable waste. Their products include carry bags, laundry bags, aprons, bin liners, and many more. Ashwanth Hegde, the man behind this venture began his attempts in 2012 to make his dream of promoting biodegradable products into a reality with the help of scientists and environmentalists across the world. The products of EnviGreen are non-toxic and don’t cause harm to human beings and animals. Even if left on the streets, the bags will degrade within 180 days. The products of the brand are tested and certified by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and have hit the market this year.

Pure Living is a social enterprise based out of Kerala that ventured Rolapena, a project aimed to reduce the use of plastic ballpoint pens by making pens out of old newspapers collected from the printing presses. These paper pens are not only biodegradable but also contain seeds inside them that grow into trees after disposal. Lakshmi Menon, a fashion designer, began this endeavour to promote the usage of biodegradable products thereby bringing an end to the danger of plastic. Pure Living also provides a source of financial stability for elderly and differently abled women at their old age by employing them in the making of Rolapena pens.

Bakeys manufacture single-use cutlery like spoons, forks, chopsticks by using different types of flours and other natural ingredients. The best part about these cutlery are that they are edible and can be consumed after use.

It’s every bride and bridegroom’s dream to wear his designs on their special day. As one of the leading designers in the country, Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an epitome of bridal wear couture, creating them based on the basic principles of dressmaking. From the initial idea to the final product, the entire process is handmade, fashioning beautiful and intricate patterns on the finest of fabrics.
He recently released his Spring Summer 2018 collection and they are a visual treat to the public.
This collection below was inspired by a 1983 romantic drama film Heat and Dust, screenplay written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala based upon her novel of the same title. While the plot of the movie revolves around India during the British Raj, Sabyasachi claims that his designs are inspired by the way he sees India at most times, in its glory, rich architecture, textile, food, and music.
Sabyasachi, on the other hand, has pioneered in the industry as a jewellery brand by launching his collection of statement jewellery called The Lotus Pond. The collection displays a wide range of statement jewellery in uncut diamond strung together with faceted and cabochon emeralds in different hues and colours. A combination of Zambian, Russian and Colombian emeralds, creating a strange watery hue that is reminiscent of silent lotus ponds in rural Bengal.
As a designer who uses Instagram to portray his design marvels, he said that the statement jewellery pieces were majorly inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Verma and his sensitive use of colours.

Whether your Potterhead friend is a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, when it comes to giving presents, there is nothing they will appreciate more than DIY Harry Potter gifts. It doesn’t matter if it’s for a belated birthday or a graduation gift, nothing says “I love you, and I respect your crazy obsession” better than a handmade Hogwarts-inspired gift.
From wands to artwork, your gift options are unending, and the only thing better than buying one is making it yourself. Here are 7 DIY Harry Potter gifts for the witch or wizard in your life.
Every Harry Potter fan swooned when they saw the Marauder’s Map proposal go viral on the internet, so you know you can’t go wrong by trying to recreate that magic for yourself. Use the original Marauder’s Map from Harry Potter and personalize it with places and things that matter the most to the person you’re giving it to. It will be a gift your special HP fan will cherish. Always.
The best kinds of gifts are edible, so if there’s a bibliophile in your life whose passion for Harry Potter is only rivaled by their love of sweets, then you can’t go wrong with a Harry Potter-themed cake as a gift. opt for the simpler yet meaningful “Happee Birthdae” cake that Hagrid gifted Harry on his special day. It may not look perfect, but as Hagrid taught us, looks can be deceiving.
They can be pretty expensive when bought from stores. I mean, do these wands really do magic or something? Instead of buying your favorite fan’s favorite wand as a gift, make one. It’s a simple and fun projoect (whose instructions can be found on Mugglenet’s Potter DIY page), and it will cost you a fraction of the price of a store bought one.
If you need to make a small yet cute last minute gift for a Harry Potter fan, you can’t go wrong with a homemade Origami Howler in place of a boring old “Happy Birthday” card. Sure, they’re meant to yell at the recipient, but yours will be yelling messages of love.
Since you can’t buy the Potterhead in your life another J. K. Rowling book (Duh! They have them all already, and probably multiple copies of each), you need to think outside of the shelf and go with a totally unique book. That’s where the Monster Book of Monsters comes in. This adorable yet terrifying book has been terrorizing Hogwarts students for centuries, and now, it can haunt the dreams of your dearest HP-obsessed friend when you give them their very own version.
You may not be able to turn back time and make your friend younger, but you can give them the gift of time for their birthday. Or, at least, you can give them the gift of a homemade Time Turner. A cute knick-knack to be displayed or unique piece of jewelry to be worn, the Hermione in your life will surely find a place for your DIY Timeturner.
Christmas may come but once a year, but a Weasley sweater is the perfect gift any season. It’s cure, it’s comfortable, and it will make your witch finally feel like part of the Weasley family (A dream come true!).
So, all you readers out there! Thread your needles and heat up your glue guns, because your gift won’t only be magical because of what it is, but because of who made it.
