Cannes is known to be one of the most glamorous and prestigious international film festivals around the world. India’s Cannes journey began with Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar which won the Grand Prix award in 1946. The 1950s is considered a glorious period in India’s Cannes history. But, it was mostly short films and regional cinema that made the noise in the international circuits as the Bollywood took it’s own sweet time to make its grand debut. It was only in 2002, when for the first time a mainstream commercial Hindi film made it to the fest. It was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, that broke Bollywood’s dry spell at cannes.
From Satyajit Ray in the 70s to Aishwarya Rai to Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in more recent years, the Croisette’s fine sands, glitzy hotels and gourmet restaurants have also hosted Indian cinema’s biggest and most respected actors and filmmakers during the world’s most glamorous film festival. This year’s edition will find many Indian celebrities and talented filmmakers showcasing their work.
Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Mallika Sherawat and Huma Qureshi wowed the it-crowd at Cannes film festival.
Deepika Padukone showed her first red carpet look from Cannes this year as a L’Oreal Paris brand ambassador and she looked no less than an angel, and an epitome of elegance, in a sheer white caped gown.
Kangana Ranaut lived up to her ‘bold and beautiful’ image as she made her Cannes Film Festival red carpet debut in a sheer, embellished and backless gown. Her hair was done in a messy bun, with minimalistic but dramatic eye make-up.
Huma Qureshi attended the inaugural discussion at the Indian Pavillion anchored by CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi. She was dressed in an ivory Varun Bahl Couture gown with sparkling embellishment around its plunging neckline.
Mallika Sherawat also made a stunning appearance at the Cannes red carpet on Thursday. Styled by Wil Ariyamethe, Mallika looked ravishing and gorgeous in a gown by couturier designer Tony Ward.
Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachan, who will be completing 17 years at the red carpet, will be attending the festival on 12 and 13 May. Even the just married Sonam Kapoor will be completing eight years at Cannes and will attend the festival on 14 and 15 May.
