A private Facebook group called GNPC (Glassile Nurayum Plateile Curryum) that celebrated winning, dining and lavish alcohol  celebrations has got into trouble with Kerala’s excise department. GNPC, which translates to “foaming glass and curry on the plate”, is the largest closed Facebook group with around 18 lakh members that was formed with the intention of promoting responsible drinking, but in the due process went quite overboard with it.

The group’ s main admins, a Thiruvananthapuram based couple, Ajithkumar and Vineetha have been charged with non-bailable offence for promoting alcohol to masses, hurting the sentiments of a particular community by drinking near burial ground and trumpeting parodies of spiritual leaders who inspired sobriety.  And also booked for Juvenile Justice Act for approving posts that show infants sitting on the lap of adults, while the adults are consuming alcohol.

According to the Circle Inspector, T Anil Kumar, who is also the chief investigator officer in this case has accused the group of promoting various liquor brands through their Facebook posts. The brands that were seen in most posts, the investigation team suspect that they were getting financial assistance by these brands. For the time being their bank accounts have been frozen as part of the investigation.

GNPC group started on May 1, 2017 as a food blog with members listing places to eat in Kerala and write ups on signature dishes served at toddy shops. It also became a platform for members to relate their partying experiences and post photographs and videos. Gradually, alcohol came into picture and promptly became the main vocation of the group. The group became so popular that even celebrities from Malayalam film industry shared their good times in GNPC group, namely Chemban Vinod, Aju Varghese and Shine Tom Chacko.

Ajith, who is one of the main admins told News18, “We are well aware of the need for responsible drinking. We are a secret group, which means that we vet our members. No one is forced to join the group, nor is the group promoted on Facebook. We also ensure that no single brand of alcohol is promoted over the others. All the posts in the group are of members sharing food or drink at home, with friends, or about their travels. How is that promoting drinking?”
