India’s artistic heritage is a vibrant mosaic, reflecting the diverse cultural traditions of its states. Each region has its unique style of painting, with techniques and themes passed down through generations. Let’s delve into some of the most iconic traditional paintings from different states of India.

1. Madhubani Painting (Bihar)

Originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani painting is known for its intricate patterns, bold colors, and themes inspired by nature, mythology, and folk tales. Traditionally, these paintings were done on mud walls, but now they are also created on cloth, handmade paper, and canvas.

Distinctive Features: Use of natural dyes, double outlines, geometrical patterns, and motifs like flowers, animals, and deities.

2. Pattachitra (Odisha and West Bengal)

umaid art

Pattachitra, meaning ‘cloth painting,’ is an ancient art form from Odisha and West Bengal. These paintings depict mythological narratives, especially around Lord Jagannath, and are characterized by their intricate details and mythological themes.

Distinctive Features: Fine detailing, elaborate borders, vibrant use of colors, and the use of natural ingredients for dyes.

3. Warli Art (Maharashtra)

Warli art is a form of tribal painting from Maharashtra, traditionally done by the Warli tribe. It primarily uses white pigment on a mud base to depict daily activities, such as farming, hunting, and dancing, in a minimalistic yet expressive manner.

Distinctive Features: Simple geometric shapes like circles, triangles, and squares, which represent different elements of nature and human life.

4. Tanjore Painting (Tamil Nadu)

Tanjore (or Thanjavur) paintings, originating from Tamil Nadu, are known for their rich colors, surface richness, compact composition, and use of gold foil. They often depict Hindu gods and goddesses, with a focus on Lord Krishna and other deities.

Distinctive Features: Use of vibrant colors, gold leaf, and inlay work with semi-precious stones on wooden boards.

5. Pichwai Painting (Rajasthan)

Pichwai paintings, hailing from Rajasthan, are intricate paintings that portray the life of Lord Krishna, especially in the Nathdwara temple. These paintings are traditionally done on cloth and used as wall hangings behind the deity in temples.

Distinctive Features: Detailed depiction of Lord Krishna’s life, use of bright colors, and the portrayal of various scenes from the Bhagavad Purana.

6. Phad Painting (Rajasthan)

Phad painting is a narrative scroll painting from Rajasthan, where the stories of folk deities like Pabuji and Devnarayan are depicted. The paintings are done on long pieces of cloth and are used in religious storytelling.

Distinctive Features: Bold lines, earthy colors, and the depiction of deities and their exploits.

7. Kalamkari (Andhra Pradesh)

Kalamkari, literally meaning ‘pen work,’ is an art form from Andhra Pradesh that involves hand-painting or block printing on fabric. The themes are largely mythological, with stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata being common subjects.

Distinctive Features: Intricate handwork, natural dyes, and a distinctive color palette dominated by earthy tones.

8. Pithora Painting (Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh)

Pithora paintings, created by the Rathwa and Bhilala tribes of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, are done on the walls of their houses. These paintings are part of a ritual to invite the gods and ensure prosperity and happiness.

Distinctive Features: Vibrant colors, ritualistic significance, and the depiction of gods, animals, and scenes from daily life.

9. Chitrakathi Painting (Maharashtra)

Chitrakathi is a traditional art form from the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, where paintings are used as visual aids in storytelling. These paintings often accompany performances that narrate stories from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Distinctive Features: Simple yet expressive figures, use of natural colors, and the narrative style.

10. Saura Art (Odisha)

Saura art is a form of mural painting by the Saura tribe of Odisha. It is similar to Warli art but has its unique elements, depicting the tribe’s daily activities, rituals, and deities.

Distinctive Features: Monochrome palette, linear style, and the depiction of nature and community life.

The diverse painting styles of India offer a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage. In a world filled with stress, anxiety, and emotional turmoil, finding solace and healing through creative expression has become increasingly recognized and valued. Art therapy harnesses the transformative power of creativity to promote emotional well-being, self-discovery, and healing. Let’s explore the profound impact of art therapy and how it can unlock the healing potential within all of us.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art-making as a therapeutic tool to explore and express emotions, thoughts, and experiences. Through various artistic mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpting, and collage, individuals are encouraged to tap into their inner creativity as a means of self-expression and self-discovery.

In art therapy sessions, trained therapists provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to explore their feelings and experiences through art-making. Participants are guided through various exercises and prompts designed to stimulate creativity, encourage self-reflection, and promote emotional healing.

Art therapy offers a wide range of benefits for mental, emotional, and physical well-being:

  • Emotional Expression: Art provides a non-verbal means of expressing emotions that may be difficult to articulate verbally.
  • Stress Reduction: Engaging in creative activities can reduce stress levels and promote relaxation, helping individuals to cope with life’s challenges more effectively.
  • Self-Exploration: Art-making allows individuals to explore their inner thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, fostering greater self-awareness and insight.
  • Healing Trauma: Art therapy can be particularly effective in processing and healing trauma, providing a safe outlet for releasing pent-up emotions and transforming painful experiences.
  • Enhanced Communication: For individuals who struggle with verbal communication, art therapy offers an alternative mode of expression, facilitating communication and interpersonal connections.

Art therapy is used in a variety of settings and populations, including:

  • Mental Health Treatment: Art therapy is often used as part of treatment for individuals with mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and eating disorders.
  • Hospitals and Healthcare Settings: Art therapy is utilized in hospitals and healthcare settings to promote healing and well-being among patients coping with illness, chronic pain, or medical procedures.
  • Schools and Education: Art therapy programs in schools help children and adolescents explore and process emotions, develop coping skills, and enhance self-esteem.
  • Community and Social Services: Art therapy is used in community settings to support individuals facing life transitions, grief and loss, addiction recovery, and other challenges.

Interested in exploring art therapy? Here are some tips to get started:

  • Find a Qualified Art Therapist: Look for a licensed art therapist who has completed specialised training and certification in art therapy.
  • Experiment with Different Mediums: Don’t be afraid to explore different artistic mediums and techniques to find what resonates with you.
  • Set Aside Time for Creativity: Make time in your schedule for regular art-making sessions, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.
  • Embrace the Process: Remember that art therapy is not about creating a masterpiece; it’s about the process of self-expression and self-discovery.

Art therapy offers a powerful avenue for healing, self-expression, and personal growth. By tapping into our innate creativity, we can unlock the healing potential within ourselves and embark on a journey of self-discovery and emotional well-being. Whether you’re struggling with mental health challenges, navigating life transitions, or simply seeking greater self-awareness, art therapy offers a safe and supportive space to explore, express, and heal.

Food that makes you want more of it, its visual presentation will make you want even more

Food has been an essential part of our lives from the moment we came into existence, well, actually even before that. But have we ever thought about food as form an art? This vital part of our lives is solely a form of an art – the way it is curated, prepared and presented. Sometimes, we love to have a particular food because it taste good, sometimes for its visual appeal and sometimes, the food is garnished and presented so beautiful that eating that would be the next bad thing that you do in this world.

Food as an edible product can be consumed in many ways. As people from different age group, we tend to have different taste and preference, be it Maggi or a Double Cheese Chicken Lasagna, we tend to consume it. But how about your favourite food neatly and elegantly presented to you with the perfect finish and flawlessly sprinkled mint leaves on top? That’s something I’d die for.

Food as a form of an art is being widely discussed on various platform. Be it in curating the items for the food item, the cooking or the presentation, it involves a form of art– something that’s cherished and relished by everyone and their taste buds.

The other day, I went to a coffee shop and ordered a Hazelnut Cappuccino, a few minutes later, the waiter brings me my coffee with a small cubicle tray full of different type of sugars and a spoon neatly wrapped in a tissue paper. But, this doesn’t stop there, what I saw next just boggled my mind. The Hazelnut Cappuccino was brewed and milked in such a way that it formed a beautiful pattern on the top and it was so irresistible that I had to click pictures and make my priorities clear.

As a fan of the Hazelnut Cappuccino, I have always knows how it tastes. But that day, I felt the coffee tasted better than any other day because of the way it was presented. When things are visually appealing, it makes you want to have more, no matter how costly it is.
These days, food is been seen as a form of art and chefs are concentrating in presenting them visually tempting. What’s more appealing than a visually enriching food in front of you. Remembering Julia Morgan’s quote, “Architecture is a visual art, and buildings speak for themselves”, and in our case, garnishing and presentation is a visual art, and food speak for itself.

On art-space relations, performance arts, mixed installations and more, find out what the world renowned Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist has to say about these topics

Words: Rheanna Mathews   Images: Various Sources

Starting with “World Soup” (The Kitchen Show), where he held an exhibition of artworks in his kitchen when he was just 23, the award-winning Hans Ulrich Obrist has curated more than 300 shows, all accounts pointing to how he leads a whirlwind life amidst the art he loves and showcases. FWD Life caught up with Mr. Obrist, and spoke to him regarding art and the spaces that hold it. His enthusiasm for his work seemed to shine through his words, giving them an almost magnetic quality, drawing the reader in, convincing them that the art at the Serpentine and the Sackler, and the temporary Serpentine Pavilion.

When it comes to displaying art, how important is the space?

At the Serpentine we have two great spaces. The Serpentine Gallery is a white cube and former 1930s teahouse in the park, ideal for showing paintings. It has beautiful floor to ceiling windows through which the natural light floods in and visitors can see the trees outside. A day without seeing trees is a wasted day. Then we have the Serpentine Sackler Gallery – a space conceived by Zaha Hadid in 2013, but in a historic gunpowder store that dates back to 1805.

Our current season of John Latham bridges both galleries: a survey of Latham at the Serpentine and a group show at the Sackler, with four contemporary artists using Latham’s art and ideas as an open toolbox for their own practice. What interests me with any exhibition is the invention of new modes of display. Take the Latham exhibition, which includes a contemporaneous display, made for the artist by his friend Richard Hamilton, of Latham’s monumental work of land art, Niddrie Woman.

How does the element of performance in a particular art installation change this art-space relation?

In the age of the internet, there is an ever increased desire for artists to explore the live. We do more than 60 live events a year and it’s important these elements enter the gallery also. In a way, the John Latham exhibition has a lot to do with the performative – with his theory of “flat time”, Latham was proposing a shift from a space-based framework of objects toward a time-based cosmology of events. Picking up on those ideas, Cally Spooner’s installation in the group show includes a single live body in a permanent state of rehearsal in the gallery. It’s an anti-performance: Cally is proposing a warm-up for our position as individuals facing an uncertain political future.

How do you choose the space for an artwork, especially when it is a mixed-media installation?

Very often artists are navigating between different media. And sometimes the space can be a constraint. But a space like the Serpentine Sackler works both for painting and mixed-media presentation, which can transform the gallery completely. And in our recent exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, Lucy Raven transformed the whole space into a cinema.

What do you think of performance art and its temporality, especially considering the general conception of art as something to be preserved? Is this temporality relevant?

At the moment, we are talking to Indo-German artist Tino Sehgal on a new live commission – Tino doesn’t want to use this word performance because for him it’s all about the opening hours. To him, a performance means 6 till 7 or 7 to 8 – a limited lifespan – whereas live art is a better notion. Live art has temporality and opening hours. If you come to the gallery from 10 to 6, you can always see it.

Could you describe the process of curation? Where does it start? What does it involve?

The process of curation doesn’t ever really start. It’s a permanent process. A daily practice, like painting is a daily practice for the painter. But each conversation with an artist is a new starting point in the process. A meeting and a dialogue. That is what it means to work with living artists.
