Shah Rukh Khan gets an invitation from the Oscar authorities after omitting him from the 2017 list. The new list consists of a record of 928 members invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the body behind the Oscars seek to enhance diversity. In the year 2017, the Academy had omitted the big name Shah Rukh from the invitee list. Around 744 members were invited and the list consisted of the names Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan. Many actresses younger than Shah Rukh like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra were included in the list. But this year, artistes from 59 countries have been invited and the Academy, in an announcement said that the new members will increase the diversity as 49 percent of the invitees are females and 38 percent are the people of colours.

India features a wide line of eminent personalities in the list of new invitees that include female actors like Tabu and Madhuri Dixit- Nene to name a few. Anil Kapoor is another important personality to be invited along with Ali Fazal and Naseeruddin Shah. Bengali actors Soumitra Chattergee (Bridge) and Madhabi Mukherjee (Charulata) are also enlisted. Yash Raj Films’s Aditya Chopra and producer Guneet Monga also are a part of the list. Cinematographer Anil Mehta, noted for his work in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, Manish Malhotra and Dolly Ahluwalia from the category of costume designers. Production designers Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Rey who worked in Haider also represent India. Dangal editor Ballu Saluja, Sneha Khanwalkar, and Usha Khana represent the music sector.

The Academy has been working in order to include more diversity in the voting panel so as to avoid a controversy like when the Oscars were dubbed “white” for failing to recognise the talents of colour in 2016. With women coming forward and demanding better representation through #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, the Academy seems to have taken these changes in consideration by diversifying its membership.
