You might have seen many Bollywood celebrities hanging on straps holding funny poses or struggling on what looks like monkey bars. This is not a new form of circus in town, they are all training under an exercise routine called pilates! Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on flexibility and balance along with building core strength. In this exercise regime, the emphasis is given to breathing and controlled body movements that brings your mind and body in perfect tune.

According to Balanced Body, this form of exercise was designed by Joseph Pilate, who helped injured veterans to recover during the World War 1. He also trained the internees under this system. He rigged springs to hospital beds, enabling bedridden patients to exercise against resistance, an innovation that led to his later equipment designs.

An influenza epidemic struck England in 1918, killing thousands of people, but not a single one of Joseph’s trainees died. This, he claimed, testified to the effectiveness of his system.

Pilates started getting media coverage as Hollywood celebrities discovered it and has been trending ever since. Nowadays pilates have become the favorite workout routine amongst Bollywood celebrities. Yasmin Karachiwala is the celebrity trainer in Bollywood, owner of Body Image and who has mastered the art of pilates. She is the power behind the gorgeous body of many Bollywood divas and pilates play a crucial role in this.

Namrata Purohit is another celebrity trainer who herself follows the pilate regime and trains various celebrities. She trained Kareena Kapoor Khan post her pregnancy period to shed all her extra pounds.

A devoted follower of yoga, Kareena also enjoys her pilates. Even though she had bid goodbye to her post-pregnancy extra pounds, she took her fitness a notch up by incorporating high-intensity workout along with pilates routines to sculpt her body for the Veere Di Wedding look. She trains under celebrity trainer Namrata Purohit.

Deepika Paduknoe

Deepika Padukone has always given us major body goals. According to her trainer Yasmin Karachiwala, she even has the perfect pilates body.

Alia Bhatt

We have seen Alia Bhatt grow as an actor and also transform from her chubby cute look to the lean figure. It seems that she doesn’t like repeating her workouts so her trainer Yasmin Karachiwala has her hitting different pilates machines such as the Reformers, Cadillac, Core Align, Wunda Chair, Motor, Step Barrel, Bodhi Suspension System and The Barre in any given week.

Katrina Kaif

The secret behind Katrina Kaif’s fitness is a combination of pilates and functional training. She always works hard to achieve the required look for her upcoming projects and it is again Yasmin Karachiwala who trains her.

Sometimes a short walk down memory lane is what it takes to appreciate where you are today

Known for being the angry young man of the film industry, Unni Mukundan has worked in 24 movies, out of which two are in Tamil and Telugu. Did you know his debut film was a Tamil movie named Seedan, which is a remake of the Malayalam movie Nandanam.

Out of the 24 movies, 4 are yet to hit the theatres. His latest movie Achayans has been creating quite a buzz around since he’s sung a song in the movie and that video has crossed over 6 lakh views on YouTube. Unni’s handwriting was his stroke of fate as he got a reply from the late director Lohithadas claiming Unni had good penmanship. This was during the time he sent out several letters to some of the big names in the industry, expressing his interest to be a part of the film fraternity.

Though he describes the cine world as ‘magical’, he also agrees that the term magical could also mean deceptive. For some reason he’s turned on by a woman’s nose. For him, Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha’s nose is perfect. Unni was not always the man he is today. He has had his fair share of struggles, including a battle with speech disorder, for which he admitted that he had help to rectify.

Unni’s decision to join college back in 2014 was a bold statement, as he added that it was never too late. Currently working on his thesis for BA Journalism and Mass communication, Unni says his topic is about superheroes. Why doesn’t that come as a surprise to us? Well, because the fact that he’s a Superman aficionado is not a secret anymore.

It’s been a great journey with Unni so far. Feel like something’s brewing? Me thinks so too! Wait and watch, people. Wait and watch. Till then, ciao!

Thasveer Muhammed was short of something but realised that only a limitless mind can seize the important moments in life.

Rarely, on an Instagram handle, you’d see a profile that describes oneself as an amputee. But, there is also seldom a good, old-fashioned and resilient story being narrated. Thasveer, a model by profession, was left scarred for life following a tragic accident. Fighting against all odds, mental trauma and physical challenge, he resurfaced to narrate his story in a spirit that has been inspiring thousands across the state, and nation. His Instagram account is evidence of his unfettered impetus. On November 17, 2013, Thasveer, a Bcom student, celebrated his birthday with his friends, well into the night, and decided to go on a bike ride. Tragedy lurked just around the corner, and in the early hours of the following morning, they met with an accident. His main artery in his leg was severed. Without any delay, he was wheeled in for a surgery but after three days the infections persisted, leading to an amputation. Sixty days of gruesome pain and very turbulent sleep, Thasveer could not grasp the line that bordered between a nightmare and reality.

The one year of bed rest incapacitated him. As well as his physical impairment, his modelling career, and his clothing line store had come to a halt. But instead of going through a breakdown he turned things around. His family and friends constantly stood by his side and helped lift his spirits during crestfallen moments. As his name ‘Thasveer’ reflects, he decided to narrate his vindication through photography. He started an Instagram handle @thasvy, which rapidly gained thousands of followers of his inspirational pictures. From the creative compositions to his single –legged stance , he’s inspired many followers with how he’s gained his own stability in life. There’s a nonchalance to his past, as he moves on with his witty hashtags, #oneleg #oyeitsmystory. When in conversation, his steadfast nature just proves how he stays true to his words, “ When every heartbeat is stronger than the storm, who needs legs to perform.”

On Staying Fit

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(1)

“I remember when I was wheeled out of the ICU, the doctor consoled me by saying that I could play football after three months.” Fate had other plans. Three days later, his right leg was amputated as his infections persisted. “The year of bed rest, made me restless and then the physiotherapy was intense. Currently the physiotherapy is done, and the metal rod in my left leg will but taken off but not the one in my right arm. “And there’s stopping this spirited young lad. “I have gotten back into football as a striker and into cricket as a batsman. I will soon be looking into getting a prosthetic leg from Ottobock, a German brand. I am looking forward to training on that and then walking with a new leg!”

On handling Perceptions

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(2)

Thasveer has no interest for sympathy. He shrugs it off with his positive attitude and his pair of power crutches. “One of the toughest challenges is when society eyes you with pity. I decided that my positive attitude and putting a brave face was the way to say I am fine. So I got myself customised Superman and Batman crutches to lighten things up.”

On Accepting Reality

fwd life An Amputee’s View Thasveer Muhammed(3)

“One of the hardest moments in my life was right after the accident. For 60 days I could not sleep and I was recovering from shock. In just a moment you lose your career, dreams, and even the most basic thing as the ability to walk for the rest of your life. Yet, after all, that pain I had to endure, I realised how grateful I was to be alive. Thus, I was inspired to do the best I could. Many people dream with their eyes closed, to me an eye opener was to model and travel against all odds. I wasn’t afraid to see anymore. “Going beyond modelling, Thasveer has signed up his first movie, Nishad Ravuthar’s directorial debut “One and Only”.

Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that will help    you burn calories and fine-tune your cardiovascular system. And what’s more, ‘walking’ is accessible to just about everyone and fits into just about any schedule. You can do it alone or with company – the choice is yours.

Regular brisk walks propel you into a higher level of fitness and health, playing the role of a proverbial life-saver. For such a simple exercise that does not require any practice, the health benefits are numerous! Let’s take a look at how walking can improve your quality of life…

1. Walking increases physical activity and decreases stress, thus reducing the risk of heart or cardiovascular disease.

2. If you suffer from hypertension, then regular walking is the best way to maintain normal blood pressure.

3. As a diabetic, brisk walks can keep your affliction in check as it increases the number of insulin receptors on your cells. It also minimises the chance of developing type-2 diabetes.

4. Walking is the optimum exercise for overweight people as it works wonders on belly fat and progressively reduces overall weight. Obese people are at higher risk of diabetes, and the onset of the disease can be prevented with regular walks.

5. Walking burns excess calories and body fats and helps you maintain a healthy body weight.

6. Walking is known to release mood-boosting hormones that can take your mind off everyday stressors. It encourages good mental health, reduces symptoms of depression and stress, and helps you get a good night’s sleep.

7. Walking enhances blood circulation, which in turn improves the strength and flexibility of muscles and joints.

8. Walking improves your stamina and puts the ‘zing’ back in your stride. It gives you relief from fatigue, arthritis pain and backache.

So, don’t think twice about starting and sustaining a walking regimen. Begin with a 20-minute brisk walk, three times a week. Wear good walking shoes, take long, smooth strides and walk as briskly as you can. Swing your arms back and forth and make sure you breathe deeply, but normally.

After a few weeks, increase your walking time to 30 minutes. The rush of energy you feel will incite you to increase your sessions to five times a week. You can then increase your time to 45 minutes and sustain it the year round. You will notice abdominal fat simply melting away, and along with it all the diseases caused by abdominal fat.

You’ll never know the benefits until you experience them. So, leave your sedentary life behind and become a walker today!
