Kochi customs department which was always busy seizing goods now seems to be in a little trouble. With seized items list going over the roof, with Luxury cars and bikes among many other valuables the Customs department owned warehouses are facing a space crunch. The Kochi customs plans to sell off the seized luxury cars through an online auction. “We are still sorting out the cases and pending legal issues with regards to these vehicles. Once that is completed, the vehicles will be sold via the Centre’s Metal Scrap Trade Corporation e-auction site,” said the Superintendent of the Auction Cell of Kochi Customs. The various seized goods stored at the warehouses include gold, drugs, cars, bikes, drones, foreign-made liquor, sandalwood and other miscellaneous items including forgotten baggage.  “When the vehicles are sold, their prices will be determined by independent mechanics and the concerned agencies within the Customs Department that deals with pricing,” said the Superintendent of the Auction Cell of Kochi Customs.

All the vehicles seized by Kochi Customs department were either brought in through illegal means or are tied up due to legal technicalities. The seized goods include 14 high-end cars, two-bikes, more than 600 packaged drones among other drugs and imported alcohol. The custom departments strong room is believed to be stocked with narcotics. The detailed information regarding seized drugs is not given out by the customs department citing security reasons.  Apparently, One tonne of hash seized in 1989 is still stored in the warehouse along with other hard drugs like cocaine, heroin, brown sugar, ketamine and ephedrine.

Taking into consideration the need of the hour, officials are planning to construct more storage space by adding annexures to the current warehouses. “We are planning to construct an annexure building at a customs house to store such items. Also, the matter of space constraint is being taken up with the concerned airports”, said an officer of Kochi customs.
